Campgrounds near Mesita
Mesita is one of the six villages of the Laguna Pueblo, along with Encinal, Laguna, Paguate, Paraje and Seama. The reservation is home to about 3,800 people and sits roughly 45 miles west of Albuquerque on Interstate 40. The village lies on the 1926 alignment of Route 66 that linked Gallup, Laguna and Mesita with Los Lunas and Albuquerque, and the old US 66 can still be driven close to town. I-40 was built just west of Route 66, and Mesita is reached from Exit 117.
RV travellers typically base out of parks along the I-40 corridor between Albuquerque and Grants. The closest developed option is Sky City RV Park and Casino, run by Acoma Pueblo just west of Mesita off Exit 102. Route 66 RV Resort and Enchanted Trails RV Park and Trading Post sit east toward Albuquerque, while American RV Resort and High Desert RV Park anchor the west side of the metro. All five give quick highway access for day trips to the pueblos, El Malpais and Petroglyph National Monument.
Mesita works well as a mid-route stop or a base for exploring west-central New Mexico, with Grants roughly 30 miles to the west and Albuquerque about 45 miles east.
Things to do near Mesita
The main draw is Acoma Sky City, a mesa-top pueblo reached via guided tours from the Sky City Cultural Center. Acoma Pueblo is regarded as the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States, and before modern times access was gained only by a hand-cut staircase carved into the sandstone. Acoma Pueblo is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan tour days accordingly.
West of Mesita, El Malpais National Conservation Area protects the Zuni-Bandera volcanic field and features dramatic sandstone cliffs, canyons, La Ventana Natural Arch, the Chain of Craters Back Country Byway, Joe Skeen Campground, the Narrows Picnic Area, and the Cebolla and West Malpais Wilderness Areas. The adjacent National Monument offers lava tube caves, hiking and stargazing.
Closer to the village, the St. Joseph Church at Old Laguna is visible from I-40 and dates from the turn of the 18th century, dominating the skyline of the main pueblo.

Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window. Days are warm and dry, and the North American Monsoon delivers brief afternoon thunderstorms from July into August. Visitors should be cautious during the monsoon season, when unpredictable weather and flash flooding can develop quickly, especially on unpaved roads inside El Malpais and on pueblo backroads.
Spring is windy and dusty across central New Mexico, which matters for high-profile motorhomes and towables on I-40. Fall brings mild days, cool nights and generally clear skies, plus lighter campground demand once schools return.
Winter is cold at this elevation. Nights routinely drop below freezing, snow falls on a handful of days each month from December through March, and some park water systems are shut off at the sites once hard frost arrives. Feast days are cultural highlights: the village of Mesita celebrates three patron saints on August 15, marking the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary's Assumption into Heaven, St. Anthony, and Sacred Heart of Jesus. Nearby Laguna villages also hold public feasts on September 19 and March 19.
Booking an RV site near Mesita
Tribal and private parks in the area handle reservations directly rather than through federal systems. For Sky City RV Park and Casino, check-in is handled at the casino hotel front desk, and travellers report that callers should contact the hotel desk to reserve a space; after-hours arrivals also check in at the casino. Route 66 RV Resort, Enchanted Trails RV Park and Trading Post, American RV Resort and High Desert RV Park take bookings by phone or through their own websites.
For public land, Joe Skeen Campground inside El Malpais NCA operates differently. The campground has 10 free campsites available only on a first-come, first-served basis, with no reservation system. Stay is limited to 7 days per month in the campground. Arrive early on weekends, especially in spring and fall.
What to expect
Expect high-desert conditions: elevations near 6,000 feet, low humidity, wide day-to-night temperature swings and strong sun. Cell coverage is generally good along I-40 and thins quickly off the interstate on pueblo and BLM roads.
At Sky City RV Park, 42 oversized pull-through spaces are designed for large motorhomes towing other vehicles, with full hook-ups for electricity, water and sewer, waste dump access, and a clubhouse within walking distance. Reviewers describe the park as basic but convenient, with a free shuttle to the casino and sites that fit large rigs without unhitching.
Alcohol rules and photography rules apply on tribal land. Much of the pueblo is private, and photography, drawing, and audio or video recording are not generally allowed, though visitors can seek permission for these activities or to hike or drive in tribal areas through the Pueblo of Laguna.
