Campgrounds and RV parks near Newman Grove, NE

Water recreation is the main draw. At Willow Creek, the main body of the lake is open to all boating and water skiing, while the wooded west end is restricted to no-wake boating, making it a good spot for kayakers. Anglers will find crappie, bluegill, bass, catfish, walleye, northern pike, and wipers, and seven rock jetties provide access from shore. On land, Willow Creek offers an 8-mile limestone hike/bike trail that loops the lake and connects toward the town of Pierce. Headworks Park adds canal-side walking, a sandy swim area, and adjacent ATV trails. Farther north and west, in Antelope County, Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park lets visitors watch ongoing excavations of prehistoric animals preserved under volcanic ash. Hunting is available in season on parts of Willow Creek, and archery ranges, playgrounds, and swimming beaches make the area workable for families with mixed interests.

The practical RV season in northeast Nebraska runs from spring through fall. Loup Power District parks, including Headworks Park and ATV Trails - Loup Power, are open to the public from May 1 to November 1, weather permitting. Private campgrounds along the Highway 81 corridor generally operate spring through late fall. Willow Creek State Recreation Area stays open year-round, but water and shower buildings are shut down outside the warm months. Late spring brings the heaviest rain and strong fishing, but also the most storm risk: severe thunderstorms and occasional tornadoes are common from May into July. Summer weekends fill fast at Willow Creek and Headworks, particularly around holidays. Seasonal algae blooms can trigger health advisories at Willow Creek and limit swimming and other water activity, so check current conditions before arrival. Early fall is often the sweet spot for RVers: cooler nights, thinner crowds, and active bird migration along the Loup River. Parts of Willow Creek open to hunting beginning the first Tuesday after Labor Day and closing April 1, so campers sharing the area with hunters should wear blaze orange on trails.

Expect a rural setting with limited services between towns. Willow Creek State Recreation Area has roughly 100 camping pads with electrical hookups, plus picnic tables, fire grates, drinking water, showers, modern restrooms, an archery field course, unsupervised swimming, two playgrounds, and an 8-mile hiking and horseback trail around the lake. A dump and fill station serves the campground, though some reviewers report periodic closures; the town of Pierce, about 5 miles away, also offers a dump option. Headworks Park and ATV Trails - Loup Power has no dump stations or direct water hookups, no lifeguards on duty, and all Loup facilities are alcohol free. Highway 81 RV Park is a plain highway stopover with pull-through, level spaces and full hookups, but expect road and rail noise. Cell coverage across the region is generally good on major carriers, though it thins on gravel county roads.
