Campgrounds and RV parks near Jackson, MO

The Mississippi River is the main draw. At Mississippi River - Trail of Tears State Park, visitors can hike, swim at the Lake Boutin beach, and fish the lake or river shoreline. The lake features a designated swimming area and boat launch restricted to electric motors only, and fishing opportunities exist both in the lake and along the Mississippi River shoreline, where campers catch catfish from the bank near the boat ramp. The visitor center covers Cherokee history and the forced relocation of the late 1830s. Hiking options include the Peewah Trail loops inside Trail of Tears State Park, with a backpack camp located on White Connector 2 for larger groups, and trails through the Ozark Hills at Trail Of Tears State Forest. Horseback riding is permitted along designated horse trails, with access and trailer parking available at the equestrian trailhead. Jackson itself provides groceries and services, and Cape Girardeau, about 15 minutes south, adds a nature center, riverfront, and full-service shopping.

The region has a humid subtropical climate with hot, muggy summers and cold, wet winters. Summer is a busy time at Trail of Tears State Park, though the weather may be humid and reach temperatures above 90 degrees. April is typically the wettest month, and thunderstorms are common through the warm months, so RV renters should plan for the chance of heavy downpours and monitor river levels. Spring and fall are milder with variable conditions. Autumn brings strong color to the hardwood forests and river bluffs, and September is usually the driest month of the year in Cape Girardeau. The winter season is a quiet one, but it offers the best chance to spot bald eagles nesting along the Mississippi River. Come prepared for freezing temperatures and occasional snow or ice. At Trail Of Tears State Forest across the river, the forest's gravel roads are closed to vehicles from December 24 through the end of the spring wild turkey hunting season (generally the second week in May). All camping access is by foot only during that window.

The electric campground at Trail of Tears State Park is located near an active railroad track and the Mississippi River, offering beautiful views but occasional noise from passing trains and barges. Full hookup sites are narrow, but some have views of the Mississippi. A newer shower house, playground, and campground host presence are typical during peak season, and cell service varies by carrier, with Verizon users reporting two bars of LTE coverage. Trail Of Tears State Forest is more rustic. Camping with tents and small campers is allowed at designated sites. Large campers are discouraged due to the narrow gravel roads and limited access. No electrical or water connections are located at the camp sites, although privies, a grill and picnic table are provided. Roads in the forest are steep and gravel in places, so large rigs should take it slow. Private parks around Jackson, including Cape Camping and RV Park, The Landing Point RV Park, and Goatey Goat Ranch RV Park and Campground, cater more directly to RVs with hookups and easier access.
