Outdoor recreation drives most trips. The Split Cedar Trail adds 11 miles of woodland routes used by hikers, mountain bikers, ATV riders, and cross-country skiers. Long Lake, on the outskirts of town, offers swimming, fishing, paddling, and boating, with a quieter shoreline on the Van Buren side. Van Buren Cove is reached by dirt roads and works well for kayaking and shore fishing. For a rest day, the Acadian Village preserves 17 Acadian buildings overlooking the St. John River and is open to visitors from mid-June through mid-September. Main Street features French-Acadian architecture, cafes, and small shops. The international bridge to Saint-Léonard lets travelers cross into New Brunswick for a day trip.

The practical RV season in the St. John Valley runs roughly from mid-May through September, with a shoulder into early October for foliage. Most private campgrounds on both sides of the border open once frost risk drops and close before hard freeze returns. July and August bring the region's warmest weather and Van Buren's Summer Fest, held each August with music and fireworks.
