Campgrounds and RV parks near Farmington, NM

Navajo Lake is the second largest lake in the state, with multiple campgrounds, two marinas, and two boat docks, drawing anglers, boaters, water-skiers, and hikers. The San Juan River is a world-class fly fishing destination and features a campground, day use areas and a serene trail along the river. Cultural sites are the other main draw. Aztec Ruins National Monument, Salmon Ruins, and Chaco Culture National Historical Park preserve Ancestral Puebloan architecture, and Mesa Verde National Park is roughly an hour north in Colorado. The Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness south of town offers hoodoos and badlands hiking on BLM land. Closer in, Lake Farmington, Berg Park along the Animas River, and the Animas River trail system work well for shorter afternoons and family stops between longer drives.

Farmington experiences a cold semi-arid climate, marked by very large seasonal temperature contrasts. Summers are hot, while winters are cold and bring regular snowfall. The area is very dry overall, with precipitation generally low, though there is a small increase in late summer, occasionally arriving in brief showers. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with daytime highs generally in the 60s and 70s and cool nights. Late summer brings the North American monsoon. June is the driest month, with only about 8 mm of precipitation, while September records the highest monthly rainfall, averaging around 33 mm, and afternoon thunderstorms can produce flash flooding in slot canyons and badlands areas such as Bisti. Travelers heading into Chaco or off-pavement BLM roads should check conditions before driving in. Winter camping is possible in town but colder at Navajo Lake, which sits above 6,000 feet. Snow, ice, and freezing overnight lows are common from December through February, so RVers should plan for winterized water systems and confirm which loops at state park campgrounds remain open.

Most Farmington RV parks are practical, no-frills stays geared to travelers, work crews, and Four Corners road-trippers rather than resort guests. Expect full hookups, level gravel or paved pads, on-site laundry, and easy access to grocery stores, fuel, and RV service in town. At Navajo Lake State Park, sites range from primitive to full hookup, and elevations near 6,069 feet mean cool nights even in summer. Water is available at each campground and RV dump stations are available within the park. Each campsite accommodates up to seven people and dogs are welcome. Campsites include a grill or fire ring as well as a picnic table, often with a shelter. Fire restrictions may prohibit campfires and charcoal during dry stretches, so check current fire status before arrival. Cell coverage is solid in Farmington and spotty at Chaco, Bisti, and parts of Navajo Lake, so download maps in advance and carry extra water for any off-pavement side trips.
