Campgrounds and RV parks near Kahoka, MO

Battle of Athens State Historic Site is the anchor attraction: about a mile of Des Moines River frontage, a small lake for fishing and boating, the Mill Trail through the ruins of 19th-century Athens, and interpretive tours of preserved buildings including the Cannonball House. Rangers lead building tours during staffed hours, and the park hosts battle reenactments periodically. On the water, the Des Moines and nearby Mississippi River offer bank and boat fishing. Hickory Haven Campground keeps a pond on site for easy family fishing, and Indian Lake Park is another local fishing option. In town, Kahoka has grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, a city pool, and a local golf course, all within a couple of miles of Kahoka RV Park.

Spring runs cool through April before warming into May, with wildflowers on the hillsides at Battle of Athens and green returning to the woodlands. Rainfall picks up sharply from May into June, and river levels can run high, so check conditions before launching a boat. Summer is the peak camping window. Highs frequently reach the upper 80s and can top 90°F in July and August, and humidity stays high. Showers and potable water at Battle of Athens run April 15 through October 31, matching the practical on-season for public sites. Fall is the strongest shoulder season. Late September brings cooler nights, October delivers peak foliage along the Des Moines River, and crowds thin. Winter is cold with occasional snow and freezing temperatures. Battle of Athens stays open year-round for camping, but the showerhouse closes after October 31 and amenities are limited; private parks like Kahoka RV Park and Hickory Haven Campground operate year-round for self-contained rigs.

Expect small, rural campgrounds rather than resort-style properties. Kahoka RV Park offers gravel sites with full hookups and 30/50-amp service, laundry, showers, and is walkable to town amenities. Hickory Haven Campground offers level pull-through and back-in sites that accommodate larger rigs, plus tent sites. Battle of Athens is more rustic: basic and electric sites (both 30-amp and 50-amp), vault toilets, a table/fire-ring/lantern-post setup at each site, and a showerhouse located about a mile from the campground that is available April 15 through October 31. Cell signal is weak to nonexistent on the historic-site grounds. Roads into the state site are rural and can be rough. Firewood advisories apply, so buy local rather than hauling it in.
