Fishing is the headline activity. The Tongue River Reservoir has produced multiple Montana state-record fish, with walleye, crappie, smallmouth bass, and northern pike drawing anglers from both Montana and Wyoming. Boating, waterskiing, and swimming at the Sand Point beach area round out warm-weather use. History is the other main draw. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument is within easy driving range and pairs well with a stay at 7th Ranch RV Camp or Wagon Wheel Campground. The Big Horn Mountains rise to the south, offering higher-elevation hiking, scenic drives, and cooler summer temperatures accessible from a base at Sheridan / Big Horn Mountains KOA Journey or Lazy R Campground and RV Park. Wildlife viewing is casual and constant: deer, antelope, osprey, blue herons, and bald eagles are regularly spotted around the reservoir.

The peak camping season at Tongue River Reservoir State Park runs from the third Friday of May through the third Sunday of September, when the marina, water faucets, dump station, and boat rentals are all operating. Waterfront and electric sites fill quickly on summer weekends and holidays, particularly around Independence Day and the walleye spawn in spring. Spring can be wet and muddy, with May typically the wettest month across southeast Montana and the neighboring Sheridan area. Late-spring snowstorms are possible, and gravel access roads to some reservoir loops can be rough after heavy rain. June often brings the strongest thunderstorms and highest river flows. Winter shifts the reservoir into ice-fishing mode. Private parks near Sheridan generally stay open longer than the state park, though some reduce services from late fall through early spring.

Terrain around the reservoir is flat, open, and mostly treeless, which makes RV leveling easy but offers little shade or wind protection. Expect dust on gravel loops, strong afternoon winds off the prairie, and wide temperature swings between day and night. Cell coverage is spotty away from the main highways and can drop out entirely inside the reservoir canyons. Electric sites are available at Campers Point at Tongue River Reservoir State Park and at the private parks near Sheridan, but full hookups with sewer are more common at the private campgrounds. Vault toilets, potable water taps, and a dump station cover the state park during peak season; the KOA and Lazy R offer more traditional restroom and laundry facilities. Bring bug spray for mosquitoes near the water, secure trash from raccoons and skunks, and follow Montana AIS inspection rules if trailering a boat.
