Campgrounds near Chassell, Michigan
Chassell sits on the Sturgeon River sloughs at the base of Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, along US-41 between Houghton and L'Anse. The village serves as a practical staging point for RV travelers heading into the Keweenaw, the Porcupine Mountains, or the Ottawa National Forest, with Lake Superior shoreline in nearly every direction.
Camping options within a short drive range from tribal sites to Michigan state parks. Sand Point - Ojibwa Recreation Area sits on Keweenaw Bay near Baraga, and the Ojibwa Casino RV Park in Baraga offers paved full-hookup sites with Wi-Fi and picnic tables, operated by the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and located steps from the Ojibwa Casino Baraga.
For state-park camping, Baraga State Park sits a quarter mile south of Baraga along US-41 and overlooks Keweenaw Bay of Lake Superior, with grassy modern sites plus a mini-cabin and teepee. Twin Lakes State Park lies west on M-26 on Lake Roland, and Sunset Bay RV Resort and Campground rounds out the nearby private options.
Things to do around Chassell
The Keweenaw Bay shoreline is the main draw. Visitors swim, fish, and boat along Keweenaw Bay during the warmer months, and kayak launches are common along the protected inner bay. Chassell itself hosts an annual Strawberry Festival in July and has a small heritage museum.
Day trips fan out in every direction. North on US-41 reach Houghton, Hancock, Calumet, and eventually Copper Harbor at the tip of the peninsula. West lies the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park and the Ottawa National Forest, including waterfalls like Bond Falls and Canyon Falls.
ORV riders have unusual access here. Baraga State Park is one of just a few state parks that allow ORV operation between the campground and nearby ORV trails, and the park connects to Twin Lakes and Bewabic state parks and Bond Falls Scenic Site via several motorized routes.

The RV season in this part of the Upper Peninsula is short and concentrated. Michigan state park modern campgrounds in the area, including Twin Lakes, typically operate from mid-May through mid-October, with water systems shut off outside that window due to hard freezes. The prime window runs June through August, when the weather is warm and the parks are fully active.
Blackfly and mosquito pressure peaks from late May into early July, especially near the Sturgeon River sloughs. By August, biting insects taper and lake temperatures reach their warmest. Autumn brings a strong display of fall foliage, generally peaking in late September through early October across the Keweenaw.
Winters are harsh, with heavy snowfall limiting access to certain areas. The Keweenaw sits in the Lake Superior snowbelt and routinely records some of the highest annual snowfall in the eastern United States, so most campgrounds close entirely, and only snowmobile-oriented lodging stays active.
How to book campgrounds near Chassell
Michigan state parks use a single central system. Campsites, overnight lodging, and harbor slips can be reserved at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-447-2757. Sites at Baraga State Park and Twin Lakes State Park are bookable up to six months in advance on a rolling window, and popular summer weekends fill quickly.
A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into state parks and recreation areas, state boat launches, state forest campgrounds, and state trail parking lots. It can be added at license renewal or purchased on arrival.
Ojibwa Casino RV Park is booked directly through the casino, and Sand Point - Ojibwa Recreation Area is managed by the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. Private options like Sunset Bay RV Resort and Campground take reservations directly through the operator.
What to expect on arrival
At Michigan state parks, campsite check-in starts at 3 p.m. with checkout at 1 p.m., and quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. Self-registration is available after office hours at the contact station.
Sites near the bay are open and grassy with limited tree cover, so afternoon sun and lake wind are both factors. Baraga State Park accommodates both tent camping and RVs, with several pull-through sites and 20- and 30-amp electrical service, though some positioning can be tight for larger rigs. Bring leveling blocks and check site length before booking.
Cell coverage is spotty once travel moves off US-41 into the interior. Grocery runs are easiest in Houghton or L'Anse, and firewood should be purchased locally to avoid transporting invasive pests.
