Campgrounds near Oakland, Maryland
Oakland sits in Garrett County in Maryland's far western panhandle, on a high Allegheny Plateau surrounded by state parks, state forests, and Deep Creek Lake. The town works well as a base for RV trips built around waterfalls, lake recreation, trout streams, and off-road riding. Elevation is high for the region, so nights run cool even in summer.
Camping options range from developed state park loops to primitive forest sites. Swallow Falls State Park offers 65 wooded sites, with three full-hookup sites, three water-and-electric sites, and three camper cabins. Deep Creek Lake State Park runs a 112-site campground on Meadow Mountain, with 26 electric sites, two mini cabins, and a yurt. Potomac State Forest - Lostland Run and other Potomac-Garrett State Forest areas offer primitive sites along forest roads.
For motorized recreation, Wolf Den Run State Park has a small primitive campground tied to a roughly 50-mile OHV trail system. Double G RV Park provides a full-service option near Deep Creek Lake for travelers who want serviced sites rather than state land.
Things to do near Oakland
Waterfalls anchor the area. Swallow Falls State Park protects the 53-foot Muddy Creek Falls, the highest free-falling waterfall in Maryland, along with a loop past Upper and Lower Swallow Falls through old-growth hemlocks. Lostland Run Trail in Potomac State Forest follows a mountain stream past cascades and a suspension bridge to the North Branch of the Potomac.
Deep Creek Lake State Park has two guarded swimming beaches, a boat launch, and more than 20 miles of multi-use trails, plus the Discovery Center with hands-on exhibits and an aviary. The lake supports fishing, paddling, and powerboating.
Off-road riders head to Wolf Den Run State Park for ATV, side-by-side, dirt bike, and 4x4 trails across the Huckleberry Rocks, North Hill, and Potomac River areas. Trout fishing is strong on Youghiogheny River sections and on brook trout streams inside Potomac-Garrett State Forest.

The main developed camping window at Deep Creek Lake State Park's Meadow Mountain campground runs April 15 to December 15. Swallow Falls State Park sites in the Garrett Loop are bookable from the first weekend in April to the first weekend in December, while the Tolliver Loop is open only from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, with holiday weekends filling first.
Spring brings cold nights, high stream flows, and wildflowers on the Lostland Run corridor. Summer is warm and humid on the plateau, with afternoon thunderstorms common in the mountains. Fall delivers strong hardwood color across Garrett County ridges, cool nights, and firearms deer season, which closes motorized use at Wolf Den Run for two weeks beginning the first Saturday after Thanksgiving.
Winter is snowy and cold, with Oakland averaging over 100 inches of snow a year. The Deep Creek Lake snowmobile trail runs from December 15 to March 15 when at least four inches of snow cover is present.
How to book
Maryland state park and forest campsites are reserved through parkreservations.maryland.gov or by phone at 1-888-432-2267. Reservations can be made up to 365 days in advance and require at least one day of lead time. Weekend stays typically require a two-night minimum, with three nights over holiday weekends.
Hookup and cabin inventory is limited. Swallow Falls State Park has only three full-hookup sites and three water-and-electric sites, so those should be booked as early as possible, ideally around six months out. Deep Creek Lake State Park's electric sites, mini cabins, and yurt also book quickly for summer weekends.
Potomac State Forest - Lostland Run offers primitive sites that are booked through the same Maryland state parks reservation system. Wolf Den Run requires an advance reservation for both camping and OHV riding. Private parks such as Double G RV Park are booked directly with the operator.
What to expect
Terrain is mountainous and heavily forested, with narrow county roads, steep grades, and limited cell service once off US-219. Drivers of larger rigs should plan routes carefully; roads inside Potomac State Forest are rough and offer limited turnaround room.
Garrett County is black bear country. Deep Creek Lake State Park provides bear-proof containers at sites, and food should be stored securely at every campground and primitive site. Firewood is sold at the parks and should not be moved between them. Quiet hours are enforced from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and generator use is prohibited during those hours.
Amenities scale with the site type. State park loops have heated bathhouses with hot showers. Wolf Den Run camping is primitive with portable toilets, no running water, and no bathhouse.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Oakland, MD
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Oakland, MD?
RV rental in Oakland is affordable compared to nearby Deep Creek Lake vacation homes. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes $150 to $275, and larger Class A motorhomes $200 to $375, with many hosts offering weekly discounts. You will save the most by booking midweek and avoiding peak weekends like the Autumn Glory Festival in October or the Fourth of July at Deep Creek Lake. For a cheap RV rental in Oakland, look at travel trailers delivered to a campsite, which skips fuel costs entirely. Shoulder season in late May or September offers mild weather, lower nightly rates, and easier campground availability than midsummer.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oakland%2C%20MarylandDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Oakland, Maryland?
For nearly every RV listed on RVezy, your standard Class C driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Oakland. Maryland only requires a non-commercial Class B license for motorhomes over 26,000 pounds GVWR, and the vast majority of camper vans, travel trailers, and Class C motorhomes on the platform fall well under that limit. You must be 25 or older and upload your license through RVezy's secure ID verification during booking. Visiting from another country? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you are set for your Deep Creek Lake adventure.

If you get a flat on US-219 heading toward Deep Creek Lake or need a tow on Garrett Highway, one phone call gets help dispatched any time, day or night. That safety net is a big reason first-time renters feel confident booking an RV trip from Oakland, especially in a remote mountain region.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Oakland, MD RV booking?
Plans change, and RVezy has a clear cancellation policy that applies to every booking. Cancellation terms are set by RVezy, not by individual hosts, so you will see the same fair structure whether you book a campervan rental in Oakland or a fifth wheel. The further out from your trip start date you cancel, the more flexible the refund. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds you in full or helps you rebook with travel credit. Book with confidence and review the full cancellation policy before you confirm your dates.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Oakland, MD?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Oakland is easy to find. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see many listings from hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Once you arrive, Deep Creek Lake State Park allows leashed pets in designated loops and on park trails. Swallow Falls State Park and Herrington Manor State Park are also dog friendly, with leashed pups welcome on the trail to Muddy Creek Falls, Maryland's tallest free-falling waterfall. Pack a towel for muddy paws after lakeside romps and bring proof of vaccinations in case a campground asks.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/DeepCreek.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Deep Creek Lake?
Yes, RV delivery in Oakland is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer for first-timers. Many hosts will tow a travel trailer directly to Deep Creek Lake State Park or a nearby private campground, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through everything before they leave. That means no white-knuckle driving on narrow lake roads or backing into a tight site. Filter for Delivery on RVezy, message the host with your campground name and site number, and confirm the delivery fee upfront. You show up with groceries and start your vacation.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/DeepCreek.aspxHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive my Oakland RV rental?
Each host sets their own mileage policy and you will see it clearly on every listing before you book, with some hosts offering RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer road trip. From Oakland, popular drives are easy day trips: Deep Creek Lake is about 10 miles north, Swallow Falls State Park is about 12 miles, Ohiopyle State Park in Pennsylvania is roughly 45 miles, and Blackwater Falls in West Virginia is around 50 miles south. If you are planning a bigger loop, message hosts upfront to find one offering generous daily mileage, and confirm the per-mile overage rate before booking so there are no surprises.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/swallowfalls.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Oakland, MD for an RV trip?
You have great choices for RV camping in Oakland. Deep Creek Lake State Park on State Park Road in Swanton offers more than 100 sites, some with electric hookups, plus a sandy beach and Discovery Center. Double G RV Park is just minutes from the lake with full hookups and Wi-Fi. Bumble Bee Campground has pull-through electric sites that fit larger rigs. New Germany State Park and Herrington Manor State Park add quieter, forested options. Book Deep Creek Lake State Park early through parkreservations.maryland.gov, since summer weekends sell out far in advance.
parkreservations.maryland.gov/When is the best time of year for an Oakland, MD RV trip?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for an Oakland RV trip, with July highs around 80F and cool mountain nights in the upper 50s, perfect sleeping weather. June and September are quieter and campsites are easier to grab. October draws crowds for the Autumn Glory Festival when the Allegheny Highlands turn vivid with fall color. Winter is genuinely cold here. Oakland is one of Maryland's snowiest spots and averages around 100 inches of snow per year, but if you book a four-season RV you can ski Wisp Resort and enjoy a cozy lakeside hideaway. Spring can be muddy, so summer and early fall are the easiest months for first-time renters.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay driving one in Oakland?
You will do great, and you will not be left to figure it out alone. First time renting an RV? Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, hookups, slide-outs, the generator, the water system, and dumping. Oakland's main routes including US-219, MD-39, and MD-135 are well-paved two-lane mountain roads with steady grades rather than dramatic switchbacks, and traffic outside summer weekends is light. Choose a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer for your first trip, since they drive much more like a large van. You can also skip the driving entirely with host delivery to your campsite, and your host's contact info is in your booking if you have any questions.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-usWhat if something breaks down during my trip?
Take a deep breath, you are covered. Every Oakland RV rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, with help for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and fuel delivery, any hour of the day. Your host is also a phone call or message away for questions about the RV's quirks like how the awning retracts or which switch runs the water pump. Cell coverage is generally reliable along US-219 and around Deep Creek Lake, with thinner patches deep in Savage River State Forest. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave and you can head into the mountains feeling relaxed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Oakland RV rental into West Virginia, Pennsylvania, or Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Oakland into West Virginia or Pennsylvania is a favorite, and you are minutes from both state lines. Most hosts allow travel across US state borders, just confirm on the listing or message the host before booking. Popular routes include Blackwater Falls and Canaan Valley in West Virginia (about 50 miles south), Ohiopyle and Fallingwater in Pennsylvania (about 45 miles north), and the New River Gorge (around 3.5 hours southwest). Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance coverage, so message first. Travel into Mexico is not covered by RVezy insurance.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Oakland RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to plan for. Class C motorhomes around Oakland typically average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 MPG, and a campervan rental in Oakland can hit 16 to 20 MPG. With Maryland gas prices generally in the mid $3 per gallon range in Garrett County, a typical 200-mile weekend in a Class C runs roughly $60 to $100 in fuel. If you are towing a travel trailer with your own truck, expect about a 20 to 30 percent MPG hit. Top off in Oakland before heading deep into Savage River State Forest, since stations thin out quickly in the backcountry.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Oakland?
For summer weekends, book as early as possible. Deep Creek Lake State Park opens reservations up to a year ahead through parkreservations.maryland.gov, and holiday weekends like Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day can sell out within hours. For midweek summer stays, 2 to 3 months out is usually enough. Private parks like Double G RV Park and Bumble Bee Campground often have a multi-night minimum on holiday weekends, so plan accordingly. If your dates are sold out, check back often since last-minute cancellations open up regularly. Pair your campground reservation with an RV rental in Oakland and you are set.
parkreservations.maryland.gov/What are driving conditions like around Oakland and Deep Creek Lake?
Oakland sits at about 2,400 feet in the Allegheny Highlands, so expect steady mountain grades rather than cliffside drops. US-219 (Garrett Highway) is the main artery, well-maintained and two lanes through most of Garrett County. Side roads like State Park Road and Glendale Road are narrow but easy to navigate at RV speeds. Things to watch for include winter snow and ice (Oakland averages around 100 inches of snow), summer afternoon thunderstorms, and the occasional black bear or whitetail deer crossing at dawn or dusk. Use lower gears on steep descents toward Deep Creek Lake to save your brakes, and check Maryland's CHART traffic site for road conditions before you leave.
chart.maryland.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Oakland?
Local campgrounds are well set up for RV travelers. Deep Creek Lake State Park has a dump station, freshwater fill-up, heated bathhouses, fire rings, picnic tables, and electric hookups on a portion of its sites. Double G RV Park offers full hookups with water, electric, sewer, cable TV, and Wi-Fi. Bumble Bee Campground provides pull-through electric sites that accommodate larger rigs. Savage River State Forest sites are primitive for a closer-to-nature vibe. Top off your freshwater tank in Oakland before heading to remote forest sites, since full hookups thin out quickly outside the lake area.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/DeepCreek.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Oakland?
Expect a fully equipped home on wheels. Most motorhome rentals in Oakland include a queen or king bed, kitchenette with stove, microwave, fridge and sink, a wet or full bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette, and air conditioning plus furnace. Class C and Class A motorhomes typically sleep 4 to 8 with seatbelts for everyone driving down the road. Many listings also include a TV, generator, outdoor speakers, and cellular Wi-Fi hotspots. Travel trailers and fifth wheels carry similar layouts minus the cab. Hosts often include starter kits with bedding, cookware, and outdoor chairs, so check the listing's amenities section to know exactly what to pack for your Deep Creek family RV trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oakland%2C%20MarylandWhat add-ons can I get, and how does pickup and drop-off work?
Hosts in Oakland commonly offer add-ons like generators, bedding and kitchen kits, bike racks, kayaks (great for Deep Creek Lake), outdoor grills, and propane top-offs. Pricing varies by host and is shown on each listing. Pickup typically happens at the host's location in Oakland, McHenry, or Mountain Lake Park, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough covering driving, hookups, and dumping. Drop-off mirrors pickup: return on time, refueled, and with tanks dumped or pay a small dump fee. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup to local campgrounds for a flat fee, often the smartest choice for a stress-free trip. Mileage policies vary, so check the listing page or message the host directly.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oakland%2C%20MarylandHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Booking is straightforward: you pay through RVezy's secure platform with a credit or debit card, with no cash changing hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, then released after a successful return. The deposit amount is shown on the listing and is held separately from your booking payment. To avoid surprises, do a quick walk-around video with your host at pickup and drop-off, return the RV on time, refuel to the agreed level, and follow the mileage and pet rules in your booking. Keep all messages inside the RVezy app so support has a record if any question comes up later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Oakland for a winter or ski trip to Wisp Resort?
Yes, and a winter RV camping trip in Oakland is genuinely magical with the right rig. Wisp Resort in McHenry, about 10 miles from Oakland, is Maryland's only ski resort, and several local hosts offer four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces, perfect for sub-freezing nights. Look for listings that specifically mention winter use or four-season, and confirm shore power compatibility with your campground. Some private parks like Double G stay open year-round, while most state park loops close for winter. Ask the host about heated water hose insulation and bring extra propane, since Oakland nights regularly dip into the teens in January and February.
