The forest covers more than 3,000 acres of hardwood, hemlock, and white pine, with hiking, mountain biking, fishing, canoeing, hunting, horseback riding, and picnicking available on site. On the water, the harbor islands offer a mix of history and shoreline. Visitors can walk Civil War-era fortifications, tour historic lighthouses, explore tide pools, hike trails, and picnic within sight of downtown Boston. Boston Harbor Islands - Bumpkin Island and Boston Harbor Islands - Grape Island are reached by ferry from Hingham for day hikes, while Boston Harbor Islands - Thompson Island opens to the public on select dates through its education partner. Closer to Saugus itself, families can pair camp nights with the Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site, Breakheart Reservation trails, and the beaches of Nahant and Revere.

Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of any DCR campground, and doing so may result in eviction. Peddocks has potable drinking water and a ranger station; the other islands do not, so day visitors should carry water in and pack trash out.
