Camping near Walpole, New Hampshire
Walpole sits on the Connecticut River in western New Hampshire, directly across from Bellows Falls, Vermont. The area works well as an RV base because campgrounds cluster on both sides of the river within a short drive, and Interstate 91 runs parallel to the Connecticut for easy access from the north or south.
The closest full-service options for RV renters are just over the Vermont line. Brattleboro North KOA Journey in East Dummerston is roughly 20 minutes south along I-91 and caters to travelers with pull-through sites, cabins, tent areas, and a seasonal pool. Kampfires - Campground, Inn and Entertainment and Kenolie Village Campground in Newfane offer more community-oriented family camping, while Tree Farm Campground provides wooded sites further north in Vermont.
On the New Hampshire side, Ashuelot River Campground in West Swanzey sits along the Ashuelot River within the Monadnock Region, about 30 minutes east of Walpole. It accommodates big rigs with full hookups and connects directly to the Ashuelot Rail Trail toward Keene.
Things to do around Walpole
The Connecticut River anchors most trip planning. Paddlers use the Connecticut River Paddlers' Trail, a long-distance route with primitive campsites and access points running through Walpole, Westmoreland, and neighboring towns. The Ashuelot River adds tubing, kayaking, and trout fishing east of town, and the Ashuelot Rail Trail links Swanzey to Keene for family biking.
Hiking is the other main draw. Mount Monadnock, one of the most-climbed peaks in the world, is under an hour east. Pillsbury State Park to the north offers a rustic trail network and forms part of the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway. Historic downtown Walpole, Bellows Falls, and Brattleboro give families rainy-day options for shops, bakeries, and covered bridges nearby.

Most private campgrounds and state park campgrounds in the region operate seasonally, roughly May through mid-October, with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Ashuelot River Campground publishes an early-May to mid-October season, and Kenolie Village Campground in Newfane runs from mid-April through late October. Brattleboro North KOA Journey typically opens earlier and closes later than most neighbors, which helps shoulder-season travelers.
Spring brings mud, blackflies, and high water on the Connecticut and Ashuelot Rivers, so paddling conditions vary week to week. Summer is warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms possible; weekends and holidays fill quickly, especially riverside sites. Fall foliage typically peaks in early to mid-October and drives strong weekend demand across southern Vermont and western New Hampshire, so reservations should be locked in months ahead.
Winter camping is limited. Private parks close, and only a small number of primitive options remain accessible for self-contained rigs.
How to book near Walpole
Private campgrounds near Walpole handle their own reservations. Brattleboro North KOA Journey books through the KOA website or app, with KOA Rewards discounts at checkout. Ashuelot River Campground, Kenolie Village Campground, Kampfires - Campground, Inn and Entertainment, and Tree Farm Campground each take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and popular riverside and full-hookup sites tend to sell out early for holiday weekends.
For New Hampshire state park campgrounds such as Pillsbury State Park, reservations go through ReserveAmerica or by calling 1-877-647-2757. The booking window opens up to 11 months in advance, and cancellation fees apply on changes made through ReserveAmerica.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this region range from open, big-rig-friendly full-hookup pads to wooded riverside spots with only water and electric. Ashuelot River Campground offers riverside and open field sites with 30 and 50 amp service, full hookups on many sites, hot showers, laundry, and a game room. Brattleboro North KOA Journey adds back-in RV sites, cabins, tent pads, a pool, playgrounds, and a dog park.
Cell coverage is inconsistent once trips leave the I-91 corridor, and Pillsbury State Park is essentially primitive with limited services and spotty cell reception. Bring firewood only from local sources, since New Hampshire and Vermont restrict out-of-state firewood to slow pest spread.
