Campgrounds near Reading, Massachusetts
Reading sits about ten miles north of Boston in Middlesex County, off Interstate 93 and Route 128. RV renters typically use the town as a launch point for camping in the North Shore forests, on the Boston Harbor Islands, or along the coastal routes toward New Hampshire and Maine.
The closest developed campground is Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park, located about 20 miles north of Boston across more than 3,000 acres of hardwood, hemlock and white pine forest, with 91 spread-out campsites. It is operated by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and is the main option in the area with electric hookups and a dump station for RVs.
Further south, camping on the Boston Harbor Islands is a boat-in experience. Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park currently offers active overnight camping only on Peddocks Island. Boston Harbor Islands - Thompson Island, Boston Harbor Islands - Peddocks Island, and Boston Harbor Islands - Grape Island are all part of this island system. Berry's Grove Campground in Tyngsboro adds a nearby private lakeside option, open year-round.
Things to do near Reading
At Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park, recreational opportunities include hiking, mountain biking, fishing, canoeing, hunting, horseback riding and picnicking, across a forest of rolling hills, low-lying swampy areas, rock outcrops and eleven ponds. The ponds support swimming and paddling in summer, and roughly 35 miles of trails are open to walkers and cyclists.
On the harbor islands, campers on Boston Harbor Islands - Peddocks Island can explore the Civil War-era Fort Andrews, walk wooded trails, and reach quiet beaches. Visitors can walk historic fort grounds, visit lighthouses, explore tidal pools, hike, camp under the stars, or fish, picnic, and swim, all within reach of downtown Boston.
Reading itself puts downtown Boston, Salem, and the Merrimack Valley within a short drive, making day trips easy from a base at Berry's Grove Campground or Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park.

The Massachusetts camping season is short. At Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park, the camping season typically runs from early May to Columbus Day weekend, with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Summer weekends fill quickly, so RV renters should plan several weeks ahead for July and August dates.
The harbor islands have an even tighter window. The Peddocks Island camping season runs from mid-June through Indigenous Peoples' Day in October, with sites available Wednesday to Saturday nights through Labor Day and then Thursday to Saturday nights through the fall closing. Ferry access ends when camping ends, so late-fall island trips are not possible.
Fall is a strong shoulder season inland. Foliage peaks late September through October across the North Shore, temperatures cool sharply overnight, and bugs fade. Winter camping is not offered at any of the state-run campgrounds; Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park and the Boston Harbor Islands sites all close after the fall shoulder. Berry's Grove Campground remains open year-round.

How to book a campsite near Reading
Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park and the Boston Harbor Islands sites are reserved through ReserveAmerica on the Massachusetts DCR system. Reservations can be made up to four months prior to the arrival date, and reservations are required, with no walk-in camping allowed. Advance reservations can be made same day up until 2 pm on the date of arrival.
For Boston Harbor Islands - Peddocks Island, campers must also book ferry transport. The ferry to Peddocks Island leaves from Hingham Shipyard, and there is no direct service from Boston. Book the ferry when the campsite is booked, since capacity is limited.
Berry's Grove Campground is a private operation and is booked directly through the campground. Check current availability, minimum-stay rules, and RV length limits before finalizing travel dates.
What to expect
Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park is the most RV-friendly option in the area. The campground has 91 campsites spread out for a real forest camping experience, each equipped with a picnic table, fire ring and pedestal grill, with a water spigot on each site, a dumping station, eleven campsites with 20/30/50 amp hookups, and comfort stations with showers and flush toilets. Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of any DCR campground, and firewood must be purchased at the campground.
Harbor island camping is rustic and tent-focused, not RV camping. On Peddocks Island there are composting toilets at each campground, with flush toilets and two showers at the Visitor Center, and drinking water is available on the island. Pets, fireworks, alcohol, and amplified sound are prohibited at island campgrounds. Plan to park the RV at Hingham Shipyard and ferry tent gear over.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Reading, MA
How much does an RV rental in Reading, MA typically cost?
RV rental in Reading is often more affordable than Boston-area travelers expect. On RVezy, travel trailers near Reading typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275 per night, and Class A rigs land between $250 and $400 per night. Pricing shifts with the seasons, so the cheapest RV rental Reading deals appear from late October through April, while peak summer weekends and fall foliage in early October book up quickly at premium rates. Pro tip: midweek pickups (Sunday through Thursday) often save 15 to 25 percent, and booking 60 or more days ahead helps secure the best rigs before New England's short summer demand spikes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Reading%2C%20MassachusettsDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Reading, MA?
A regular Massachusetts Class D driver's license (or its equivalent from any U.S. state or Canadian province) is all you need to rent an RV in Reading. Massachusetts only requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) above 26,001 pounds, and virtually every motorhome, campervan, and travel trailer on RVezy falls well below that limit. Renters must be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? An International Driving Permit paired with your home license keeps you road-legal. Most first-time renters find the process simpler than expected.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat's included to protect me during my Reading RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Reading booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-95 or Route 128 with peace of mind. The plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your level of coverage during checkout so you can pick what matches your comfort level and budget. While it isn't traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection alongside owner-provided coverage. Pro tip: review the plan options carefully at checkout, especially if you're a first-time renter heading up to the White Mountains or out to Cape Cod.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Reading RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a clear, platform-wide cancellation policy that includes a full money-back grace period right after you book, so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after that grace window depends on how far out from your trip you cancel, plus considerations for unusual circumstances like severe weather, which can matter here given New England nor'easters. Pro tip: book your RV rental Massachusetts adventure early to grab the best rigs for fall foliage and summer Cape weekends, knowing you have that grace window to finalize plans, request time off, and confirm campground reservations.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Reading, MA RV rental?
Yes, and Reading is a fantastic launch pad for dog lovers. Filter for pet-friendly RV rental Reading listings on RVezy with one click, and you'll find plenty of hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots (some charge a small pet fee, clearly listed up front). Once you're rolling, Harold Parker State Forest in nearby North Andover allows leashed dogs at most campsites with proof of current rabies vaccination, and the 3,500-acre forest has miles of dog-friendly trails. Closer to home, the Reading Town Forest and the Bay Circuit Trail offer easy leashed walks. Pro tip: pack the vaccination paperwork in your glovebox; Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) campgrounds will ask for it at check-in.
mass.gov/locations/harold-parker-state-forestCan the RV be delivered to me in Reading, MA?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your first New England RV trip. Many hosts offer RV delivery Reading service, meaning they'll drive the rig to your driveway, a local campground like Harold Parker State Forest, or even Logan-area hotels if you're flying in. To find them, toggle the Delivery filter on RVezy and enter your address or destination. Delivery fees vary by distance, but for nervous first-timers it removes the stress of city pickup and merging onto I-93. Your host also handles setup and a full walkthrough on arrival, so you'll know exactly how the slide-outs, awning, and hookups work before they wave goodbye.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Reading%2C%20MassachusettsHow far can I travel from Reading on my RV trip?
Reading is one of the best basecamps in the Northeast for a memorable RV road trip. Popular runs include the White Mountains and Conway, NH (about 2.5 hours, 130 miles), Acadia National Park in Maine (4.5 hours, 270 miles), Cape Cod and Hyannis (1.75 hours, 90 miles), the Berkshires and Lenox (2.5 hours, 130 miles), and Vermont's Green Mountains via Killington (3 hours, 165 miles). Each host sets their own mileage policy on RVezy: some include generous daily mileage, and a few offer RV rental with unlimited mileage that's perfect for longer loops. Pro tip: filter by mileage policy and message the host before booking to confirm your route fits comfortably.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Reading%2C%20MassachusettsWhat are the best campgrounds near Reading, MA?
You have excellent options within an hour of Reading. Harold Parker State Forest in North Andover (about 15 minutes north) offers roughly 89 wooded RV-friendly sites across 3,500 acres with swimming ponds. Boston/Cape Cod KOA in Middleboro (about 50 minutes south) has full hookups, a pool, and easy Cape access. Wompatuck State Park in Hingham (about 45 minutes) features 250+ sites with electric hookups and paved bike paths. Salisbury Beach State Reservation (about 40 minutes north) puts your RV camping Reading trip right on the Atlantic. For more upscale touches, Normandy Farms Family Camping Resort in Foxboro (about 45 minutes) is a Good Sam top-rated park. Pro tip: book Massachusetts DCR sites the moment your dates open (six months out via ReserveAmerica) for the best selection.
mass.gov/how-to/reserve-a-campsiteWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Reading, MA?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV rental Massachusetts adventures from Reading. June through August brings warm days averaging 75 to 82 degrees F, perfect for Cape Cod beaches and lake swims. The real local secret? Late September to mid-October, when temperatures sit in the 55 to 70 degrees F sweet spot and the foliage explodes across northern New England. Spring (April to mid-May) is cooler and quieter, with daytime highs in the 50s and 60s and excellent campsite availability. Winters are cold and snowy, with January lows around 21 degrees F, so most public campgrounds close from November through March. Pro tip: book leaf-peeping weekends by mid-July; they sell out faster than summer.
weather.gov/box/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be fine, and Reading is a smart place for first time renting an RV because hosts here are used to Boston-area newcomers. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup or delivery covering propane, water hookups, the generator, slide-outs, and dump procedures, plus they're a text away during your whole trip. Choose a smaller Class C or campervan rental Reading if city driving makes you nervous; they handle a lot like a large van. Pro tip: plan your first night at Harold Parker State Forest, only about 15 minutes from Reading, so if you forget something or want a quick refresher you're still close to home.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're never alone out there. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering items like flat tires, battery jumps, lockouts, and towing if the rig won't start. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for questions about how something works, and RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Massachusetts has dense tow-truck coverage along major routes like I-93, I-95, and Route 2, so help arrives quickly. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup and save your host's number plus RVezy's support line in your phone before leaving Reading.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Reading RV rental to Canada or other states?
Yes to both, with a quick conversation first. Many RVezy hosts in the Reading area welcome interstate travel throughout New England, New York, and beyond, which is great because you're roughly 2 hours from Vermont, 3 hours from New York's Adirondacks, and a scenic 5-hour drive to the Quebec border. Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed by some hosts (insurance permitting), so message the host directly from the listing before booking to confirm your route. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance coverage limits. Pro tip: if you're heading to Canada, bring your passport and ask the host for the vehicle registration and a written travel-authorization letter.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Reading?
Budgeting is easier than you'd think. Massachusetts gas prices typically run a bit above the U.S. average, and most rentals in the Reading area get realistic fuel economy of 8 to 10 mpg for Class A, 10 to 14 mpg for Class C, and 16 to 20 mpg for campervans (Class B). For a typical 4-day Cape Cod loop covering about 350 miles in a Class C, expect roughly $120 to $160 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up off the highway in towns like Reading, Wakefield, or Woburn before hopping on I-95, where prices climb at travel-plaza pumps. Apps like GasBuddy show the cheapest stations along your route in real time.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground near Reading?
Earlier is better, especially in New England. Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) campgrounds open reservations up to six months in advance on a rolling basis through ReserveAmerica, and prime summer weekends at Harold Parker, Salisbury Beach, and Wompatuck routinely sell out the day they open. Private parks like Normandy Farms book 3 to 6 months ahead for July and August. Pro tip: log into ReserveAmerica before your reservation window opens and have backup sites ready in case your first choice is taken.
mass.gov/how-to/reserve-a-campsiteWhat are driving conditions like around Reading, MA?
Once you know a few local quirks, driving here is very manageable. Reading sits at the junction of I-93 and I-95/Route 128, two of the region's busiest highways, so plan your departure for weekday mornings before 7 a.m. or after 10 a.m. (and avoid Friday afternoons heading north). Many older parkways inside Route 128, like Storrow Drive and the Jamaicaway in Boston, have low clearances and restrict trucks and RVs, so always route via the interstates. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March. Pro tip: stick to the main highways heading to New Hampshire, Maine, or the Cape, and consider RV delivery if you're nervous about navigating downtown Boston.
mass.gov/info-details/massachusetts-law-about-low-clearance-bridgesWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Reading?
You'll have plenty of comfort options. Public DCR parks like Harold Parker State Forest and Wompatuck State Park offer RV sites with electric hookups (typically 30-amp at many sites), clean restrooms with hot showers, dump stations, and potable water fill points. Private parks like Normandy Farms in Foxboro and Boston/Cape Cod KOA in Middleboro add full hookups (sewer included), 50-amp service, Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. Most campgrounds near Reading sell firewood on site (Massachusetts discourages bringing your own to slow invasive pests). Pro tip: many hosts will dump the tanks for you for a small add-on fee at the end of your trip if you'd rather skip the dump station.
mass.gov/camping-at-massachusetts-state-parksWhat features and amenities come with RVs in Reading?
Most rentals are road-trip-ready right out of the gate. Expect comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 (queen beds, convertible dinettes, bunks), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a wet or dry bath with toilet and shower, climate control with air conditioning and furnace, and seat belts for travel passengers. Many Class A and Class C motorhome rental Reading listings include onboard generators, flat-screen TVs, and outdoor speakers; some hosts even offer Wi-Fi hotspots, bedding packages, and bike racks as add-ons. Pro tip: message the host before booking with your must-haves (think outdoor shower for sandy Cape Cod feet, or a generator for boondocking in the White Mountains) so you book exactly the right rig.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Reading%2C%20MassachusettsWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in the Reading area offer plenty of extras to make your family RV trip Reading easier. Common add-ons include bedding and towel packages, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, propane fire pits, bike racks, kayaks or SUPs, generators for off-grid camping, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Pickup and dropoff happen at the host's location or via delivery for a fee. Mileage policies vary: some hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day, others offer unlimited mileage packages, and overage typically runs around $0.35 to $0.50 per mile. Pro tip: bundling delivery, dump service, and a bedding package often costs less than handling it all yourself, especially for shorter weekend trips up to the Lakes Region.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Reading%2C%20MassachusettsHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled through the RVezy platform, so no cash or off-platform transfers are ever needed. You pay your trip total at booking, and a refundable security deposit is held separately before pickup (the amount is set by the host and shown on the listing). As long as the RV comes back in the condition you received it, with no traffic violations or excess mileage, your deposit is released back to your original payment method shortly after the trip ends. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video walkaround of the interior and exterior at both pickup and dropoff. It's the single best way to keep your security deposit refund smooth and fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle winter and cold-weather RV rentals from Reading?
Winter RVing from Reading is doable and surprisingly magical, you just need the right rig. Look for listings on RVezy described as four-season or winter-ready, with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable propane furnaces. Hosts will brief you on shore-power use, antifreeze in the gray and black tanks, and how to winterize quickly if a deep freeze hits (January lows in Reading average around 21 degrees F). Some private parks like Normandy Farms in Foxboro stay open year-round with full hookups. Pro tip: combine your trip with ski weekends at Loon, Cannon, or Sunday River, where nearby campgrounds and resort RV options turn the rig into a slope-side basecamp for a fraction of the lodging cost.
