Campgrounds near Troy, New Hampshire
Troy sits in southwestern New Hampshire's Monadnock Region, minutes from the base of Mount Monadnock and within a short drive of the Ashuelot River corridor. The area combines a working state park system with long-running private family campgrounds, so RV travelers can choose between hike-in access to the mountain and full-hookup sites on nearby ponds.
Monadnock State Park operates the closest public camping, with the Gilson Pond Campground located just down the road from the park headquarters area in Jaffrey. Private options include Shir-Roy Camping Area in Richmond, Swanzey Lake Camping Area, Ashuelot River Campground, and Woodmore Family Campground and RV Park, all within roughly a half-hour drive of Troy.
The surrounding landscape is rolling farmland and hardwood forest broken by ponds, brooks, and low granite peaks. Keene, the regional hub, is about fifteen minutes west and supplies groceries, propane, hospitals, and repair services for renters basing an RV trip in the area.
Things to do near Troy
Hiking Mount Monadnock is the marquee activity. Mount Monadnock stands 3,165 feet and was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1987. Trails to the summit leave from the park headquarters and from the Gilson Pond area, and the mountain also offers shorter hikes for families not attempting the top. Monadnock State Park is a carry-in, carry-out site, and pets are not allowed in the park or on the mountain.
On the water, Shir-Roy Camping Area sits on a 42-acre pond with a 200-foot sandy beach, and anglers can find largemouth bass, perch, pickerel, or hornpout. The park also rents paddle boats, kayaks, and canoes. Swanzey Lake Camping Area and Ashuelot River Campground add more paddling and swimming options.
Off-site day trips include the covered bridges around Swanzey and the shops and restaurants of Keene and Peterborough.

The private campgrounds around Troy run a classic New England season. Shir-Roy Camping Area operates from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend, and other family parks in the region follow a similar window. Booking well ahead is standard for July, August, and fall-foliage weekends.
Monadnock State Park's Gilson Pond Campground opened as the first new campground in the NH State Park System in over 40 years, with 35 campsites for tents and pop-ups plus 5 remote hike-to sites, along with a bathhouse with showers and a playground. Monadnock Base Headquarters has sites open during the off season for walk-in camping from November to May.
Leaf-peeping peaks from late September into mid-October and drives weekend demand higher than summer. Winter brings cold temperatures and regular snow; the HQ campground road is closed in winter, and campers must park in the main hiking parking area and hike their gear to their site about a quarter mile.
How to book campsites near Troy
State park sites at Monadnock are reserved through the New Hampshire State Parks ReserveAmerica system. Reservations can be made for today and up to 11 months in advance. At Monadnock HQ, youth group reservations are made through the call center only, while family camping reservations can be made online or via the call center; Gilson Pond is all family camping, with reservations online or through the call center.
A cancellation policy in effect since February 2024 offers a full refund minus transaction fee if cancelled at least 10 days prior to arrival, a partial refund 4-9 days prior, and no refund 0-3 days from arrival.
Private parks such as Shir-Roy, Swanzey Lake, Ashuelot River, and Woodmore Family Campground and RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and holiday weekends often fill months out.
What to expect on arrival
Sites in this area range from wooded tent-and-pop-up spots at the state park to full-hookup, big-rig-friendly pads at the private parks. Gilson Pond amenities include a bathhouse with showers, a playground, fire rings, drinking water, flush and vault toilets, and a camp store offering firewood and camping essentials. RV renters relying on shore power should confirm the site type at booking, as hookups are limited.
At Monadnock HQ, camping is available year-round but there is no snowplowing, so all campers pack in their gear, and there are no hookup sites at this campground. Pets are not permitted anywhere in Monadnock State Park, while Shir-Roy allows pets and has a dump station.
Cell service at the state park is limited and varies by provider, though reception is generally reliable near Keene. Bring layers year-round; nights cool off quickly even in July.

Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the protection package, so message the host before booking if you're dreaming of Montreal or Quebec City (about 250 miles north). cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-go/your-tripHow much should I budget for fuel on a Troy RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to plan for. New Hampshire typically has some of the lowest gas prices in New England, and there's no state sales tax, which helps your overall trip budget. Expect a Class C motorhome to average about 8 to 12 MPG, a Class B campervan 14 to 20 MPG, and a travel trailer combo 10 to 14 MPG depending on your tow vehicle. For a typical 200-mile weekend loop from Troy to Mount Monadnock, Keene, and Swanzey Lake, budget roughly $60 to $110 in gas. Pro tip: fill up in Keene or Jaffrey before heading north, prices climb noticeably once you reach the White Mountains and tourist corridors.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Troy?
Book early and you'll have your pick, especially for the Monadnock region's busiest weekends. New Hampshire State Parks open campsite reservations exactly 11 months in advance at 8 a.m. weekdays (9 a.m. weekends) through the ReserveAmerica system, and Gilson Pond at Monadnock State Park fills fast for July, August, and fall foliage weekends. Private parks like Woodmore, Ashuelot River, and Shir-Roy generally take reservations directly on their websites or by phone, with three to four months out being safe for summer. Pro tip: if you miss the 11-month window for Columbus Day weekend, set a calendar reminder, cancellations pop up regularly, and Gilson Pond's small size (40 sites) means even one opening is a win.
newhampshirestateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/monadnock-hq/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NH&parkId=271000What are driving conditions like around Troy and the Monadnock region?

You'll mostly travel scenic two-lane roads, Route 12 connects Troy directly to Keene (8 miles north) and Winchendon, MA to the south, while Route 124 winds east toward Jaffrey and Mount Monadnock. Expect gentle hills, a few tight village centers (slow through Fitzwilliam and Marlborough), and the occasional moose or deer at dusk, so avoid night driving when possible. Snow tires or chains are essential if you're winter camping. Watch for low covered bridges on side roads, stick to numbered state routes in anything over 11 feet tall. Local insider tip: the Route 101 corridor between Keene and Peterborough has the smoothest pavement for big rigs.

Most listings include linens, cookware, and outdoor chairs. Many campervan rental Troy options add solar panels and lithium batteries for off-grid camping. TVs, Wi-Fi hotspots, onboard generators, and outdoor speakers are common add-ons, just check the listing's amenities. Payment is simple and secure on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host in cash. At booking, you'll see the nightly rate, service fee, your chosen protection plan, and any add-ons clearly itemized. A refundable security deposit is held (pre-authorized, not charged) on your card before pickup, with the amount shown on the listing, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV. After your trip, assuming no damage beyond normal wear, the hold is released. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos and a quick video of the RV inside and out at both pickup and drop-off, and refill propane and fuel as agreed.
