Camping near Glenville, Minnesota
Glenville sits in Freeborn County in southern Minnesota, just north of the Iowa border and a short drive south of Albert Lea along the Shell Rock River. The area is flat farmland cut by glacial lakes and wetlands, and it functions as a quick I-35 stopover for RV travellers moving between the Twin Cities and Des Moines.
The main camping draw is Myre-Big Island State Park, a Minnesota state park just outside Albert Lea that protects shoreline along Albert Lea Lake. The park runs two drive-in campgrounds used by RV travellers: Big Island - Myre-Big Island State Park and White Fox - Myre-Big Island State Park. Big Island Campground has 34 wooded sites with 17 electrical hookups and one camper cabin, while White Fox Campground has 59 open sites with 15 electrical hookups.
Private options fill in the gaps for travellers who want full hookups or resort amenities. Albert Lea / Austin KOA Journey serves highway travellers on the I-35 corridor, while Happy Times Resort and Oakwoods Trails Campground offer private-park stays within a short drive of Glenville.
Things to do near Glenville
Most activity centres on Albert Lea Lake and the trail network inside Myre-Big Island State Park. The park's trail system passes through oak savanna, prairie, wetland marshes, and Big Island's shaded hardwood forest, ranging from easy lakeside strolls to moderate hikes through rolling glacial terrain. The paved Blazing Star State Trail winds through prairie landscapes within the park and connects toward Albert Lea, suited to biking and accessible walking.
On the water, rental canoes are available and anglers have lake access. Albert Lea Lake holds black bullhead, carp, northern pike, and various panfish.
Birders time trips to migration windows. Spring migration in April and May offers the most spectacular birding, with thousands of waterfowl and shorebirds passing through, and fall migration in September and October is equally impressive.

The prime RV window in southern Minnesota runs from late May through early October. Summer brings warm days, active shorelines, and full campground programming, but it is also the busiest booking season. Weekends at Myre-Big Island fill early, and travellers targeting a Friday or Saturday arrival should plan to book at the opening of the reservation window.
Spring and fall are quieter, though shoulder-season weather is variable. The growing season typically runs from the last frost around late April through the first frost in early October, so mid-April and late-October trips can see freezing overnight lows. Fall foliage in the park's hardwood stands generally peaks in early to mid-October.
Winter camping is possible but stripped down. Myre-Big Island offers year-round camping with 10 winter-accessible sites including a heated cabin, and winter activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing on Albert Lea Lake. During cold-weather visits, the bathhouse and water spigots may be closed, though vault toilets remain open.
How to book campsites near Glenville
The two state park campgrounds inside Myre-Big Island are booked through the Minnesota DNR reservation system. Reservations for camping or lodging are available up to 120 days before arrival, online 24 hours a day except for the first day a reservation becomes available, when bookings open at 8 a.m. central time. Campers can reserve sites online at mndnr.gov/reservations or by phone at 866-857-2757.
All campsites in Minnesota state parks and recreation areas require a reservation year-round, including sites that are open in the winter. Overnight guests need a state park vehicle permit in addition to a camping or lodging reservation, which can be added at the time of booking or purchased on arrival.
Private campgrounds such as Albert Lea / Austin KOA Journey, Happy Times Resort, and Oakwoods Trails Campground handle bookings through their own websites or the KOA reservation platform. Holiday weekends at private parks along I-35 also fill early and should be booked well in advance.
What to expect on-site
The state park campgrounds offer two distinct feels. Big Island Campground sits on an island in Albert Lea Lake, connected to the mainland by a short causeway, with shady, private campsites suitable for larger rigs, though tree cover between neighbors is uneven. White Fox is more open on the mainland side, with better exposure for solar and satellite.
The campgrounds feature modern facilities including flush toilets and hot showers. Cell service is available on-site, and the park sits within a few miles of Albert Lea, making resupply straightforward. The park's dump station is generally open from late April until late October, and a year-round dump station is available three miles away at the Trails Truck Stop.
Quiet hours, leashed pets, and fire-ring-only campfires are standard. Private parks near Glenville typically offer full hookups and family amenities, while state park sites lean toward electric-only with shared water spigots.
