Campgrounds near Marlborough, New Hampshire
Marlborough sits in the Monadnock Region of southwestern New Hampshire, a short drive from Keene and within easy reach of Mount Monadnock. The area is a compact base for RV travelers, with private lakeside campgrounds, riverfront sites, and a state park campground all clustered within a 30-minute radius. Rolling farmland and forest surround the region, and the towering Mount Monadnock anchors the landscape to the south.
Closest options for RV renters include Swanzey Lake Camping Area and Ashuelot River Campground, both a short drive west toward Keene. Swanzey Lake sits in the heart of the Monadnock Region with over 100 wooded sites near a clear lake, accommodates most RVs up to 35 feet, and offers rustic tent sites, water and electric sites, and full four-way hookup sites. Ashuelot River Campground sits along the Ashuelot River in Swanzey with 22 acres of land and 3,600 feet of riverfront.
Further out, Monadnock State Park offers hike-in and drive-in sites at the base of the mountain, while Shir-Roy Camping Area in Richmond and Forest Lake Campgrounds in Winchester round out the pond-and-lake options to the south.
Things to do near Marlborough
Hiking Mount Monadnock is the main draw. The park sits around the 3,165-foot summit, and the steep, rugged summit hike runs about 4 miles and 4 hours round trip, with all routes including very steep and rocky sections.
Water activities are close at hand. Swanzey Lake offers swimming, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and rowing, along with a playground, basketball hoops, horseshoe pits, and grills. Ashuelot River Campground has canoe, kayak, and bike rentals, a game room, hot showers, and a camp store. Shir-Roy sits on Cass Pond, with a sandy beach for swimming, fishing, and boating, plus pedalboat, kayak, canoe, and rowboat rentals.
Biking the Ashuelot Rail Trail and exploring downtown Keene for shopping and food are common day-trip additions.

Most private campgrounds in the area follow a summer season roughly from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. Shir-Roy operates from late May through mid-October. Ashuelot River Campground is open seasonally from May through October. Swanzey Lake Camping Area typically runs from spring through early November.
Monadnock State Park runs on a different schedule. The Monadnock HQ campground is open year-round, though amenities are limited after Labor Day and there is no snowplowing, so campers pack in their gear. Gilson Pond is closed for winter. Summer weekends and fall foliage weeks fill first; midweek stays in June and September are the easiest to book.
Winter travel is possible but limited. Roads stay open and Mount Monadnock sees winter hikers, but hookups, showers, and camp stores are largely shut down at private parks between late October and May. RV renters planning shoulder-season trips should confirm water and dump-station availability directly with the campground before arrival.
How to book campsites near Marlborough
Private campgrounds in this area take reservations directly. Swanzey Lake, Ashuelot River, Shir-Roy, and Forest Lake all book through their own websites or by phone. Popular summer weekends, especially around Independence Day and Labor Day, should be booked several months in advance.
Monadnock State Park uses the New Hampshire State Parks reservation system. The maximum reservation window is 11 months in advance, and sites become available at 8am on weekdays and 9am on weekends exactly 11 months from the anticipated arrival day. Of the 28 campsites at Monadnock HQ, 10 are for reservations, 7 are for youth groups, and the remaining 11 are first-come, first-served.
Out-of-state firewood is not allowed because it can carry exotic insects and tree diseases; safe firewood is available to purchase at the campground.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this area lean wooded and shaded, with a mix of full-hookup, water-and-electric, and rustic tent options. Swanzey Lake features roughly 100 wooded full or partial hookup campsites, big-rig friendly for RVs up to 35 feet in length. Ashuelot River offers 30- and 50-amp full-service RV sites and rustic tent sites. RV renters with larger rigs should confirm site length and turning access when booking, since some roads use covered bridges with low clearance and weight limits.
Expect basic amenities: hot showers, laundry, dump stations, and small camp stores are standard at the private parks. Cell coverage is uneven; Wi-Fi is offered at several parks but speeds vary.
Pets are not allowed at Monadnock State Park. Most private campgrounds in the area do allow pets in designated areas, but confirm the pet policy at booking.

On RVezy, travel trailers typically run $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300, and luxury Class A rigs sit between $250 and $450. Weekly bookings often unlock host discounts, and shoulder-season trips in May or late September can shave 20 to 30 percent off summer rates. Pro tip: midweek pickups (Sunday through Thursday) tend to be noticeably cheaper than Friday departures heading into the Mount Monadnock hiking weekends.
visitnh.gov/seasonal-trips/summer/outdoors/campingWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Marlborough, New Hampshire?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Marlborough. New Hampshire does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally. On RVezy, approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid driver's license, verified through the platform when you book. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before flying in. Most first-time renters in the Monadnock Region are surprised how simple the paperwork really is, leaving more time for the scenic drive up Route 124.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my RVezy rental in Marlborough?
You are covered from the moment you hit the road. Every RV rental in Marlborough, NH includes an RVezy renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on Route 101 or a dead battery at a Keene trailhead is just a phone call away. The protection plan covers most damage to the RV, giving you peace of mind without arranging a separate insurance broker. During checkout you choose between coverage tiers based on the deductible level you are comfortable with. For most renters heading into the Monadnock highlands, the included protection and roadside support provide the financial safety net needed to relax and enjoy the trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Marlborough RV rental?
Booking is genuinely low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so you can lock in your rig for a Mount Monadnock weekend with confidence. Refund eligibility after that grace period depends on how far out your trip is and whether a major event disrupts your plans. If life happens, our support team works with you to find solutions, including rebooking. The full, current policy lives on the RVezy Help Center, and customer support is available before, during, and after your trip if anything changes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I find a pet-friendly RV rental in Marlborough, NH?
Absolutely, your dog can ride shotgun. Plenty of RVezy hosts offer pet-friendly RV rentals in Marlborough, NH; just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you'll see rigs that welcome four-legged travelers. One important local note: pets are not permitted anywhere inside Monadnock State Park, including the trails on Mount Monadnock itself. The good news is Pisgah State Park (about 20 minutes west) and Rhododendron State Park in Fitzwilliam both welcome leashed dogs on miles of forested trails. Greenfield State Park's campground also allows pets in designated loops. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee (usually $25 to $75 per trip) and to ask about their cleaning expectations.
nhstateparks.org/planning/pet-friendly-state-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Marlborough?
Yes, and it's one of the smartest ways to do this trip. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Marlborough and across the Monadnock Region, meaning they'll tow or drive the rig to your campsite at places like Gilson Pond Campground in Jaffrey, Greenfield State Park, or Swanzey Lake Camping Area, level it, hook up utilities, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile from the host's home base, with some hosts offering free delivery within 25 miles. This is ideal if you're flying into Manchester-Boston Regional Airport or if it's your first time renting an RV and you'd rather skip the highway driving altogether.
visitnh.gov/things-to-do/outdoor-recreation/campingHow many miles do I get with my Marlborough RV rental?
You have flexibility either way. Some Marlborough RVezy hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, while others include a daily allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day) with a small per-mile fee beyond that. Each listing displays its mileage policy clearly before you book, so there are no surprises. For reference, a classic Monadnock Region loop, Marlborough to Keene to Peterborough to Jaffrey and back, runs about 50 miles total, well within any package. Planning a bigger New Hampshire RV trip up to the White Mountains or over to the Maine coast? Filter for unlimited-mileage rigs to keep things stress-free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Marlborough%2C%20New%20HampshireWhat are the best campgrounds near Marlborough, NH?
You've got fantastic options within a short drive. The best campgrounds near Marlborough, NH include: Monadnock State Park Gilson Pond Campground in Jaffrey (about 20 minutes east, 35 sites tucked beneath Mount Monadnock); Swanzey Lake Camping Area in West Swanzey (10 minutes south, full hookups and a sandy beach); Greenfield State Park Campground (45 minutes northeast, with a swimming pond and 252 wooded sites); Forest Lake Campground in Winchester (25 minutes south, family-friendly with pull-throughs); and Otter Brook Lake (a US Army Corps of Engineers day-use area great for paddling). Pro tip: Gilson Pond books out 11 months ahead for fall foliage weekends, so reserve early through New Hampshire State Parks' ReserveAmerica portal.
nhstateparks.org/visit/campgroundsWhen is the best time to visit Marlborough, NH in an RV?
Late September through mid-October is the magic window, and locals will tell you the same. Fall foliage around Mount Monadnock peaks roughly October 5 to 15, painting the Monadnock Region in fiery reds, oranges, and gold. Summer (June through August) brings warm days of 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and cool nights perfect for campfires, ideal for swimming at Otter Brook or Spofford Lake. Spring (May) is quieter and greener but expect mud season ruts on backcountry roads. Winter RV camping is possible at year-round campgrounds, with January lows dipping to 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit, an adventure for cold-weather pros. Pro tip: book foliage week by mid-summer; it's the busiest stretch of the year.
weather.gov/box/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Marlborough?
You're in one of the friendliest regions in the country to learn. Marlborough sits on quiet Route 101 with low traffic outside of Keene, gentle terrain, and short, manageable drives to every major attraction, perfect if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving tips, leveling, the propane system, slide-outs, and dumping procedures before you ever turn the key. They're also a phone call away during your trip. If highway driving worries you, request delivery to your campground so the host handles the wheel. Pro tip: practice a few right-hand turns in the Marlborough Elementary School lot (when school's out) before heading to Mount Monadnock.
dmv.nh.gov/driver-education-and-trainingWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Help is always one call away. Every RVezy booking in Marlborough includes 24/7 roadside assistance, covering tows, jump-starts, tire changes, lockouts, and fuel delivery anywhere in the U.S. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for quick questions like how to reset the inverter or where the fuse box is. If a system fails mid-trip, RVezy customer support steps in to coordinate repairs or alternate solutions. The nearest service hubs are in Keene (about 10 minutes west) and Peterborough (about 20 minutes east), both with auto shops, propane refills, and stores stocked with hose, sewer, and electrical adapters.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat are popular road trip destinations from Marlborough, NH?
You're perfectly positioned for a classic New England RV road trip from Marlborough. Top routes include: Mount Monadnock and Jaffrey (20 minutes, iconic hike with summit views into five states); the White Mountains and Franconia Notch (2 hours 15 minutes north, home to the famous Kancamagus Highway); Portsmouth and the New Hampshire seacoast (2 hours east, fresh lobster and historic harbor); Burlington, Vermont and Lake Champlain (3 hours northwest via scenic Route 9); and Acadia National Park in Maine (5 hours northeast for a long-weekend adventure). Cross-border into Canada is possible with some hosts (just message them first), but travel into Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: take Route 9 west through Brattleboro for the prettiest leg of any Vermont-bound trip.
visitnh.gov/seasonal-tripsHow much should I budget for fuel on a Marlborough RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item, but it's manageable with planning. Expect 8 to 10 miles per gallon for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 mpg for Class C, 14 to 18 mpg for campervans, and 12 to 16 mpg for trucks towing travel trailers. New Hampshire gas prices typically sit just below the national average (often $3.00 to $3.40 per gallon recently), and you'll find cheaper diesel at the Irving station on Route 101 in Marlborough and the Cumberland Farms in Keene. A 250-mile weekend loop in a Class C runs roughly $70 to $90 in fuel. Pro tip: New Hampshire has no sales tax, so stock groceries here before crossing into Vermont or Massachusetts.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Marlborough?
Earlier is better, but you have options. For New Hampshire state park campgrounds like Monadnock State Park's Gilson Pond and Greenfield State Park, reservations open exactly 11 months ahead at 8 a.m. (9 a.m. on weekends) through the official ReserveAmerica portal, and fall foliage weekends genuinely sell out within hours. Private campgrounds like Swanzey Lake or Forest Lake usually have summer weekend availability 1 to 3 months out. Midweek trips (Sunday to Thursday) often have same-week openings, even in peak season. Pro tip: if your top choice is booked, set a free ReserveAmerica notification alert for cancellations, then layer that with checking the RVezy delivery filter so you can pivot to a different campground without losing your rig.
nhstateparks.org/visit/campingWhat are driving conditions like in and around Marlborough?
Driving in the Monadnock Region is refreshingly mellow compared to Boston or Manchester. Route 101 through Marlborough is a well-maintained two-lane highway with gentle hills and wide shoulders, perfect for RV camping in Marlborough first-timers. You'll want to watch for: occasional moose and deer at dawn and dusk (especially on Route 12 north), tight historic downtown corners in Keene's Central Square, and steep grades on Route 124 climbing toward Jaffrey. Winter brings snow from December through March; if you're traveling then, confirm the RV has proper tires. Local insider tip: avoid the I-91 detour through Brattleboro during Vermont leaf-peeping weekends; take Route 12 south or Route 9 west instead for far less stop-and-go traffic.
nh.gov/dot/programs/winter/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Marlborough?
Most Monadnock-area campgrounds offer plenty for a comfortable trip. Private parks like Swanzey Lake Camping Area and Forest Lake Campground feature full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), hot showers, laundry, dump stations, and Wi-Fi at the office. New Hampshire state park campgrounds, including Gilson Pond at Monadnock, are more rustic: no hookups, but they offer flush toilets, hot showers, potable water spigots, and on-site firewood (out-of-state wood is prohibited to protect against invasive insects). The closest public dump station is at Greenfield State Park, and Rymes in Keene handles propane refills. Pro tip: top off fresh water in Marlborough before heading to dry-camp at Gilson Pond, where there's no on-site dump.
nhstateparks.org/visit/campgroundsWhat's included inside a typical Marlborough RV rental?
You'll roll out fully equipped for a true Marlborough RV trip. Most RVezy rigs come with a queen or king bed, bunks or convertible dinettes for kids, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink), an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with air conditioning and propane furnace, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Many motorhome rentals in Marlborough also include an onboard generator (handy for boondocking near Mount Monadnock where hookups don't exist), a flat-screen TV, and Bluetooth stereo. Wi-Fi varies; cell signal is spotty in the deep woods around Pisgah State Park, so don't count on streaming. Pro tip: filter by "sleeps 6" or higher if you're planning a family RV trip to Marlborough with kids and gear.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulationsCan I add extras like camp chairs, bikes, or kitchenware to my rental?
Yes, and add-ons make life easier. Most RVezy hosts in Marlborough offer optional extras such as camp chairs, outdoor mats, bike racks, kayaks, generators, propane refills, linen and bedding packages, and fully stocked kitchen kits, usually $10 to $50 each per trip. You'll see them listed right on the booking page. Pickup and dropoff times are typically 1 to 3 p.m. and 9 to 11 a.m., though many hosts flex around your schedule if you message them. Mileage policies are displayed clearly on each listing, ranging from 100 free miles per day to unlimited. Pro tip: ask for the bike add-on. The Cheshire Rail Trail runs right through Marlborough and is one of the best easy rides in southwest New Hampshire.
nh.gov/osi/resource-library/trails/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
The payment process is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in New Hampshire, RVezy charges your credit card for the rental total, protection plan, and any selected add-ons upfront through the platform; you never hand cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, separate from the booking payment, and is not charged unless there is damage, missing equipment, or a major cleaning issue at return. Once the host confirms everything is in order after your trip, the hold is released. Pro tip: take timestamped photos and a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff, it protects everyone and keeps the deposit return smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs winter RV camping really possible around Marlborough?
It can be magical if you are prepared. Monadnock State Park's main campground area at the park headquarters is one of the few year-round options in southern New Hampshire, though hookups are limited and winter access is rustic, so pack-in gear is the norm. For full-hookup winter camping, look 30 to 45 minutes south into Massachusetts. If you want a heated RV rental in Marlborough, NH for a snowshoe weekend on Mount Monadnock, filter on RVezy for four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a propane furnace, then message the host to confirm winterization. Temperatures from December to February typically range from about 10 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Pro tip: travel with two full propane tanks; furnaces use it quickly below 20 degrees.
