Camping near Artesia, New Mexico
Artesia sits in the Pecos River valley of southeastern New Mexico at roughly 3,380 feet of elevation, on the US-285 corridor between Roswell and Carlsbad. The town works well as an RV base for travelers heading to Carlsbad Caverns National Park, which preserves the largest chambered cavern in North America beneath the Chihuahuan Desert, and for anyone touring the wider Guadalupe Mountains region.
In town, Artesia RV Park and Storage and West Main RV Park offer straightforward overnight and extended stays close to fuel, groceries, and restaurants along Main Street. The Ranch RV Park serves longer-stay travelers looking for a quieter setting on the outskirts.
For visitors willing to drive south, Carlsbad KOA Holiday and Brantley Lake State Park put campers closer to the national park entrance. Carlsbad KOA Holiday sits 13 miles north of Carlsbad on US Hwy 285, making it a convenient midpoint between Artesia and the caverns, while Brantley Lake State Park lies twelve miles north of Carlsbad and offers boating, fishing, hiking trails, and developed and primitive campsites with restrooms and showers.
Things to do near Artesia
The main regional draw is Carlsbad Caverns National Park, about an hour south of Artesia. Self-guided routes through the Natural Entrance and the Big Room let visitors descend into the cave on foot or by elevator, and the Bat Flight Program at dusk from Memorial Day weekend through mid-to-late October lets visitors watch thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats emerge from the cave mouth.
Closer to camp, Brantley Lake is the water hub. The lake is stocked with largemouth bass, white bass, walleye, channel catfish, trout, sunfish, bluegill, and crappie, and the park offers boating, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, and exceptional bird watching along the Pecos River flyway.
Other stops within a reasonable drive include the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park in Carlsbad, Sitting Bull Falls Recreation Area in the Lincoln National Forest, and Roswell's UFO-themed museums to the north.

Artesia has a cold semi-arid climate with strong seasonal swings. June is the warmest month, with an average high near 95°F, so midsummer trips call for full hookups with reliable air conditioning and shaded sites where available. September is typically the wettest month, driven by the tail end of the North American monsoon, and heavy summer thunderstorms can trigger flash floods in arroyos and low-lying road crossings.
Spring and fall are the comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days and cooler nights. Spring winds average around 9.5 mph with higher gusts, so awnings and lightweight gear should be secured. The Bat Flight Program at Carlsbad Caverns runs from Memorial Day weekend through mid-to-late October, with the biggest flights typically in July and August.
Winters are short, with cold nights and occasional light snow that usually melts off quickly. Fire restrictions are common during dry stretches; under Stage II restrictions at Brantley Lake, wood and charcoal fires are prohibited while devices fueled solely by liquid petroleum or LPG that can be turned on and off remain allowed.
Booking and reservations
Private parks in and around Artesia, including Artesia RV Park and Storage, West Main RV Park, The Ranch RV Park, and Carlsbad KOA Holiday, take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Booking Carlsbad KOA Holiday early is recommended in spring and fall, when demand from Carlsbad Caverns visitors is highest.
For Brantley Lake State Park, sites are booked through the New Mexico State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made for today and up to six months in advance, and campers should bring proof of reservation to the site.
Carlsbad Caverns itself is a separate booking. Timed-entry reservations for the self-guided cave tour are made on Recreation.gov and are available 30 days in advance, up to 5 a.m. Mountain Time on the day of the tour. The reservation locks in the entry window only; a separate cave entrance fee or valid National Parks pass must be presented at the visitor center on arrival, and pass holders must still hold a reserved entry time.
What to expect on the ground
Expect desert conditions: open sky, limited natural shade, and long sight lines. Brantley Lake is a typical southwest desert campground with little shade, developed and primitive sites, and restrooms with showers, and most private parks in the area follow a similar gravel-and-hookup layout. Carlsbad KOA Holiday runs large pull-through sites with 30/50 amp full hookups, a maximum pull-through length around 75 feet, and amenities including a commercial laundry, showers, a fenced dog park, a community room, and a seasonal pool.
Distances add up. The KOA sits about 13 miles north of Carlsbad, and the cavern entrance is roughly another half hour beyond that, so plan on close to an hour and a half from Artesia to the visitor center.
There is no overnight lodging or established campground inside Carlsbad Caverns National Park, so all RV stays happen at surrounding private parks or at Brantley Lake.
