Campgrounds and RV parks near De Witt, NE

Fishing and boating anchor most trips. Bluestem State Recreation Area provides great fishing opportunities for largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, walleye and crappies, among others. All types of boating are allowed at Bluestem. The area also has four docks and three boat ramps. Swimming beaches operate at Bluestem and at Rockford State Recreation Area Swimming Beach, though there are no lifeguards on duty. History travelers can pair camping with a stop at the adjacent Rock Creek Station State Historical Park, where deep ruts, carved by the many wagons that traveled the Oregon and California trails remain plainly visible, and attractions include reconstructed historic buildings, living history demonstrations and a visitor center. Equestrian riders have access to six miles of trails at Rock Creek Station State Recreation Area and the adjacent historical park.

Late spring through early fall is the practical camping window. Water systems at the smaller parks are seasonal: water typically gets turned on around April 15, after the last freeze, and remains on until the first freeze (usually late October or early November), after which campers at Rock Creek Station must fill from a well pump. Swim beaches at Bluestem and Rockford draw the biggest crowds during the hot summer months, when reservoirs stay warm enough for extended lake use. Summer weekends fill fastest at parks with electric hookups. Reservations for camping are accepted up to 180 days in advance of arrival date, and reservations are available for half of the electrical campsites at Rock Creek Station, with the rest first-come, first-served. Arriving early on Friday is advised in June, July, and August. Spring brings thunderstorms and the highest rainfall of the year, which can leave grass sites soft. Fall cools quickly and delivers quieter camping, though facilities begin closing for the season. Winter camping is possible at some parks but primitive: expect frozen water and no showers.

Facilities vary widely across the five closest parks. Rock Creek Station is the most developed: all 25 electrical campsites have been upgraded to 50 amps, with a modern shower and restroom building for registered campers, drinking water, and a dump and fill station. Stagecoach offers electric pads and non-pad sites, so filling water before arrival is wise. Olive Creek and Bluestem are more primitive. Campers can enjoy amenities such as drinking water, primitive restrooms, and a dump and fill station at Bluestem, but tent campers should bring their own water supply. Cell service is generally usable but not guaranteed at every site. Terrain is gently rolling prairie with scattered shade, so full-sun awnings and bug spray are worth packing. Expect small campgrounds, quiet weeknights, and busier weekends when Lincoln and Omaha day-trippers arrive.
