Campgrounds and RV parks near Chama, NM

The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is the anchor activity. The route crosses the Colorado and New Mexico state line 11 times, passes through two tunnels, and climbs to 10,015-foot Cumbres Pass, the highest steam railroad pass in North America. Rio Chama RV Park sits close to the depot, making it walkable for train days. Fishing is the second draw. The Rio Chama holds trout along the village edge, and Abiquiu Lake to the south adds warm-water and shore options. Little Creel Resort has direct river access for anglers staying on site. Hikers and horseback riders use the Edward Sargent Wildlife Area on the north edge of town, where elk and mule deer are common at dawn and dusk. Carson National Forest trails, the Continental Divide Trail at Cumbres Pass, and the Brazos Cliffs viewpoints round out day-trip options.

The camping window is short and elevation-driven. Most campgrounds in the Chama area operate seasonally from roughly May through mid-October, with closures through winter because of snow and cold at the region's high elevation. The Cumbres and Toltec runs on a similar calendar, from late May into late October. Summer is the peak. Daytime highs sit in the low 70s Fahrenheit, nights stay cool, and the North American Monsoon delivers frequent afternoon thunderstorms in July and August. July is the busiest tourist month, and sites near the depot fill early for weekends and holidays. Chama Days, held the second weekend of August, adds a rodeo, softball tournament, and parade that pull additional traffic. Early fall brings aspen color through late September into early October and is often the best window for photography without monsoon storms. Winter shifts the valley to cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling, with heavy snowfall from December through March keeping most RV parks closed.

Chama is a small mountain village, not a resort town. Expect a compact main street with a grocery, a handful of restaurants, fuel, and the historic railroad yard. Cell coverage on major carriers is generally usable in town but drops off quickly on forest roads and at dispersed sites. Elevation matters. At nearly 8,000 feet, sun exposure is stronger and nights cool sharply even in July. Afternoon thunderstorms are the norm through monsoon season, so plan hikes and train arrivals for morning when possible. Most in-town RV parks offer 30 and 50 amp full hookups, level sites, and Wi-Fi that is adequate for basic use but not streaming. Big rigs are accommodated at parks like Sky Mountain Resort RV Park and Rio Chama RV Park. Wildlife including elk, deer, and occasionally bear moves through the valley, so store food and trash accordingly.
