Campgrounds and RV parks near Sundance, WY

Devils Tower National Monument is the headline stop. The paved 1.3-mile Tower Trail loops the base of the formation, and longer routes such as Joyner Ridge and Red Beds give wider prairie views. The monument is a major crack climbing destination, and ranger programs run at the visitor center during the warm season. The Belle Fourche River, which runs through the monument, supports light paddling and fishing. The surrounding Black Hills National Forest offers hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing in a forested setting on the Sundance Trail System, plus fishing and paddling at Cook Lake. In town, the Crook County Museum covers regional history including the Sundance Kid, who took his name from the local jail. Keyhole State Park, about 30 miles west, adds boating and reservoir swimming.

The practical RV season around Sundance runs roughly from mid-May through mid-October, matching the operating window for most private parks and the monument campground. Belle Fourche Campground is open for the season May 16 to October 14, with potable water, flush toilets, and trash service available only during that period. Off-season visits are possible, but services drop sharply and snow can close access on short notice. Late spring brings the wettest stretch of the year, with May the wettest month and April still capable of heavy snow. June through August deliver the warmest, driest stable weather and the largest crowds, particularly around the Fourth of July. September and early October typically offer cooler days, lighter traffic, and good visibility, with the first hard frosts arriving by mid- to late October. Winters are long and cold, with subzero overnight lows common and snowfall continuing into April. Wildlife is active throughout the warm months, and prairie dogs are a constant presence in the monument.

Sundance itself is a small town with a grocery, fuel, and a handful of restaurants clustered near the I-90 exits. RV travelers should top off fuel and groceries here rather than waiting until closer to the monument, where options are limited. Cell service is reliable in town and along the interstate but drops off in the Bear Lodge Mountains and inside parts of the monument. Roads are paved on the main approach to Devils Tower via Highway 14 and Highway 24, and most private campgrounds are accessible to larger rigs. Belle Fourche River Campground has room for RVs up to 35 feet and no hookups. An entrance fee or America the Beautiful pass is required to enter Devils Tower. Thunderstorms can develop quickly bringing lightning, hail, and rain, so afternoon climbs and ridge hikes are best started early.
