The camping season in this part of New Hampshire is short. Ashuelot River Campground operates from May 1 through mid-October, and Swanzey Lake Camping Area typically opens in mid-April and closes around November 1. Forest Lake Campgrounds runs a full summer season, with weekend activities scheduled from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Outside those windows, most private campgrounds near West Swanzey are closed and water systems are drained.
July and August are peak season, with the warmest river and lake temperatures and the fullest activity calendars. Memorial Day through Labor Day is when weekend programming runs at campgrounds like Forest Lake. Weekends in July and August fill early, and holiday weeks should be booked well in advance.
September and early October bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and fall color across the Monadnock Region. Bug pressure drops after Labor Day. Late October through April is off-season: cold, often snowy, and not suited to typical RV travel in the area.
How to book campgrounds near West Swanzey
Campgrounds around West Swanzey are privately owned, and each takes reservations directly rather than through a central state or federal system. Ashuelot River Campground accepts reservation requests through its website and by phone. Swanzey Lake Camping Area and Shir-Roy Camping Area book by phone through their offices. Forest Lake Campgrounds requires phone reservations with payment by cash or check.
Book holiday weekends and July or August stays several weeks to months ahead, since many sites in this cluster are held by seasonal renters and short-term inventory is limited. Confirm rig length before booking: Swanzey Lake Camping Area accommodates most RVs up to about 35 feet. Ask about covered-bridge routing when driving to Ashuelot River Campground, since a nearby covered bridge has low clearance and weight limits, and the operator publishes a driving route that avoids it.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of shaded, wooded sites and open field sites. Most parks in the area include 30 and 50 amp service, water, and a dump station, and several offer full hookups. Ashuelot River Campground is described as big-rig friendly with pull-through sites, laundry, a game room, and free Wi-Fi. Cell coverage is usable but not strong at every site.
Many of these campgrounds have a high share of seasonal sites, so short-term guests move through a smaller pool of transient sites, especially at Forest Lake Campgrounds, where roughly 25 sites serve short-term campers. Bathhouses at Swanzey Lake Camping Area have been recently upgraded. Mosquitoes and other bugs are common near the river and ponds in early summer.
Directions matter. GPS routes toward Ashuelot River Campground can send tall rigs or trailers over a covered bridge that they cannot clear, so follow the campground's written directions instead.

visitnh.gov/What are the best campgrounds near West Swanzey, NH?

Ashuelot River Campground offers riverfront sites with full hookups (follow their directions to avoid low-clearance covered bridges). Forest Lake Campground and Shir-Roy Camping Area in nearby Richmond are great family picks, and for a state park feel, Monadnock State Park's Gilson Pond Campground in Jaffrey is hard to beat. Pisgah State Park nearby is day-use only. Each makes a perfect base for RV camping West Swanzey adventures.
nhstateparks.org/visit/state-parks/monadnock-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from West Swanzey?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for a West Swanzey RV trip. Summers (June to August) average highs in the upper 70s to low 80s F with lush forests and warm lake swimming at Spofford Lake and Swanzey Lake. The crown jewel is late September through the second week of October, when the Monadnock Region hits peak fall foliage and daytime temps sit in the comfortable 55-65 F range. Spring (April to May) is quieter and cheaper but expect mud-season trails. If you want to avoid crowds, target the first two weeks of June or the week after Columbus Day for golden light and open campsites.
weather.gov/box/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in West Swanzey?
You will do great, and West Swanzey is a forgiving place for first time renting an RV. Roads like Route 10, Route 12, and Route 32 are well-maintained, and traffic is light compared to Boston. Your RVezy host will give you a full pickup walkthrough covering driving, leveling, hookups, the awning, and the bathroom, plus they are a text message away if you have questions on the road. For maximum confidence, choose delivery so the RV is already set up at your campsite. One local tip: avoid the historic covered bridges (Carleton, Sawyer's Crossing, Slate, and Thompson) since they have low clearance and weight limits.
dot.nh.gov/What if I have a breakdown or flat tire during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 9 heading to Brattleboro or a dead battery at Pisgah State Park is one phone call away from being solved. You will also have your host's direct number for quick advice on RV-specific quirks like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater. Save both contacts in your phone before you leave the driveway. Cell coverage in the Monadnock area is solid along the main routes but can dip in the deeper forests, so screenshot directions before you head into Pisgah's backcountry.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my West Swanzey RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from West Swanzey across New England is one of the best parts of renting here. You are free to cross into Vermont (Brattleboro is just 20 minutes west), Massachusetts, Maine, and beyond, all standard with most listings. Cross-border trips into Canada (Quebec City or Montreal, about 4-5 hours north) may be allowed depending on the host and their insurance, so message them directly from the listing page before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance limitations. Popular loops from West Swanzey include the White Mountains, the Maine coast, and Lake Champlain.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a West Swanzey RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it is easy to budget. Travel trailers do not burn extra fuel beyond what your tow vehicle uses; Class B campervans average 18-22 MPG; Class C motorhomes get 8-12 MPG; and Class A rigs run 6-10 MPG. Regular gas in the Keene/Swanzey area typically sits near the New Hampshire state average, and NH has relatively low fuel taxes compared to neighboring states. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop through the White Mountains in a Class C, plan on roughly $150-$200 in gas. Fill up in Swanzey or Keene before heading into the mountains where prices climb.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near West Swanzey?
For peak summer weekends (July 4th, Labor Day) and peak foliage weekends in early October, book your campground 3-6 months out, because Swanzey Lake Camping Area and Ashuelot River Campground fill up fast. New Hampshire State Park campgrounds like Monadnock's Gilson Pond and nearby Greenfield State Park accept reservations through the NH State Parks system up to 11 months ahead. Midweek summer stays and shoulder-season trips (mid-May, late September) often have availability just 1-2 weeks out. Pro tip: if you cannot get into Swanzey Lake, try Forest Lake in Winchester or a Vermont State Park just over the line, often within 30 minutes.
nhstateparks.org/reservationsWhat are the driving conditions like around West Swanzey?
Driving conditions around West Swanzey are RV-friendly. Route 10, Route 12, and NH Route 9 (the main east-west corridor to Keene and Brattleboro) are well-paved with gentle hills. The biggest local quirk is the historic covered bridges in Swanzey (Carleton, Sawyer's Crossing, Slate, and Thompson), which have low clearance and weight limits, so always route around them in any RV bigger than a van (RV-specific GPS apps will do this automatically). Winter brings ice and snow from mid-November through March, so most renters stick to May-October. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly; pull over and wait them out rather than driving a tall RV in strong gusts.
dot.nh.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near West Swanzey?
Most private campgrounds near West Swanzey, like Swanzey Lake Camping Area, Ashuelot River Campground, and Forest Lake Campground, offer full hookups (water, electric 30/50 amp, sewer), hot showers, laundry, dump stations, Wi-Fi (variable in the woods), and camp stores. State park campgrounds like Monadnock's Gilson Pond and Greenfield tend to be more rustic, with water spigots and flush or vault toilets but limited or no electric hookups. For dumping or filling fresh water on the road, Swanzey Lake Camping Area and Ashuelot River Campground both have dump stations available to registered guests. Cell signal is generally strong along Route 10 but spottier deeper into Pisgah State Park.
nhstateparks.org/visit/state-parksWhat features come with a typical RV rental in West Swanzey?

Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunks (great for kids), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, a furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, outdoor speakers, awning, leveling blocks, a fresh-linen package, and a generator for off-grid stays. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss; most renters use their phone hotspot. Each listing's amenity list spells out exactly what is included, and hosts often offer add-ons like camp chairs, bikes, kayaks, and bedding bundles for a small fee.

Mileage policies vary; many hosts include 100 free miles per day with extra miles around $0.35-$0.45, while others offer unlimited-mileage packages for a flat upgrade fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Swanzey%2C%20New%20HampshireHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure: you pay through RVezy at the time of booking using a credit card, which covers the rental, protection plan, and any add-ons you chose, no cash changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit (typically $500-$1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit hiccups, do a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff, return with the same fuel and propane level, dump the tanks if your host requires it, and message your host through the RVezy app if anything comes up during your trip.
