Campgrounds and RV parks near Albion, NE

Fishing drives most trips in this part of Nebraska. Calamus Reservoir is one of Nebraska's premier fishing lakes, known for walleye, white bass, wipers, northern pike, muskie, channel catfish, and crappie. The seven-acre lake at North Loup State Recreation Area holds bluegill, common carp, channel catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass, among other species. Boating and swimming are easy to work into a trip. Calamus Reservoir has boat ramps spread around the lake, an unsupervised sandy swim beach, and fish cleaning stations. The Calamus State Fish Hatchery operates within the recreation area and offers self-guided tours with educational displays on raising fish. Closer to Albion, Headworks Park has a sandy beach, canal-bank walks, and bird watching during spring and fall migrations. In town, families can use the Albion Family Aquatic Center and the Boone County Trails System.

The main camping season in this part of Nebraska runs from late spring through mid-fall. Loup Power District parks, including Headworks, are open to the public from May 1 to November 1, weather permitting. State-run sites at Calamus stay open year-round, but shower houses and other seasonal services scale back outside the warm months, and North Loup remains primitive with no potable water at any time. Summer brings peak use. Holiday weekends, the June white bass run at Calamus, and the July Boone County Fair in Albion all pull campers in, so state-park sites that can be booked in advance fill quickly. Spring and early fall are the quietest, with cool nights, migrating waterfowl and cranes across the Platte and Loup valleys, and good walleye and catfish fishing. Winter camping is limited. Most private parks scale back services, primitive-only areas like North Loup have no water year-round, and cold snaps, wind, and blowing snow can close roads with little warning.

Expect flat to gently rolling terrain, big skies, and long sight lines. Sites near Albion tend to be open with limited shade, while Calamus and the Loup-corridor parks have more mature trees. Calamus State Recreation Area sits in the Sandhills and includes a 5,123-acre lake and surrounding land covered with native grasses and forbs. Hookups vary widely. Calamus has 122 pads with 30/50 amp electrical hookups, plus 55 non-pad sites, modern restrooms, showers, a dump station, and water. Loup Power District parks have no dump stations or direct water hookups. A Nebraska park entry permit is required to visit state recreation areas and may be purchased at the park, at Game and Parks offices and permit vendors, or in advance online. Cell coverage is generally solid near Albion and thinner in the Sandhills west of Burwell.
