Camping near Stoneham, Massachusetts
Stoneham sits about 10 miles north of downtown Boston in Middlesex County, ringed by the Middlesex Fells Reservation and within easy driving distance of the North Shore, the Merrimack Valley, and Boston Harbor. There is no campground inside Stoneham itself, so RV renters typically base themselves at state-managed campgrounds to the north or at the island tent and yurt sites in Boston Harbor to the southeast.
The closest developed RV option is Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park in Andover, roughly 20 miles up I-93. The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation runs the campground, which offers wooded sites, a dump station, and a small number of sites with electric hookups. Reservations are handled through ReserveAmerica.
For a very different trip, DCR also operates rustic tent and yurt camping in the Boston Harbor Islands, reachable only by ferry from Hingham Shipyard. Peddocks Island is the sole island in the group currently accepting overnight campers; Thompson, Grape, and Bumpkin Islands are day-use destinations for anyone staying at an RV base near Stoneham.
Things to do around Stoneham
The Middlesex Fells Reservation borders Stoneham directly and offers more than 100 miles of trails, several reservoirs, and paved paths suitable for family bike rides. Stone Zoo sits within town limits and is an easy afternoon for younger kids. Downtown Boston, Cambridge, and Fenway Park are all reachable by car or by MBTA commuter rail from nearby Wakefield and Melrose stations.
At Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park, campers use the site as a base for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and paddling across roughly 3,000 acres of hardwood, hemlock, and white pine forest. On the water side, day trips to Boston Harbor Islands - Thompson Island, Boston Harbor Islands - Peddocks Island, Boston Harbor Islands - Grape Island, and Boston Harbor Islands - Bumpkin Island add swimming, tidepools, and Civil War-era fort ruins to the itinerary.

The camping season around Stoneham is short. Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park typically runs from early May to Columbus Day weekend, and the Boston Harbor Islands run on an even tighter calendar. The island camping season runs from mid-June to mid-October, with sites available Wednesday through Saturday nights through Labor Day, then Thursday through Saturday nights until Indigenous Peoples' Day.
July and August are peak season: warm, humid, and busiest at both inland campgrounds and the ferries out of Hingham. Late June and the first half of September tend to be the sweet spot for families, with warm days, cooler nights, and lighter mosquito pressure than midsummer. Fall foliage across eastern Massachusetts typically peaks in mid to late October, overlapping the final weekend of the DCR inland season.
Winter camping is not available at these sites. Ferries to the harbor islands do not run, and Lorraine Park is closed. RV renters visiting Boston off-season generally use private RV parks farther out or day-trip from indoor lodging.

How to book campgrounds near Stoneham
Both the inland and island campgrounds closest to Stoneham are run by the Massachusetts DCR and reserved through ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to four months prior to arrival, are required, and no walk-in camping is allowed. Summer weekends at Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park book out quickly, so plan to reserve the moment the four-month window opens.
Boston Harbor Islands camping is also booked through ReserveAmerica, and campers reserve ferry tickets separately through the Peddocks Island ticketing page. Ferry capacities are limited, and campers are strongly encouraged to book ferry passage immediately after making their camping reservation. Free overnight parking for campers is available at Hingham Shipyard with a placard picked up at check-in.
What to expect at campgrounds near Stoneham
Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park is the practical choice for RV renters. The campground has 91 campsites spread out for a real forest feel, each with a picnic table, fire ring, pedestal grill, and water spigot; a dump station is available, eleven sites have 20/30/50 amp hookups, and comfort stations have showers and flush toilets. Cell service can be spotty in the wooded interior, and firewood must be purchased on site because Massachusetts prohibits transporting outside firewood into DCR campgrounds.
The Boston Harbor Islands are a rustic, tent-and-yurt experience rather than an RV destination. On the islands there are composting toilets only, no showers, no supplies, and access to fresh water is available only on Peddocks Island. Campers should plan to base an RV inland and day-trip to Thompson, Peddocks, Grape, or Bumpkin Islands via ferry.

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Massachusetts, even for the biggest Class A motorhomes. There is no special RV endorsement or commercial driver's license required by the state. To book on RVezy, approved drivers are generally required to be at least 25 years old, and you will verify your ID through the platform during checkout in just a few minutes. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home country's auto association before your trip. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the requirements really are.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Stoneham RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy, and every reservation includes a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. Beyond the grace period, refund amounts depend on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. If a host cancels your booking, RVezy will help you find a replacement rental or issue a refund. You will see the exact cancellation details before you confirm payment. Pro tip: book early to lock in summer Cape Cod dates, knowing you have flexibility if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Stoneham RV rental?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Stoneham is easy to find on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you will see plenty of welcoming options. Many hosts in the Boston metro allow dogs, sometimes with a small cleaning fee. Once you are on the road, your pup will love the Middlesex Fells Reservation right in Stoneham (leashed dogs welcome on the trails), or head to Harold Parker State Forest where leashed pets are permitted at the campsites. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet details and to ask about local dog-friendly beaches like Crane Beach in nearby Ipswich (off-season only for dogs).
mass.gov/locations/middlesex-fells-reservationCan the RV be delivered to me in Stoneham?
Yes, RV delivery in Stoneham is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who would rather not drive a big rig through the I-93 and I-95 interchange. Many hosts will deliver the RV directly to your driveway, a local campground like Boston Minuteman Campground in Littleton, or even straight to Cape Cod. They will set it up, level it, connect hookups if available, and walk you through everything from the propane to the awning. Just use the Delivery filter when you search. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer if you are renting a larger Class A and want to skip Boston-area traffic entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stoneham,%20MassachusettsHow far can I drive on a Stoneham RV trip?

From here you can reach Cape Cod in about 90 minutes (75 miles), the White Mountains of New Hampshire in about 2 hours (130 miles), Acadia National Park in Maine in about 5 hours (280 miles), the Berkshires in about 2.5 hours (135 miles), or Vermont's Green Mountains in roughly 3 hours (180 miles). Pro tip: ask the host upfront about their daily mileage cap and the per-mile overage fee, then map your route in advance so you can pick the listing that best fits your itinerary.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stoneham,%20MassachusettsWhere can I camp near Stoneham in my RV?
Some of the best campgrounds near Stoneham are within an hour's drive. Harold Parker State Forest in North Andover (about 20 minutes north) offers wooded sites with electric hookups at select loops. Boston Minuteman Campground in Littleton (about 35 minutes west) has full hookups and a pool, great for families. Wompatuck State Park in Hingham (about 45 minutes south) has hundreds of sites with electric hookups and great biking trails. Normandy Farms in Foxborough (about 45 minutes south) is a resort-style park with full hookups, pools, and live entertainment. Pro tip: state park sites book up fast for summer weekends, so reserve as early as possible through the Massachusetts state parks reservation system.
mass.gov/info-details/reserving-a-campsite-or-camping-cabinWhen is the best time for an RV trip from Stoneham?
Late spring through mid-fall is prime time for RV camping in Stoneham and across New England. May and June bring mild days in the 60s and 70s and lush forests; July and August are the warmest (often 75 to 88 degrees) and best for Cape Cod beaches; and September through mid-October is the legendary New England fall foliage season, when the maples and birches around the Middlesex Fells light up. Winters are cold (often 20 to 35 degrees) with snow, so most hosts pause bookings from late November through March. Pro tip: book your foliage trip 3 to 6 months ahead, since leaf-peeper weekends sell out fast across the region.
weather.gov/box/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will do great, first time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, and RVezy hosts make it simple. At pickup, your host will give you a hands-on orientation covering driving tips, hookups, slide-outs, the generator, and how to dump tanks. Many also send video walkthroughs in advance. If you are nervous about driving in Boston-area traffic, choose a smaller Class B campervan or book delivery so the RV is waiting for you at your campground. You are never alone on the trip: hosts are reachable by message, and RVezy support plus 24/7 roadside assistance are just a call away. Pro tip: plan a shorter first trip, like an hour up to Salisbury Beach, to build confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down on my trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are stuck on I-95 outside Stoneham or parked at a campground in the Berkshires. Roadside covers things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing to a qualified service center. Your host is also typically available by message for quick troubleshooting questions, like resetting a tripped GFCI outlet or relighting a pilot. Pro tip: take a quick photo of the RV's exterior and dashboard at pickup, save the roadside number in your phone, and you will be set for whatever the road brings.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Stoneham RV rental into Canada or other states?
Interstate travel is generally fine. An RV road trip from Stoneham easily reaches all six New England states plus New York. Many guests head to New Hampshire's Lakes Region, Vermont's Lake Champlain, Maine's coast, or down to the Jersey Shore. Cross-border travel to Canada (think Quebec City or the Bay of Fundy) may be allowed depending on the host and insurance, so confirm directly with the host before booking and have your passport ready. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: a popular long-weekend loop is Stoneham to Portland, Maine, up to Bar Harbor, and back, about 600 miles of stunning coastline and lobster shacks.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Stoneham RV trip?
Fuel is one of your biggest variables, so it helps to plan ahead. Most Class C motorhomes get about 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A's run 6 to 10 mpg, and campervans can reach 16 to 20 mpg. Massachusetts gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, with diesel slightly higher than regular. For a 4-day trip from Stoneham to Cape Cod and back (around 250 miles), expect to spend roughly $80 to $140 on fuel in a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in New Hampshire when crossing the border, gas there is typically cheaper per gallon than Massachusetts.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Stoneham?
For Massachusetts state parks, reservations open about 6 months ahead, and prime summer weekends at places like Wompatuck State Park or Nickerson State Park on the Cape can sell out within hours of opening. Private campgrounds like Normandy Farms and Boston Minuteman take reservations up to a year out and also fill quickly for July and August. Aim to book your campsite as soon as you confirm your RV rental in Stoneham, ideally 3 to 6 months ahead for peak season. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) are dramatically easier to book and often quieter, perfect for a relaxed family RV trip in Stoneham.
mass.gov/info-details/reserving-a-campsite-or-camping-cabinWhat's it like driving an RV around Stoneham and Boston?
Stoneham itself is RV-friendly with wide suburban roads and easy access to I-93 and I-95, which makes heading north or to the Cape simple. The trick is avoiding downtown Boston: the Sumner and Callahan tunnels have height restrictions, and Storrow Drive is famously off-limits to anything over about 7 feet (Google 'Storrowing' for a laugh). Stick to the interstates and you will be fine. Watch for rush-hour congestion on I-93 southbound (6 to 9 a.m.) and northbound (3 to 7 p.m.). Pro tip: if city driving feels intimidating, choose RV delivery in Stoneham and let the host bring it to you, then drive straight out to the highway.
mass.gov/orgs/highway-divisionWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Stoneham?
New England campgrounds range from rustic to resort-style. State parks like Harold Parker and Wompatuck offer electric-only hookups (no water or sewer at most sites), shared bathhouses with hot showers, and centralized dump stations. Private parks like Normandy Farms and Boston Minuteman feature full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, pools, laundry, and camp stores. To fill fresh water tanks before heading out, most campgrounds have a potable fill station near the entrance. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot drinking-safe water hose and a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter and you will be ready for almost any site in the region.
mass.gov/locations/wompatuck-state-parkWhat's typically included inside a Stoneham RV rental?
You will be impressed by how well-equipped these rigs are. Most motorhome rentals in Stoneham come with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping for 4 to 8 people, climate control with heat and air conditioning, dinette and lounge seating with seatbelts for travel, and house batteries with shore power capability. Many also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and an onboard generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi and bedding are sometimes included and sometimes offered as add-ons. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list carefully and message the host if you need specifics like a CPAP-friendly outlet, kid booster seats, or extra pots and pans.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stoneham,%20MassachusettsWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Stoneham offer a range of helpful add-ons that make your trip smoother: linens and towels packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, generators for trailers, bike racks, and even pre-stocked propane tanks. Pickup is usually at the host's home address in or near Stoneham, with a typical 30 to 60 minute orientation. Mileage policies vary by host: some include 100 to 150 free miles per day, others offer unlimited mileage, and overage fees typically range from about $0.35 to $0.50 per mile. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linens package on your first trip, it is worth every penny for the convenience.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stoneham,%20MassachusettsHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and handled securely through RVezy: you pay for your rental through the platform when you book, with no cash changing hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and is released back to your card after the trip if there is no damage and the RV is returned with the agreed-upon fuel and tank levels. Pro tip: take a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off, including the interior and odometer. It is a 2-minute habit that prevents most deposit disputes and keeps your Stoneham RV rental experience smooth from start to finish.
