Camping near Hingham, Massachusetts
Hingham sits on the South Shore of Massachusetts, about a 35-minute drive from downtown Boston, and functions as the mainland gateway to the Boston Harbor Islands. RV travellers use it as a base for exploring both a large forested state park and a chain of harbor islands managed jointly by the state and the National Park Service.
The closest developed campground is Wompatuck State Park, a wooded 260-site facility just south of town with roughly half the sites offering 20-amp electric hookups, no water hookups, and a dump station on site. The park is the only nearby option that accepts RVs, since the harbor islands are ferry- or boat-access only.
Camping within Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area is currently allowed only on Peddocks Island, with camping suspended at Bumpkin, Grape, and Lovells islands. Thompson Island is not part of the public overnight camping program, so trip planning should focus on Wompatuck for the RV and Peddocks for a rustic add-on night reached by ferry from the Hingham Shipyard.
Things to do around Hingham
Wompatuck State Park offers 12 miles of paved bicycle trails, many miles of wooded bridle paths and hiking trails, and up to 30 geocaches within park boundaries. Mt. Blue Spring is a popular source of free drinking water that visitors can help themselves to. A car-top boat launch provides access to Aaron River Reservoir for non-motorized boating and fishing.
Off-site, Nantasket Beach in nearby Hull offers ocean swimming, and World's End reservation adds coastal hiking with Boston skyline views. The Hingham ferry terminal connects to the Boston Harbor Islands for day trips to Georges Island's Civil War-era fort and Spectacle Island's beaches.
Campers on Peddocks Island can enjoy wooded campsites, miles of trails, and scenic beaches, along with fort ruins scattered across the island's connected drumlins.

Both major campgrounds run on tight seasonal calendars. Wompatuck State Park's campground is open from early May through mid-October, and the Peddocks Island season runs from mid-June through mid-October, with sites available Wednesday through Saturday nights during summer until Labor Day, then Thursday through Saturday nights through the fall.
July and August bring the warmest, most reliable weather and the heaviest booking pressure, with weekend sites at Wompatuck often filling months ahead. Late spring can be cool and buggy, and blackflies and ticks are active in the woods, so treated clothing is worth packing.
September and early October are a sweet spot for RV travellers, with daytime highs in the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit, cooler nights, thinner crowds, and fall foliage building through the second half of October. Winter camping is not available at either location, since both close for the off-season.

How to book campsites near Hingham
Wompatuck State Park and the Boston Harbor Islands sites are both managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and reserved through ReserveAmerica. Wompatuck accepts reservations up to four months prior to arrival, and same-day advance reservations can be made until 2 pm on the date of arrival. Stays are capped at 14 cumulative days of occupancy.
Peddocks Island reservations also open on a four-month rolling window before check-in and sell out quickly for summer weekends. Ferry tickets from Hingham to Peddocks Island can be booked with the camping reservation to secure transportation.
Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of any DCR campground, so firewood must be purchased at the campground.
What to expect on the ground
Wompatuck is a forested drive-in campground with 20-amp electric hookups available at about half the sites, no water hookups, water spigots throughout the loops, centrally located bathrooms, and a dump station. Larger rigs should confirm loop dimensions and bring an adapter for the lower-amp service.
Peddocks Island is rustic and RV-inaccessible, with composting toilets, no supplies, and fresh water available only on Peddocks; campers must bring one gallon of water per person per day and plan to carry it all in and out. Tent sites and newly installed yurts featuring bunk beds and electricity are both available.
Dogs are permitted at Wompatuck on leash with proof of rabies vaccination. Cell service is patchy in both parks, so download maps and ferry tickets before arrival.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hingham%2C%20MassachusettsWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Hingham?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hingham. Massachusetts does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement for the motorhomes available on RVezy. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and you will verify your ID through the platform when you book. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association along with your home license. The host walks you through every system at pickup before you head toward Cape Cod or the White Mountains.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental in Hingham covered by protection if something happens?
Yes. Every RV rental in Hingham booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Route 3 or the Cape with peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip, and at checkout you choose your coverage tier based on how much extra security you want. Coverage is built into the booking, far more reassuring than renting from a stranger. Snap a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off; it takes two minutes and removes any guesswork later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Hingham RV trip?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and refund amounts depend on how far out you cancel relative to your trip start date. The policy is the same across listings, so you can lock in your Hingham RV trip with confidence. If anything changes with your plans, reach out to RVezy support and they will walk you through your options. If a host needs to cancel, RVezy issues a refund or credit to the guest. Most renters find the policy more forgiving than a typical peak-summer Cape Cod hotel cancellation.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Hingham RV rental?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental Hingham options are plentiful on RVezy. Just turn on the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Many South Shore hosts even leave bowls, blankets, or a tie-out for your pup. Once you are rolling, your dog will love Wompatuck State Park, which allows leashed pets at campsites with proof of current rabies vaccination at check-in. World's End in Hingham, managed by The Trustees, is another beautiful leashed-dog spot with rolling coastal trails and Boston skyline views. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees so check-out goes smoothly.
mass.gov/locations/wompatuck-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or home in Hingham?
Yes, RV delivery Hingham is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a 30-foot motorhome through South Shore traffic. Many hosts will deliver directly to Wompatuck State Park on Union Street, your driveway, or campgrounds on Cape Cod and the South Shore. They will level the RV, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before leaving. Use the Delivery filter when searching, and check each listing for delivery radius and per-mile fees. A delivered, fully set-up RV at Wompatuck is the easiest possible introduction to RV camping near Hingham.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hingham%2C%20MassachusettsHow far can I travel from Hingham on an RV trip?
You can reach incredible destinations on an RV road trip from Hingham. Cape Cod's Sandwich and Bourne are roughly 35 to 45 miles south (under an hour without traffic); Provincetown sits about 115 miles down the Cape; Plymouth and the Mayflower II are about 25 miles south on Route 3; the Berkshires are about 145 miles west via the Mass Pike; and Acadia National Park in Maine is around 290 miles north. Many hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, while others include 100 to 150 free miles per night plus a per-mile rate after that. Filter by mileage policy on RVezy and message the host before booking if your route is long.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hingham%2C%20MassachusettsWhere are the best campgrounds near Hingham for an RV trip?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Hingham include Wompatuck State Park on Union Street in Hingham, with about 260 sites, electric loops, a dump station, and water spigots throughout. Just south, Myles Standish State Forest in Plymouth offers hundreds of sites in pine barrens. Boston/Cape Cod KOA Holiday in Middleboro adds full hookups and family amenities about 40 minutes away. Sandy Pond Campground in Plymouth is popular with beach lovers, and Normandy Farms in Foxborough is a top-rated private resort about 45 minutes west. Wompatuck offers a meaningful discount for Massachusetts residents compared to the non-resident rate, making it a great value so close to Boston.
mass.gov/locations/wompatuck-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Hingham?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping Hingham, matching Wompatuck State Park's typical camping season from mid-May to mid-October. Summer highs in Hingham average in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit with cool ocean breezes off Hingham Bay, while September often delivers crisp days in the low 70s, fewer mosquitoes, and quieter campgrounds. Spring evenings can dip into the 40s, so pack layers if you book in May. Fall foliage on the South Shore peaks in mid to late October, perfect for a Berkshires or New Hampshire extension. The second week of September often balances warm beach weather with cool sleeping temperatures and lower rates than August.
weather.gov/box/I have never rented an RV before, will I be okay?
You will be more than okay. First time renting an RV is exactly what RVezy is built for. Every host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump procedures. You can message the host with questions before booking, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included with your protection plan. For your debut trip, consider a travel trailer or Class C motorhome parked at Wompatuck State Park, less than 20 miles from downtown Boston yet quiet and wooded. Choose a host with strong reviews that mention a thorough walkthrough and you will feel confident before you even turn the key.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
Help is one phone call away. Every RV rental in Hingham booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something inside the RV stops working (fridge, generator, AC), message your host first; they often know exactly which fuse or switch to flip. For anything bigger, RVezy support steps in to help coordinate next steps. You are never stranded on Route 3 or out on Cape Cod with no plan. Save the roadside assistance number to your phone and screenshot it before you leave Hingham, since cell service can get spotty near the National Seashore.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take a Hingham RV rental into Canada or other states?
Multi-state road trips from Hingham are completely doable. You can typically cross into New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut, or New York with most listings. Cross-border travel into Canada (think Quebec City or the Bay of Fundy) may be allowed depending on the host and the insurance terms, so message the host directly from the listing to confirm before booking. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals and no insurance coverage applies there. Popular multi-state routes from Hingham include the Maine coast up to Acadia (about 290 miles) and the White Mountains loop (about 180 miles). Bring your passport for any Canadian leg.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost on a Hingham RV trip?
Fuel is easier to budget than you might think. Travel trailers don't burn extra gas beyond what your tow vehicle uses; campervans average about 18 to 22 MPG; Class C motorhomes get about 8 to 12 MPG; and Class A rigs typically 6 to 9 MPG. Massachusetts gas prices generally run slightly above the national average, with stations in Hingham, Weymouth, and Braintree along Route 3 offering reliable fill-ups. A weekend round-trip from Hingham to Provincetown (about 220 miles) in a Class C runs roughly $70 to $90 in fuel at typical recent prices. Top off in Hingham before crossing the Sagamore Bridge, since Cape Cod prices often climb in peak summer.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hingham?
Book early and you will have your pick of the best sites. Wompatuck State Park allows reservations up to six months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime summer weekends (especially July 4th and Labor Day) often fill within days of opening. Myles Standish State Forest and Cape Cod area KOA campgrounds follow similar booking windows. For September and early October trips, you can usually book 3 to 6 weeks ahead and still find great sites. Check the Wompatuck State Park page for any current closures or maintenance schedules before locking in dates. Lock in your campground first, then book your RV rental in Hingham to match those exact dates.
mass.gov/locations/wompatuck-state-parkWhat is driving an RV like around Hingham and the South Shore?
Driving in and out of Hingham is far easier than navigating downtown Boston. Route 3 and Route 3A handle most South Shore RV traffic with wide lanes and gentle grades. Avoid the narrow streets of Hingham Square in larger rigs and stick to Route 228, Derby Street, and the Route 3 corridor. Sagamore and Bourne Bridges onto Cape Cod can back up dramatically on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings in summer, so time your crossing for early morning. Nor'easters can bring snow December through March, so plan trips around the forecast. If Boston city driving makes you nervous, choose RV delivery Hingham and let the host handle the tight streets.
mass.gov/orgs/highway-divisionWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Hingham?
You will find solid amenities at most South Shore campgrounds. Wompatuck State Park offers a mix of electric and non-electric sites, water spigots throughout, a dump station, hot-shower bathhouses, and the well-known Mt. Blue Spring for fresh drinking water. Private parks like Boston/Cape Cod KOA add full hookups, Wi-Fi, pools, and camp stores. Note: Wompatuck doesn't have water or sewer at each site, so you will fill your fresh tank at a spigot and use the central dump on the way out. Quiet hours typically run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and Massachusetts restricts moving firewood into DCR campgrounds, so plan to buy it on-site.
mass.gov/locations/wompatuck-state-parkWhat is actually inside the RVs available for rent in Hingham?
Most Hingham RV rentals come fully equipped and ready to camp. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with toilet and shower, roof AC, propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many campervan rental Hingham options add solar panels, indoor/outdoor showers, and Bluetooth stereos, great for Cape Cod beach days. Larger Class A and Class C motorhome rental Hingham options often include generators, TVs, and even outdoor kitchens. Wi-Fi varies by host, and South Shore cell coverage is generally strong. Check each listing's amenity icons and message the host if you need a specific item like a coffee maker or a kid's bunk.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hingham%2C%20MassachusettsWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for RV rentals in Hingham?
Hosts offer popular add-ons that make your trip easier: camping chairs and tables, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, bikes, kayaks, generators, propane refills, and pet packages. Delivery and setup is the biggest one, with many hosts offering free delivery within a set radius of Hingham and a per-mile fee beyond that. Pickup typically happens at the host's home or driveway; some hosts offer Boston Logan Airport meetups (about 22 miles north) for out-of-town guests. Mileage policies range from around 100 free miles per night to unlimited mileage, with overage fees set by each host. Bundle delivery, bedding, and a full propane tank up front; it is usually cheaper than booking a la carte.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hingham%2C%20MassachusettsHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card at booking, with no cash changing hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment before pickup and released after a clean return with no damage, fuel topped off, and tanks dumped as agreed. Deposit amounts vary by RV and host. Avoid surprises by documenting the RV's condition with photos and video at pickup and drop-off, and following the host's mileage and generator-hour policies. Ask your host which dump station they prefer near Hingham (Wompatuck's is convenient) so you return the rig ready to go and the deposit is released quickly.
