Campgrounds and RV parks near Valentine, NE

The Niobrara River is the main attraction. Tubing, kayaking, and canoeing trips launch from outfitters in and around Valentine, with common takeouts at Smith Falls State Park and Rocky Ford. At more than 60 feet, these falls are the highest waterfall in Nebraska, reached by a footbridge and short trail from the campground. Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, just east of town, has a bison and elk auto tour, a prairie dog town, and river access. Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area, south of Valentine, is stocked for walleye, northern pike, and muskie, and its dark skies host an annual star party each summer. In town, the Cherry County Historical Museum, downtown shops, and steakhouses cover a rest day off the water.

The camping and paddling season centers on late spring through early fall. River outfitters and most private campgrounds along the Niobrara run from around Memorial Day through mid-September, with peak volume on weekends in July and August. Summer weekends book out weeks in advance, and shuttle capacity for float trips can sell through by midday. Spring brings variable weather, higher river flows from snowmelt and rain, and quieter campgrounds. Wildflowers on the Sandhills prairie peak in May and June. Fall offers cool nights, thinning crowds, and good fishing at Merritt Reservoir, though water temperatures drop quickly and many river outfitters wind down by late September. Winter is cold, windy, and largely off-season for camping. Reservations can be made online or by calling the Nebraska State Parks reservation call center at 1-844-637-2757, and those camping without reservations should visit the park office upon arrival to check availability and register to camp. Some private RV parks with hookups stay open year-round but reduce services.

Roads into the river corridor include gravel and sand sections. Travelers with large rigs or low-clearance tow vehicles should confirm access before arrival at riverfront properties. Cell service is spotty in the canyon and on the Sandhills back roads. Hookups vary by property. Private parks near Valentine typically offer electric and water, with some full-hookup sites, while the state park offers tent sites with picnic tables and fire rings, modern restrooms and pay showers are available, but there are no electrical hookups or RV camping facilities. Plan for dump station stops in town. Expect strong sun and wind on the open prairie, biting insects and ticks near the river in warm months, and the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Bring shade, layers, and a windbreak for the picnic table.
