Campgrounds and RV parks near Ojo Amarillo, NM

The area's headline attractions are archaeological. Aztec Ruins National Monument, about 15 miles east near the town of Aztec, preserves a large Ancestral Puebloan great house with a reconstructed Great Kiva. Chaco Culture National Historical Park, roughly a two-hour drive south on a mix of paved and unpaved road, holds one of the densest concentrations of Puebloan ruins in the Southwest. Outdoor days center on the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness south of Farmington, known for eroded hoodoos and fossil beds, and the Shiprock pinnacle roughly 30 miles west, viewable from public roads only. The Four Corners Monument sits about an hour west. Closer to camp, the San Juan, Animas, and La Plata rivers converge in Farmington, supporting drift fishing, paddling, and river trails. Navajo Lake, about an hour east, adds boating and camping, and the San Juan River is a world-class fly fishing destination on the tailwater below the dam.

The region has a cold semi-arid climate with hot, dry summers and short, cold winters. Elevation keeps summer highs from reaching the extremes of southern New Mexico, and Farmington averages 279 sunny days per year. Nights are cool even in July, which favors comfortable RV sleeping without heavy air-conditioning demand. Late June through September brings the North American Monsoon. Officially running June 15 to September 30, it delivers the bulk of warm-season rainfall through afternoon thunderstorms, with July and August the most active. Storms can trigger flash flooding in washes and turn the unpaved access roads to Chaco and Bisti to impassable mud within minutes. Winter brings freezing nights, occasional snow, and reduced services at some public campgrounds. Spring is windy and can produce blowing dust. Early fall, after the monsoon eases, is often the most settled stretch for road trips: warm days, cool nights, and clear skies for stargazing at Chaco's designated Dark Sky park.

Expect a working, high-desert landscape rather than a resort setting. Private RV parks in the Farmington corridor are practical and functional, with hookups, laundry, and easy highway access, but limited shade and minimal landscaping. Long-term tenants are common, so quiet-hour enforcement and site condition vary by park. Public campgrounds trade amenities for scenery. Gallo Campground has a restroom facility with flushable toilets, but no showers, no hookups, no convenience store or food services, and the final miles in are unpaved and rough on trailers. Navajo Lake sites range from bare primitive pads to full hookups, with strong sun exposure at most loops. Come prepared for dry air, intense UV at elevation, big day-to-night temperature swings, and afternoon monsoon storms in mid-summer. Cell coverage drops off quickly once you leave the Farmington area.
