Campgrounds near Wakefield, Massachusetts
Wakefield sits about 12 miles north of downtown Boston in Middlesex County, giving RV travelers quick access to both the city and the wooded state parks north of Route 128. The town itself has no RV campground, so most visitors base out of Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park, roughly 20 minutes north in Andover, or use one of the Boston Harbor Islands campsites as a tent-only side trip while parking the RV on the mainland.
Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park is the closest full-service campground and the only option in the immediate area that accommodates RVs. It is a Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation property with 91 wooded sites spread through hardwood, hemlock, and white pine forest. Eleven sites have 20/30/50 amp electric hookups, every site has a water spigot, and a dump station is available on the property.
The Boston Harbor Islands State and National Park includes 34 islands and peninsulas within the greater Boston Harbor basin. Overnight camping is currently offered only on Peddocks Island, which is tent and yurt camping reached by ferry from Hingham Shipyard or by private boat.
Things to do near Wakefield
Lake Quannapowitt sits in the center of Wakefield with a paved loop popular for walking, running, and stroller pushing. Downtown has family-friendly restaurants, an ice cream shop on the common, and commuter-rail access into Boston's North Station for day trips to Faneuil Hall, the Freedom Trail, and the New England Aquarium.
Outdoor time centers on Harold Parker State Forest, which has swimming ponds, miles of hiking trails, and mountain-biking routes within a short drive of Lorraine Park. Middlesex Fells Reservation, just south of Wakefield, adds more hiking, a skyline tower, and Spot Pond.
For a harbor day, take the ferry from Hingham Shipyard out to Peddocks Island. Visitors can walk a Civil War-era fort, visit historic lighthouses, hike wooded trails, and picnic or swim, all within reach of downtown Boston.

The RV camping season around Wakefield is short. Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park typically opens in early May and runs through Columbus Day weekend in mid-October, with some late-season weekends offered Thursday through Sunday into late October. Outside those dates, campgrounds in the region are closed and the RV needs to be based farther south or in a private park that stays open shoulder season.
Boston Harbor Islands camping runs a similarly narrow calendar. The season on Peddocks Island runs mid-June through mid-October, with sites available Wednesday through Saturday nights until Labor Day, and then Thursday through Saturday nights through Indigenous Peoples Day. Camping is offered only on Peddocks; the other Boston Harbor Islands on this list, including Thompson, Grape, and Bumpkin, are day-use only under current park operations.
Summer weekends fill fastest. July and August are peak; September delivers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong foliage color moving into mid-October. Winter and early spring bring freezing temperatures, closed bathhouses, and no ferry service to Peddocks.

We had an amazing trip to Cape Cod. AR was very helpful and communicative prior to the trip and on arrival for pick up. The RV was great for our family of 4. It was very clean and felt new.

How to book
Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park is reserved through the Massachusetts DCR camping portal on ReserveAmerica. Popular summer weekends often sell out weeks in advance, so book as soon as dates are set. Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of any DCR campground, so plan to buy wood on site.
Boston Harbor Islands camping is also booked through ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to four months in advance of check-in, and walk-up reservations are not permitted. Campers are strongly encouraged to book ferry passage from Hingham Shipyard immediately after making their camping reservation, since ferry capacity is limited.
For RV renters, secure the mainland campground first, then add any island tent or yurt night as a car-and-ferry side trip from Hingham.
What to expect on arrival
Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park is a wooded DCR campground with picnic tables, fire rings with pedestal grills, and comfort stations that include flush toilets and hot showers. Each site has a water spigot; eleven sites offer 20/30/50 amp electric hookups; a dump station is on the property. Cell service can be spotty under the tree canopy. Interior roads are paved but tight, so larger Class A rigs should confirm site length in advance.
Peddocks Island is more primitive. Each campground has composting toilets, and flush toilets and two showers are available at the Visitor Center. Fresh drinking water is provided on Peddocks, but campers should still bring at least one gallon per person per day as a buffer. Campfires are not allowed at campsites but are permitted below the high tide mark. Pets are not allowed on the islands.
