Campgrounds and RV parks near Dulce, NM

Fishing drives most trips. Mundo Lake, about four miles south of Dulce, is managed for maximum public fishing opportunity and is stocked with rainbow trout and channel catfish, easily fished from shore, small boats, and float tubes. Stone Lake, roughly 18 miles south, is regarded as one of the best waters in the state for large rainbow trout and is most easily fished from small boats and float tubes. It is open April 1 to November 30 for angling with artificial flies and lures only. The Navajo River adds roughly 12 miles of stream on the reservation, with brown and rainbow trout and several primitive campsites along its banks. Beyond angling, the reservation offers hiking, boating, and wildlife viewing across mesa and forest country, with elk, black bears, and mountain lions all present. Pagosa Springs, a short drive north, adds hot springs, whitewater, and mountain trails for a change of pace.

Elevation shapes the calendar here. Summers are warm and dry, winters are freezing and snowy, and skies stay mostly clear year round, with temperatures typically varying from about 15°F to 83°F. Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window; winter access to tribal lakes is limited by snow, cold, and reduced services. Fishing seasons follow the tribal proclamation. The Jicarilla Apache Nation releases annual hunting and fishing proclamations, with seasons beginning April 1. Stone Lake is open April 1 to November 30 for angling with artificial flies and lures only. Summer brings the North American monsoon, with July typically the wettest month and afternoon thunderstorms common over the mesas. Fall is often the sweet spot: cooler nights, thinning crowds, elk activity, and aspens turning in the higher country. By late October, hard frosts and early snow begin to shut down primitive sites, and fire bans or road restrictions can appear on short notice, so travellers should check tribal notices before departure.

Expect a quiet, remote camping experience. Dulce is a small tribal capital with basic overnight accommodations and a community center, and services thin quickly once off US-64. Cell coverage is spotty in the backcountry. Tribal lake sites are basic. Stone Lake has about 24 tent-friendly sites at roughly 7,253 feet elevation, with tables, grills, water, and a dump station, and does not take reservations. Nights run cold even in summer thanks to elevation, so bring layers, and secure food against bears. Fire restrictions are common; recent notices have banned open fires until further notice, so confirm current rules with Jicarilla Game and Fish before lighting anything. Roads to the lakes include tribal gravel routes; large rigs should scout access before committing. Fuel and groceries are best topped up in Pagosa Springs, Chama, or Dulce itself.
