Campgrounds and RV parks near Milan, NM

El Malpais National Monument, just south of Grants, is the headline attraction. Visitors can drive scenic overlooks, walk short trails, and explore lava tubes and cinder cones across a landscape shaped by past volcanic activity. The adjacent El Malpais National Conservation Area, managed by the BLM, adds La Ventana Natural Arch, the Chain of Craters Back Country Byway, and the Narrows Picnic Area. Bluewater Lake State Park draws anglers for tiger muskie, rainbow trout, and channel catfish, plus boating, kayaking, and hiking around the lake and Bluewater Creek dam overlook. Acoma Pueblo (Sky City), one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in North America, offers guided cultural tours about 50 miles east. El Morro National Monument and the Ice Caves and Bandera Volcano round out the loop.

The Milan and Grants area sits at roughly 6,460 feet, so seasons run cooler than lower-elevation New Mexico. Summers are warm and dry with hot afternoons and cool nights, and July and August bring the North American monsoon: brief but intense thunderstorms, lightning, and the risk of flash flooding in arroyos and on lava terrain. Wildflowers and greener pinon-juniper landscapes follow the monsoon rains. Spring is windy with rapidly warming days and occasional late snow. Fall is often the most comfortable stretch for RV travel, with mild days, cool nights, and lower campground occupancy after Labor Day. Winters are cold, snowy at times, and windy, with Bluewater Lake occasionally freezing enough for ice fishing. Bluewater Lake State Park stays open year-round, but gate hours shift shorter in the November through March winter window, and online reservations for arrival dates are available roughly mid-May through mid-September. Outside that window, sites at Pinon Cliff and Northpoint are typically first come, first served.

Expect high-desert conditions: strong sun, low humidity, big day-to-night temperature swings, and afternoon wind. Elevation ranges from about 6,460 feet in Milan to over 7,400 feet at Bluewater Lake, so nights stay cool even in summer. Interstate 40 and the BNSF rail line pass close to town, and some private parks near the highway have audible train noise. Bluewater Lake State Park has 149 developed sites across several campgrounds, with a limited number of electric hookups and the remainder primitive. Restrooms with flush toilets and showers are available in the developed loops, along with a dump station. Wild horses and jackrabbits are commonly seen in the park, so keep pets leashed. Cell service is spotty away from I-40, and the nearest full-service groceries and fuel are in Grants and Milan.
