Campgrounds and RV parks near Carrizozo, NM

The signature stop is Valley of Fires Recreation Area, four miles west of town on US 380. The paved and accessible Malpais Nature Trail leads visitors out into the lava, and the area supports Chihuahuan desert plants along with roadrunners, quail, cottontails, mule deer, barbary sheep, lizards, and raptors including great horned owls, burrowing owls, hawks, and golden eagles. Day trips are easy in every direction. White Sands National Park is about an hour southwest for dune hikes and sledding. Smokey Bear Historical Park in Capitan, the Lincoln Historic Site in Billy the Kid country, and the mountain town of Ruidoso all sit within an hour east. Higher up, the Smokey Bear Ranger District of the Lincoln National Forest offers hiking, fishing on the Rio Ruidoso, and cool-weather escapes in summer.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the basin. Days run mild, nights are cool, and the wind that plagues March and April usually eases by May. Fall color in the aspens and cottonwoods above Ruidoso peaks in October. Summer brings heat on the flats and the North American Monsoon in the mountains. The area is dry overall, with generally low precipitation, though a small increase in rainfall occurs during late summer, often arriving in brief showers. Afternoon thunderstorms build over Sierra Blanca from roughly early July through early September, so plan hikes for morning. Wildfire closures on the Lincoln National Forest are possible in dry years, so check the current forest order before heading up. Winters are cold but sunny, with occasional snow. Lincoln National Forest is a year-round destination, with summer and fall popular for hiking and winter bringing snow sports and quieter landscapes. Some higher-elevation forest campgrounds close in winter, while private parks in and around Carrizozo generally stay open.

Carrizozo is high desert. Elevation, dry air, and strong sun mean sunscreen, layers, and extra drinking water are essential year-round. Cell coverage is reliable in town and along US 380 but drops in canyons east of Capitan and on forest roads. At Valley of Fires, expect exposed sites on the edge of the lava with wide views and steady wind. The campground offers 13 full-service RV sites with water and 30/50-amp electric hookups plus primitive and tent options, with a centrally located shower house, flush toilets, accessible vault toilets, water spigots, and a dump station. Each site has a covered picnic table, fire ring, and grill. The lava rock is sharp, so closed-toed shoes are a good idea for anyone leaving the pavement. Groceries, fuel, and propane are available in Carrizozo, Capitan, and Ruidoso. Services thin out quickly beyond those towns, so top off before heading toward White Sands or into the backcountry.
