Campgrounds and RV parks near Red River, NM

Fishing, hiking, and off-road driving dominate warm-weather trips. The Red River itself runs through town and past several campgrounds, and stocked ponds and creeks in the Carson National Forest give families easy shoreline access. Trailheads into the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness and toward Wheeler Peak, the highest point in New Mexico, sit within a short drive. The Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway loops past Questa, Eagle Nest Lake, and Angel Fire, making a full-day RV or tow-vehicle drive. Cimarron Canyon State Park east of town adds trout fishing and canyon hiking. In winter, Red River Ski & Summer Area sits at the edge of town, and the Enchanted Forest Cross-Country Ski Area offers groomed Nordic trails, snowshoe routes, and yurts. Summer brings live music, jeep tours, and mountain biking on lift-served and Forest Service trails.

Red River is a true four-season destination, but campground availability shifts sharply with elevation and snowpack. Carson National Forest campgrounds along NM-38, including Fawn Lakes, Junebug, Elephant Rock, and Columbine, operate roughly May through late September or early October, and opening and closing dates are weather permitting. Snow can linger on higher forest roads well into spring, and early-season riverside sites sometimes see high water during snowmelt. Summer is peak season. July brings the North American Monsoon, with brief but heavy afternoon thunderstorms rolling through most days into August. Nights stay cool even in midsummer, and daytime highs rarely push past the mid-80s. Late September into early October is prime aspen color along the Enchanted Circle, and reservations tighten around fall-color weekends. Winter reshapes the map. Commercial RV parks in town and near Questa generally stay open with plowed access for ski-season visitors, while Forest Service sites close and higher back-country roads are impassable without snow travel gear.

Elevation is the biggest surprise for first-time visitors. At about 8,750 feet, nights stay cool year-round, engines and generators run less efficiently, and altitude can affect sleep for the first day or two. Pack layers even in July, and expect afternoon thunderstorms during monsoon season. In-town RV parks tend to have tight, close-set sites with mature trees and river frontage, so larger fifth-wheels and Class A rigs should confirm site dimensions before booking. Forest Service campgrounds have narrow access roads and are better suited to smaller trailers, vans, and truck campers. Bears frequent the area, so food storage rules apply at both public and private campgrounds. Cell coverage is reliable in town but drops quickly in side canyons and on forest roads, and grocery and fuel options thin out west of Questa.
