Campgrounds and RV parks near Mora, NM

Fishing is the headline activity. The lake at Morphy Lake State Park is stocked with trout and kokanee salmon, and boats are allowed on the lake, but no gas-powered motors are permitted. Coyote Creek bisects its namesake park and is one of the most densely stocked trout streams in the state. At Storrie Lake, the 1,100-acre surface supports motorized boating, sailing, and windsurfing, and the lake hosts Hobie Cat Flotilla 48 racing during the season. Families with kids often prefer the shallow shoreline at Storrie Lake, while paddlers gravitate to Morphy Lake for quiet water. A 2-mile loop trail circles through Coyote Creek State Park, crossing the creek twice and passing several beaver ponds. The historic town of Las Vegas, New Mexico, roughly 30 miles south, adds groceries, fuel, and Victorian-era streetscapes for a day off the trail.

Elevation drives the calendar here. Morphy Lake's peak season runs March through October, offering camping, restrooms, and trails, and the park is closed October 31st through February weather permitting. Its high altitude and location in northern New Mexico cause the lake to freeze over in the winter, allowing ice fishing during limited access windows. Coyote Creek is managed by New Mexico State Parks and runs year-round, though water hookups and roughly the back two-thirds of the park are closed from October through March, so winter visitors should confirm what's available before arriving. Storrie Lake State Park is open year-round, although water hookups and showers are winterized from October through April, leaving vault toilets and reduced amenities during the cold months. Summer brings the North American monsoon, with afternoon thunderstorms common from July into early September. Fire restrictions are common in late spring and early summer, and under Stage II restrictions campfires and wood or charcoal stoves are prohibited, though LPG devices that can be turned on and off remain allowed. Check current restrictions before travel.

Expect cool nights year-round. Even in July, temperatures at this elevation run cool enough to warrant warm layers and extra blankets at night, so pack accordingly regardless of the season. Bring firewood or a propane stove, and plan meals around possible fire bans. Amenities vary widely. Coyote Creek State Park offers 47 developed campsites, 17 with electric hookups, plus drinking water, flush toilets, showers, a dump station, playground, and picnic area. By contrast, Morphy Lake is popular for fishing, camping, and picnicking, however, there is no running water, so visitors must pack their own. Cell coverage is limited, and Verizon users report a 3G signal sufficient for calls but not reliable data. Download offline maps before leaving town, top off fuel, and pick up groceries in Mora or Las Vegas, since stores in the smaller villages are sparse and often close early.
