Campgrounds and RV parks near Presque Isle Harbor, MI

The Old Presque Isle Lighthouse, built in 1840, is one of the oldest surviving lighthouses on the Great Lakes, and the keeper's dwelling serves as a hands-on museum. A mile north, the New Presque Isle Light, built in 1870, is the tallest lighthouse tower accessible by the public on the Great Lakes, set on a 99-acre township park that includes a playground, picnic area, pavilion and nature trails. Lake Huron access drives most other activities: swimming and beach days at Hoeft State Park, kayaking and boat launches on Grand Lake and Lake Esau, and shipwreck diving or glass-bottom boat tours out of Alpena in Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The paved Huron Sunrise Trail links Hoeft State Park with Rogers City for cycling.

The main RV season runs from May through mid-October. The New Presque Isle Lighthouse and grounds are open from mid-May to mid-October, and the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse grounds are open daily 10am to 5pm mid-May through Labor Day, then Friday to Monday from 10am-5pm until mid-October. July and August are peak months, when both state park sites and lakefront private sites book up well in advance. The moderating effect of Lake Huron causes temperatures to be less extreme during both summer and winter and also causes up to two weeks delay in season changes compared to a few miles inland. Spring arrives late and can be cool and wet, while September brings warm days, lower humidity, and reduced bug pressure, making it a strong shoulder-season choice. Winter closes most campgrounds. Snow, ice cover on inland lakes, and short daylight hours limit RV use, though the area supports snowmobiling and cross-country skiing on connecting trail networks.

PH Hoeft State Park has a modern campground with 126 campsites and a mini cabin, plus a 1920s-era Sears and Roebuck Lodge near the campground entrance that sleeps eight. Sites range from heavily wooded to more open, with lower-numbered sites offering more tree coverage and canopy, while higher-numbered sites sit closer to the highway. Campers Cove RV and Campground provides full-hookup RV sites with typical private-park amenities. Long Lake Park and Sunken Lake Park lean rustic, with lake access, boat launches, and basic facilities suited to smaller rigs. Alpena County Fairgrounds provides utility hookups but a more open, event-lot feel. Expect biting insects from late May into early July at wooded and inland sites. Michigan requires campers to buy certified heat-treated firewood locally rather than hauling it in, to limit the spread of invasive tree pests.
