Campgrounds near Grants, New Mexico
Grants sits along Interstate 40 in western New Mexico at roughly 6,500 feet elevation, on historic Route 66 between Albuquerque and Gallup. The high desert setting brings cool nights even in midsummer, and RV campers can choose from full-service parks close to I-40 or more remote sites near volcanic landscapes and Bluewater Lake. The town works well as a base for El Malpais National Monument, El Morro National Monument, Cibola National Forest, and Bluewater Lake State Park.
Closest to town, Grants KOA Journey offers full-hookup pull-through sites just off I-40 Exit 81, with a playground and cabins on site. Lavaland RV Park sits nearby on the west side of Grants, and Sky City RV Park and Casino lies east toward Acoma Pueblo, offering full hookups alongside the casino complex.
About 25 miles west, Pinon Cliff and Northpoint campgrounds at Bluewater Lake State Park offer lakeside and canyon sites with a mix of electric and non-electric spots at roughly 7,400 feet elevation, surrounded by pinon-juniper woodlands on the flank of the Zuni Mountains.
Things to do near Grants
El Malpais National Monument protects a rugged volcanic landscape of lava flows, cinder cones, and lava tubes, with marked trails, viewpoints, and cave routes accessible from Grants. La Ventana Natural Arch, one of the largest sandstone arches in New Mexico, sits along NM 117 southeast of town on a short family-friendly trail.
El Morro National Monument, about 42 miles southwest via NM 53 from Exit 81, features Inscription Rock with carvings dating back centuries and a headland trail to ancestral Puebloan ruins. Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano, a private attraction on NM 53, offers a trail into a collapsed lava tube holding perennial ice.
Bluewater Lake is recognized for its tiger muskie, rainbow trout, and channel catfish fishing. Acoma Pueblo's Sky City cultural center lies a short drive east of Grants.

Grants sits at high desert elevation, so seasons run cooler than lower New Mexico. Summer days typically reach the mid-80s to around 90, with cool nights in the upper 50s, and the North American monsoon brings afternoon thunderstorms from early July through August. Flash flooding can close dirt roads into El Malpais backcountry and Chain of Craters routes during monsoon season.
Spring is windy and dry with wide day-to-night swings, while fall brings the most stable weather: warm days, cool nights, and low humidity through October. Winter is cold with periodic snow, and January averages roughly four inches of snowfall. Because Bluewater Lake sits at around 7,400 feet, it can freeze over in winter, making it a destination for ice fishing when conditions allow.
Reservation windows track these patterns. Bluewater Lake State Park operates on reservations from mid-May through mid-September, with the balance of the year on a first-come, first-served basis. Full-service private parks along I-40 remain open year-round.
How to book campgrounds near Grants
Bluewater Lake State Park sites, including Pinon Cliff and Northpoint, are booked through the New Mexico State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made for today and up to six months in advance. Roughly half the sites at the park are reservable and the other half are first-come, first-served, and peak summer weekends fill fastest, particularly electric sites.
Private parks such as Grants KOA Journey, Lavaland RV Park, and Sky City RV Park and Casino accept direct online and phone bookings. El Morro Campground at El Morro National Monument is free, first-come, first-served, and cannot be reserved.
Bluewater Lake gate hours run 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. from April 1 through October 31, and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. from November 1 through March 31. Late arrivals must wait outside the gate until the next morning.
What to expect on the ground
Expect high-desert conditions: strong sun, low humidity, and cool nights year-round. Bring layers even in July, and check tire pressure after significant elevation changes coming from Albuquerque or Gallup. Cell coverage is reliable in Grants and along I-40 but drops quickly on NM 53, NM 117, and Cibola National Forest roads.
Rig size matters at federal sites. El Morro Campground can accommodate RVs and trailers up to 27 feet, with vault toilets, picnic tables, and seasonal water that is turned off once overnight temperatures reach freezing. There are no hookups or dump station at El Morro. Full hookups, laundry, and dump stations are concentrated at the private parks in town.
Occasional train and highway noise from I-40 and the BNSF main line is audible at campgrounds close to the interstate.
