Campgrounds and RV parks near Highland Meadows, NM

The signature stop is Acoma Sky City, one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in North America, perched atop a 367-foot sandstone mesa. Tribal-member guides lead a walking tour that runs about one hour and fifteen minutes and covers roughly three-quarters of a mile on the mesa top. Tour schedules and open days change seasonally and can shift for feast days, so calling ahead is essential. West of Highland Meadows, El Malpais offers access from I-40 via NM Highway 117 (exit 89) to the BLM Ranger Station, Joe Skeen Campground, La Ventana Natural Arch, and the Cebolla Wilderness, or via NM Highway 53 (exit 81) to El Calderon, lava tube caves, and West Malpais Wilderness. Sandstone Bluffs Overlook is a short drive from the ranger station. Albuquerque adds the Sandia Peak Tramway, Old Town, and the ABQ BioPark for family days.

The high desert here has four distinct seasons at elevations above a mile. Summers are hot and dry, winters are short but cold with regular snowfall, and skies are mostly clear year round. Late spring through early summer brings the strongest winds, and afternoon thunderstorms build during the North American monsoon in July and August. Summer daytime highs regularly push into the 90s Fahrenheit, but low humidity and cool nights keep RV interiors comfortable after sundown. June is exceptionally arid, averaging under 10 mm of precipitation, while July is the wettest month with around 25 mm and frequent afternoon storms. Monsoon downpours can flood dirt access roads to backcountry sites, so plan pavement-only routes when clouds build. Fall is arguably the best window: warm days, cold nights, thinner crowds at Acoma and El Malpais, and generally stable weather through mid-November. Winter camping is doable at full-service parks along I-40, but expect overnight freezes and occasional snow. Backcountry roads on BLM and tribal lands can become impassable after storms.

Highland Meadows sits at high-desert elevation, so expect thin air, strong sun, and sharp day-to-night temperature swings. Bring sun shades, extra water, and layers even in summer. Cell coverage is generally solid along I-40 but drops quickly on side roads toward El Malpais and the Zuni Mountains. Private parks in this corridor typically offer full hookups, laundry, and pull-through sites sized for big rigs and toads. Sky City RV Park caters to Class A motorhomes with 42 oversized pull-throughs, 20/30/50 amp service, water and sewer at each site, free wi-fi, and walking access to a clubhouse with showers, laundry, and Mount Taylor views. Joe Skeen and other BLM sites are primitive, with vault toilets, covered picnic tables, fire grills, and no hookups. Wildlife includes coyotes, mule deer, and pronghorn. Fire restrictions are common from late spring through monsoon onset, so check current stage restrictions before lighting a campfire.
