Campgrounds near Paraje
Paraje is a small village on the Laguna Pueblo reservation in Cibola County, west-central New Mexico, sitting on old Route 66 along the San Jose River. The Laguna reservation includes six villages, Encinal, Laguna, Mesita, Paguate, Paraje, and Seama, and lies about 45 miles west of Albuquerque. Interstate 40 runs just north of the village, which puts RV travelers within easy reach of both Albuquerque and Gallup.
Most RV infrastructure is clustered along the I-40 corridor between Paraje and Grants. Sky City RV Park and Casino sits at the neighboring Acoma Pueblo exit, while Lavaland RV Park and Grants KOA Journey are the closest full-service options in Grants. Farther east toward Albuquerque, Route 66 RV Resort and Enchanted Trails RV Park and Trading Post give travelers a metro-area base with easy interstate access.
Sky City RV Park sits at Interstate 40 exit 102 alongside historic Route 66, with 42 oversized pull-through spaces designed for large motorhomes, full hookups for electricity and water, a dump station, plus a clubhouse with whirlpool spa, showers, laundry, and a travel center within walking distance. Paraje itself has no lodging, so an RV is a practical way to visit the area.
Things to do near Paraje
The headline attraction is Acoma Pueblo, also called Sky City. The pueblo sits atop a sandstone mesa and is regarded as one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States. The Sky City Cultural Center and Haak'u Museum offer exhibits on Acoma history, Pueblo pottery, and Southwest Native art. Guided mesa-top tours are the only way to visit Old Acoma itself.
El Malpais National Conservation Area and the adjoining National Monument are the other major draw. The area features sandstone cliffs, canyons, La Ventana Natural Arch, the Chain of Craters Back Country Byway, Joe Skeen Campground, and the Cebolla and West Malpais Wilderness Areas, with hiking, caving, photography, and wildlife viewing. Route 66 sightseeing, Mount Taylor viewpoints, and lava-tube caves round out a typical trip.

The Paraje-Grants corridor sits above 6,000 feet, so seasons are more pronounced than the desert stereotype suggests. Summers are warm and dry, winters are very cold, snowy, and windy, and skies are mostly clear year round. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days and cool nights.
Summer brings the North American Monsoon. The monsoon typically starts in late June and can extend into September, and July and August are the wettest months across much of the state. Afternoon thunderstorms, flash-flood potential on dirt roads, and lightning are the main planning concerns, especially in El Malpais backcountry and on Chain of Craters CR 42.
Winter can bring snow and hard freezes. Measurable snow is most common from November through March, with January typically the snowiest month. Most private RV parks along I-40 stay open year-round, but water hookups may be shut off at some sites during hard freezes, and dump stations can be affected.
Booking and reservations
Private RV parks in the corridor, including Sky City RV Park and Casino, Lavaland RV Park, Grants KOA Journey, Route 66 RV Resort, and Enchanted Trails RV Park and Trading Post, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. KOA properties also book through the KOA app. For summer weekends and Route 66 road-trip season, booking several weeks ahead is prudent.
Public-land camping runs on a different system. Joe Skeen Campground in the El Malpais NCA is open year-round with 10 free first-come, first-served sites and no reservation option, each with a covered picnic table, fire grill, and tent space, and some pull-through parking accommodating total lengths up to 50 feet. Total stay in the NCA is limited to 14 days per month, and stay in the campground itself is limited to 7 days per month.
Acoma mesa-top tours must be arranged through the Sky City Cultural Center and can be canceled on short notice for ceremonies.
What to expect
Expect high-desert driving conditions. Elevations sit above 6,000 feet, so engines and generators run a bit less efficiently and overnight temperatures can drop sharply even in summer. I-40 is the main artery; secondary routes onto tribal lands and into El Malpais include unpaved sections that turn to mud after monsoon storms.
Cell coverage is spotty away from I-40 and inside El Malpais. Download offline maps before leaving Grants or Albuquerque. Fuel, groceries, propane, and dump stations are easiest to find in Grants, which is the practical resupply town for the whole region.
Acoma and Laguna are active, living Pueblo communities. Visitors should check opening hours before a planned visit and be prepared for last-minute tour cancellations, since the pueblo closes to outside visitors for ceremonies and feast days. Photography, drawing, and audio or video recording are generally restricted on tribal land, and permits are required at Sky City.
