Campgrounds near Dollar Bay, Michigan
Dollar Bay sits on the Portage Waterway in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, a few miles east of Houghton and Hancock. The village makes a practical staging point for RV trips exploring the western Upper Peninsula, with Lake Superior shoreline, Copper Country state forests, and the Portage Lake ship canal all within a short drive.
Closest to town, Sunset Bay RV Resort and Campground offers full-hookup sites along the waterway. Farther south in Baraga, Ojibwa Casino RV Park is owned and operated by the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and offers paved full-hookup sites steps from the casino. Sand Point, part of the Ojibwa Recreation Area on Keweenaw Bay, adds a beach-oriented option managed by the tribal community with electric hookups and a fill and dump station.
For state-park camping, two Michigan DNR units anchor the region. Baraga State Park sits along US-41 just south of Baraga and overlooks Keweenaw Bay of Lake Superior, with 118 sites including a mix of full-hookup and electric-only options plus a mini cabin. Twin Lakes State Park lies southwest of Dollar Bay near Toivola on the shore of Lake Roland, offering a warmer inland-lake alternative for swimming and family camping.
Things to do near Dollar Bay
Water is the main draw. Keweenaw Bay supports swimming, fishing, and boating during the warmer months, and paddlers use protected coves along the Portage Waterway. Lake Roland at Twin Lakes tends to warm earlier than Lake Superior, making it a better bet for families with young swimmers.
Motorized recreation is unusually accessible here. Twin Lakes State Park is one of the few state parks that allows ORV operation between the campground and nearby ORV trails, with connections to Bewabic and Baraga state parks and Bond Falls Scenic Site via designated motorized routes. In winter, the same corridors including the Bill Nicholls Trail carry heavy snowmobile traffic.
Day trips from Dollar Bay reach the Bishop Baraga Shrine, the Sturgeon River Gorge, Canyon Falls, the Keweenaw National Historic Park in Calumet, and the tip of the peninsula at Copper Harbor.

The camping season on the Keweenaw is short and weather-driven. Most public campgrounds open in mid to late May and close by mid-October, with a narrow window of reliably warm weather. The best stretch for camping runs from June through August, when daytime highs typically reach the mid-70s Fahrenheit and inland lakes warm enough for swimming. July and August book heaviest, especially around holiday weekends.
Early fall brings the region's signature color. Sugar maple, birch, and aspen peak from late September into early October across the interior. Nights cool quickly after Labor Day, and lake-effect precipitation increases into autumn, with September and October typically among the wettest months of the year.
Winter changes the character of the area entirely. Winters are long and snowy, with the Keweenaw receiving well over 100 inches of snow in a typical year. Modern state-park loops close, but snowmobile trails, ice fishing on inland lakes, and private RV parks with plowed access continue to draw cold-weather travelers.
How to book campgrounds near Dollar Bay
Michigan state park sites at Baraga State Park and Twin Lakes State Park are reserved through the state's central system at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-447-2757. Campsites, overnight lodging, and harbor slips can be reserved up to six months in advance of the arrival date on a rolling daily basis, so summer weekends are best claimed early in the year. New inventory drops at 8 a.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends.
A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into state parks, state boat launches, state forest campgrounds, and state trail parking lots. Michigan residents can add it when renewing license plates.
Ojibwa Casino RV Park and Sand Point at the Ojibwa Recreation Area are booked directly through the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, and Sunset Bay RV Resort and Campground takes bookings on its own site or by phone.
What to expect at Dollar Bay campgrounds
Sites vary widely in privacy and services. Baraga State Park sits along Keweenaw Bay with US-41 running between the campground and the water, so many sites have open lake views but limited tree buffer from highway noise. The park offers 118 sites including full-hookup, electric-only, and tent options, plus 20/30/50-amp service on some sites, a sanitation station, two bathhouses, and a mini cabin.
Ojibwa Casino RV Park is compact and paved, better suited to overnight stops than long stays. It features 12 paved full-hookup sites with Wi-Fi and picnic tables, and guests have access to the Ojibwa Hotel's pool, sauna, and hot tub.
Cell coverage is spotty away from US-41. Biting insects, especially blackflies in June and mosquitoes into July, are the standard Upper Peninsula nuisance, so screens and repellent are essentials.
