Custer State Park is the anchor attraction. The Wildlife Loop Road passes through open range where a bison herd, pronghorn, prairie dogs, and burros are commonly seen. The Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road are scenic drives with granite spires, tunnels, and framed views of Mount Rushmore. Crazy Horse Memorial sits a few miles north of downtown, Mount Rushmore National Memorial is roughly a 30-minute drive north, Jewel Cave National Monument offers guided tours of one of the longest caves in the world, and Wind Cave National Park protects another major cave system. Above ground, the 109-mile Mickelson Trail follows a historic Deadwood to Edgemont rail line and is used by hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, with 14 trailheads, more than 100 converted railroad bridges, and four rock tunnels. Sylvan Lake and Black Elk Peak offer swimming, paddling, and hiking.
