Campgrounds and RV parks near Holloman Air Force Base, NM

White Sands National Park is the anchor attraction. Visitors can drive the Dunes Drive scenic road, walk the interdune boardwalk, sled the gypsum, and stay for sunset. Sand sleds are available through the park's concession partner near the visitor center. Oliver Lee Memorial State Park, about 20 minutes south of Alamogordo, sits against the Sacramento Mountains and features a historic ranch house, quiet camping in the Chihuahuan Desert, and the Dog Canyon Trail past cottonwood-shaded pools fed by year-round springs. Many families add the New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo and a day trip up to Cloudcroft in the Lincoln National Forest for cooler temperatures and shade.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in the Tularosa Basin. Daytime temperatures are mild in spring and fall, though evenings turn chilly. White Sands National Park is open year-round, and winter days are usually pleasant with freezing temperatures possible at night. October is widely considered a top month for hiking and photography on the dunes. Summer brings intense heat and the North American monsoon. Afternoon highs commonly reach the low 90s Fahrenheit (around 32 to 33 Celsius), and July is the wettest month, with rainfall continuing through mid-September. Afternoon thunderstorms, blowing sand, and brief flash-flood risks are common in July and August. Missile testing on the adjacent range causes irregular closures. Dunes Drive may close during military tests for up to three hours, and highway roadblocks can change with little notice. White Sands Missile Range periodically closes portions of US-70 between Alamogordo and Las Cruces during testing. Trip planners should check the NPS park-closures page and WSMR updates the day before travel.

The landscape is high desert: open, bright, and windy. Elevations around Alamogordo sit near 4,300 feet, so nights cool quickly even after hot afternoons. Shade is scarce at most RV parks, so awnings and reflective window covers help in summer. Cell coverage on the major carriers is generally strong in and around Alamogordo. Water is at a premium, so refill tanks whenever possible and plan fuel stops on the drive west on US-70 toward Las Cruces. The Tularosa Basin has clear, sunny skies most days of the year, so sun protection and extra drinking water are essential. Wildlife includes lizards, rattlesnakes, kit foxes, and roadrunners, so keep pets leashed and check under RV slides before departure.
