Camping near Amherst, New Hampshire
Amherst sits in the Souhegan River valley in southern New Hampshire's Hillsborough County, roughly ten miles west of Nashua and under an hour from Boston. The town itself has no large public campground, so RV travelers typically base themselves at private parks in the surrounding towns of Brookline, New Boston, and Weare, all within about 30 minutes of Amherst village.
Closest to town, Field and Stream RV Park in Brookline offers 54 full-hookup sites with 20, 30, and 50 amp service and is an RV-only park (no tents), with paved interior sites and access to nearby Lake Potanipo. Friendly Beaver Campground in New Boston is a larger, family-oriented resort of about 120 sites on 100 wooded acres, with indoor and outdoor pools and heavy seasonal activity programming. Autumn Hills Campground in Weare sits on a wooded hillside adjacent to Daniels Lake and welcomes RVs, pop-ups, and tents. Cold Springs Camp Resort, also in Weare, and Pine Campgrounds round out the local options.
The area works well as a base for exploring Beaver Brook Association trails, the Souhegan River corridor, and day trips north to the Lakes Region or south to Boston.
Things to do near Amherst
The largest nearby draw is the Beaver Brook Association in neighboring Hollis and Brookline, a conservation area with a large network of trails open year-round to hikers, mountain bikers, cross-country skiers, and equestrians. Trails range from flat pond loops suitable for young kids to rockier ridge routes. Amherst's own trail network includes connections to Purgatory Falls and other local conservation land.
Water-based options include swimming, fishing, kayaking, and boating on Horace Lake and Daniels Lake in Weare, on Lake Potanipo in Brookline, and paddling on the Souhegan and Nashua Rivers.
Families with RVs often build in day trips to the Currier Museum in Manchester, the tax-free outlets in Merrimack, Canobie Lake Park in Salem, and, roughly an hour or two north, the White Mountains and Flume Gorge.

The main New Hampshire camping season runs from early May through mid-October. Most private parks in the Amherst area follow this pattern: Autumn Hills publishes a season running May 1 through mid-October, and Field and Stream RV Park operates roughly April through early November. Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Columbus Day) fill earliest and often carry two- or three-night minimums.
July and August bring the warmest weather, the busiest pool scenes, and peak family programming at the larger resorts. Late September and early October are the strongest window for fall foliage in southern New Hampshire, with cool nights and mild days; sites at this time of year should be booked well in advance.
Winter camping options are limited. Friendly Beaver Campground stays open year-round, with a heated indoor pool and access to snowmobile trails, while most other area parks close for the cold months. Snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are the main cold-season activities.

We had an amazing experience renting Tyler’s RV! We were blown away by how well kept, clean, and comfortable everything was. The RV had everything we could possibly need and then some! We didn’t have to bring anything. It was stocked with cups, plates, utensils, toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, rugs for inside and outside, cleaning supplies, and many other thoughtful extras that made our stay incredibly easy and stress free. He also offered a package with a grill and the honey pot if needed. There were chairs available for us to use, as well as firewood. There were also plenty of games inside, which was a fun bonus and made the experience even better! I added the additional linen package which just made everything so easy! Plenty of sheets, pillows, towels, wash cloths, beach towels! Tyler was easy to communicate with he was timely and responsive. He made dropping off and picking up extremely easy as well and was on time for everything. You can truly tell that Tyler takes great pride in his RV and wants his guests to have the best experience possible. Everything was thoughtfully prepared and made our trip so enjoyable. We couldn’t have asked for a better rental experience and would highly recommend Tyler and his RV to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and worry-free getaway. We will definitely be renting from Tyler again!

How to book
Campgrounds around Amherst are privately owned, so there is no single reservation portal. Each property runs its own online booking through its website: Field and Stream reserves through its Happy Grounds site, and Autumn Hills, Cold Springs, Friendly Beaver, and Pine Campgrounds each accept reservations directly. For summer weekends and any holiday, plan to reserve several weeks to several months in advance.
Cancellation policies vary but are generally strict. Autumn Hills, for instance, requires eight or more days' notice for a refund, less an administrative fee, and holiday bookings, specials, and one-night stays are non-refundable. Field and Stream applies a fee for cancellations inside 14 days and offers no refund after that point.
Seasonal sites, where a camper is left in place for the whole summer, typically require an application and can involve a waitlist.
What to expect
Sites in the Amherst area range from tight, resort-style rows at the larger family parks to more spread-out wooded loops at the smaller campgrounds. Most parks are big-rig friendly and offer full or partial hookups; Field and Stream has paved interior sites and does not accept tents, while Autumn Hills and Friendly Beaver welcome RVs, pop-ups, and tents and offer cabin or rental options.
Expect classic New England mixed hardwood and pine forest, rolling hills, and small ponds or brooks on many properties. Wi-Fi coverage is common but can be limited on individual sites, and cell service in the more rural pockets of New Boston and Weare can be spotty.
Biting insects, blackflies in late May and early June and mosquitoes through the summer, are a genuine planning factor. Bring repellent, and expect campfire rules to tighten during dry spells declared by state forest officials.
