Campgrounds near McIntosh
McIntosh is a small community in Torrance County, central New Mexico, sitting at roughly 6,160 feet in the Estancia Valley between the Manzano Mountains to the west and the high plains to the east. State Road 41 passes through town, and Interstate 40 runs a few miles to the north through Moriarty, putting Albuquerque about an hour away by RV.
RV options cluster along the I-40 corridor and inside the Estancia Valley. Happy Trails RV Park and Zia RV Park serve travelers passing through Moriarty, while Salt Missions RV Park and Salt Missions Park sit closer to the historic Salinas mission sites south of McIntosh. Cuervo Mountain RV Park and Horse Hotel caters to riders and long-haul travelers, with pens for horses alongside RV sites.
The surrounding public lands add primitive and developed camping in the Manzano Mountains, including Manzano Mountains State Park, located 16 miles north of Mountainair on the eastern slope of the Manzano Mountains, expanding options for travelers who want to combine a hookup base with backcountry day trips.
Things to do near McIntosh
The area's biggest draw is Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument, a three-unit park preserving 17th-century Spanish mission ruins and ancestral Puebloan sites at Quarai, Abó, and Gran Quivira, all loosely clustered around Mountainair south of McIntosh. Admission is free, and each unit has short interpretive trails suitable for kids.
Manzano Mountains State Park has 23 miles of hiking trails through ponderosa pine at an elevation of 7,250 feet, plus wildlife viewing, birding, and stargazing. The park sits in a quiet foothills setting well suited to day hikes and photography.
Albuquerque and Santa Fe are both within about an hour's drive, giving travelers access to city amenities, Old Town, and the Sandia Peak Tramway on day trips.

The Estancia Valley sits at high-desert elevation, so seasons run cooler than lower New Mexico. Summers are warm rather than hot, with July highs averaging in the mid-80s Fahrenheit and cool nights, making June through August the most comfortable stretch for RV travel. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August during the North American monsoon, and July is the wettest month, averaging about 82 mm of precipitation.
Winters are short but genuinely cold, with January lows around the mid-20s Fahrenheit and periodic snow. Manzano Mountains State Park is a seasonal park, closed December 1 through March 31, with reservations required April 1 through October 15 and first-come, first-served access from October 16 to November 30. Full-service private RV parks along I-40 generally stay open year-round.
Spring brings strong winds, especially in April, which can be a factor for taller rigs and awnings. Fall is a quieter window with mild days, cool nights, and cottonwoods turning in the mission-site canyons.
Booking and reservations
New Mexico State Parks, including Manzano Mountains State Park, take reservations through the ReserveAmerica-powered New Mexico State Parks system. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to six months in advance. A New Mexico State Park day-use or annual pass is required for entry, and about half the sites have electric hookups while the rest are dry.
Private RV parks in and around Moriarty and McIntosh, including Happy Trails RV Park, Salt Missions RV Park, Salt Missions Park, Cuervo Mountain RV Park and Horse Hotel, and Zia RV Park, typically book directly by phone or through their own websites. Summer weekends and the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta window in early October fill fastest, so reserving several weeks out is advisable.
What to expect
Expect a rural, high-plains setting with wide horizons, juniper grasslands, and long views to the Manzano and Sandia ranges. Cell service is generally usable along the I-40 corridor and at most private RV parks, but signal thins quickly on backroads and in the mountains.
Elevation matters. McIntosh sits above 6,000 feet, and Manzano Mountains State Park is over 7,000 feet, so nights are cool even in summer and altitude can affect first-day energy. Pack layers, sun protection, and extra water. Fire restrictions are common in dry stretches and can prohibit open flames at state parks.
Services are limited outside Moriarty and Mountainair. Grocery, fuel, and propane are best handled along I-40 before heading toward the mission sites or state park, where the nearest full store can be roughly 25 minutes away.
