Campgrounds and RV parks near Chimayo, NM

The Santuario de Chimayo draws visitors year-round and is the endpoint of a well-known Holy Week pilgrimage. From Chimayo, the High Road to Taos passes through Truchas, Las Trampas, and Penasco, all easy day trips by car once the RV is parked. Outdoor options are broad. Hyde Memorial State Park has hiking trails and picnic areas in a ponderosa and aspen forest along Little Tesuque Creek, with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Nambe Falls offers a double-drop waterfall, lake fishing, kayaking, and short hiking trails on Nambe Pueblo land. Santa Fe is about 45 minutes south and adds the Plaza, Canyon Road galleries, Meow Wolf, and museum row. Bandelier National Monument and the Valles Caldera lie west across the Rio Grande, and Taos and the Rio Grande Gorge sit about an hour north.

Spring brings mild days, cold nights, and the region's driest, windiest weather. Fire restrictions on state parks and national forest land are common from late spring into early summer, and wood fires are often prohibited even at developed campgrounds. Snowmelt can leave upper trails muddy into May. Summer is the busiest camping season. Afternoon thunderstorms from the North American monsoon are typical in July and August, and higher-elevation parks such as Hyde Memorial stay noticeably cooler than the valley. Nambe Falls Recreational Area - Nambe Pueblo typically operates from late March through October and is generally closed from mid-November to mid-March. Fall is a strong shoulder season, with cool days, crisp nights, and aspen color in the Sangre de Cristos through late September and October. Winter camping is limited but possible: Hyde Memorial State Park stays open year-round, and lower-valley RV parks around Santa Fe and Ojo Caliente operate through the cold months, though nights are well below freezing and snow is common.

Expect high desert conditions. Elevations near Chimayo run around 6,000 to 7,000 feet, and Hyde Memorial sits between roughly 8,300 and 9,400 feet, so nights are cool even in midsummer and altitude can affect first-day activity levels. Hookup availability varies. Full hookups are standard at the Santa Fe area private parks and at Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort and Spa RV Park. Hyde Memorial has a limited number of electric sites, and water at the office may be available during business hours but supply can be unreliable. Nambe Falls offers basic sites and shelters on Pueblo land. Cell service is inconsistent in the canyons and on tribal land, roads to some campgrounds include short dirt sections, and bears are active around Hyde Memorial, so food should be stored in a hard-sided vehicle or provided storage.
