Campgrounds near Shiprock
Shiprock sits in the northwest corner of New Mexico on the Navajo Nation, near the intersection of US Highway 491 and US Highway 64. The town is best known for Shiprock Peak (Tsé Bit'a'í), a volcanic monolith rising nearly 1,600 feet from the high-desert plain. It functions as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Four Corners region, with Farmington, Cortez, and the Colorado border all within roughly an hour's drive.
RV options in and immediately around town are limited and skew toward small, no-frills parks. The Working Man's RV Park and Homestead RV Park serve travelers stopping in Shiprock itself, while B and L RV Park and Storage and Sundowner Mobile and RV Park offer additional hookup sites in the area. Ute Mountain Casino Hotel, across the Colorado line near Towaoc, provides RV parking alongside its casino property.
Camping on open Navajo Nation land outside designated parks is not permitted without a Navajo Parks and Recreation permit, so travelers should plan overnight stays at established RV facilities.
Things to do near Shiprock
Shiprock Peak dominates the visitor experience. Climbing the formation is prohibited, and access to the base is restricted unless traveling with a permitted Navajo guide. The best public viewpoints are along US Highway 491 south of town and US Highway 64 west of Farmington, with Indian Service Route 13 offering closer paved-road views toward the south dike.
Day trips from Shiprock reach several major sites: the Four Corners Monument (the only spot where four states meet, operated by Navajo Parks and Recreation), the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness south of Farmington with its hoodoos and badlands, Mesa Verde National Park across the Colorado line, and Canyon de Chelly National Monument to the west in Arizona. The Northern Navajo Nation Fair, held each fall in Shiprock, draws visitors for a parade, rodeo, powwow, arts and crafts, and traditional song and dance.

December - February
43° / 19°F 15 mmCold, dry, occasional snow; some parks reduce services
Shiprock has a cold semi-arid climate with hot, dry summers and cold, occasionally snowy winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild daytime temperatures, low humidity, and generally dry roads. March through May can bring gusty winds and blowing dust, so travelers with high-profile rigs should watch forecasts on exposed highways.
Summer daytime highs regularly climb into the 90s. The North American monsoon officially runs June 15 through September 30, with most rainfall concentrated in July and August. Afternoon thunderstorms can bring heavy downpours, lightning, and flash flooding, particularly on dirt roads and in washes on the Navajo Nation. Unpaved routes to viewpoints can become impassable quickly after storms.
Winter is the quietest season. Days are often sunny but cold, overnight lows dip well below freezing, and periodic snow and ice affect roads. Some smaller RV parks reduce services in winter, so travelers should confirm hookups and water availability before arrival.
Booking and reservations
Private RV parks around Shiprock generally take reservations by phone, and calling ahead is recommended given the limited number of sites. The Working Man's RV Park, Homestead RV Park, B and L RV Park and Storage, and Sundowner Mobile and RV Park all cater primarily to travelers passing through, so availability shifts with regional events and the summer travel window. Ute Mountain Casino Hotel handles RV inquiries through its front desk.
For camping on Navajo Nation land outside private parks, non-Navajo visitors must obtain a Backcountry or Camping Permit from the Navajo Parks and Recreation Department. Permits are issued at park offices and cannot be replaced by a National Park pass. Reservations for nearby federal sites at Mesa Verde and Chaco Culture use Recreation.gov.
What to expect
Expect a working, rural community rather than a resort destination. RV parks in the Shiprock area are basic: gravel or dirt pads, standard hookups, and limited amenities. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town along US 491 and US 64 but drops quickly on side roads across the reservation. Grocery, fuel, and propane are available in Shiprock, with larger selections in Farmington about 30 miles east.
Visitors should respect Navajo Nation laws and customs. Shiprock Peak is sacred; climbing, base jumping, and off-road driving toward the formation are prohibited. Drones require a permit from the Navajo Nation Film Office. Alcohol is banned on the reservation.
Distances between fuel stops and attractions are long, so travelers should top off tanks, carry water, and plan routes with the monsoon forecast in mind during summer.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shiprock,New%20MexicoWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Shiprock, New Mexico?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Shiprock, no commercial or special RV endorsement required, even for larger Class A motorhomes. Approved drivers on RVezy must generally be at least 25 years old, and your ID is verified inside the platform during booking so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club along with your home license. Most first-time renters in northwest New Mexico are surprised at how quick and paperwork-free the whole process is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs the RV protected in case something goes wrong during my trip?
Yes, every RV rental in Shiprock booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan with 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 491 with confidence. The protection plan covers eligible accidental damage to the vehicle, and you choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host. This is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides serious peace of mind, especially when you're driving the remote stretches of the Four Corners. Review the protection options carefully at booking and pick the level that matches your comfort, you'll see the price difference clearly before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Shiprock RV rental?
Booking is low risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the individual host), and it includes a grace-period full-refund window after you book, so you have room to firm up your plans. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out you are from your trip start date and special circumstances like natural disasters, which matters in northwest New Mexico where late-summer monsoon storms can occasionally affect travel. You'll see the exact cancellation terms during checkout before you pay. If a wildfire or road closure pops up near Shiprock, contact RVezy support right away, they'll walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Shiprock RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Shiprock is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search, and you'll see every host who welcomes dogs (and sometimes cats) in their rig. Some owners charge a small pet cleaning fee, which is clearly listed on the listing page. Dogs love the wide-open mesas and pet-friendly trails at nearby Angel Peak Scenic Area and the Animas River trails up in Farmington. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet size and breed details, and pack extra water since high-desert hikes around Shiprock Pinnacle can dehydrate pups fast.
nps.gov/subjects/pets/index.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Shiprock?
Yes, RV delivery in Shiprock is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to your campground, like Cottonwood Campground at Navajo Lake State Park or a site in Farmington, set it up, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are set per mile by each host and shown on the listing. This is a game-changer if you're flying into Farmington (FMN) or Durango (DRO) and want a true campervan rental Shiprock experience without driving a big rig yourself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shiprock,New%20MexicoHow far can I drive on a typical Shiprock RV rental?
You'll have plenty of room to roam. Most hosts in the Shiprock area offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some advertise RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for a Four Corners road trip. Additional miles typically run $0.35 to $0.50 each. To give you a sense of distance: Mesa Verde National Park is about 55 miles north, Chaco Culture National Historical Park is roughly 100 miles southeast, Monument Valley is around 130 miles west, and Canyon de Chelly is about 90 miles southwest. Pro tip: map your full route before booking and message the host for a custom mileage package if you're planning a big loop.
nps.gov/meve/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Shiprock, NM?
You've got great options within an easy drive. Cottonwood Campground and Pine Main Campground at Navajo Lake State Park (about an hour east) offer full and partial hookups with sites that fit rigs up to 50 feet. Gallo Campground inside Chaco Culture National Historical Park (about two hours south) is open year-round with sites up to 40 feet. Closer in, you'll find Sundowner Mobile and RV Park and Moore's RV Park in nearby Farmington with full hookups and easy access to grocery stores. Pro tip: Navajo Lake books up fast on summer weekends, so reserve six months out through the New Mexico State Parks system.
emnrd.nm.gov/spd/find-a-park/navajo-lake-state-park/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Shiprock?
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV camping Shiprock. April through mid-June brings comfortable daytime highs in the 65 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit range with cool nights perfect for campfires, while September and October deliver crisp blue-sky days and golden cottonwoods along the San Juan River. Summer (late June through August) regularly tops 90 degrees and brings dramatic afternoon monsoon thunderstorms, so plan to drive in the morning. Winters are quiet with daytime highs in the 40s and occasional snow, great for solitude at Shiprock Pinnacle viewpoints. Pro tip: aim for late September to catch warm days, cool nights, and the smallest crowds at Mesa Verde.
weather.gov/abq/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay around Shiprock?
You'll be in great shape, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, the water system, propane, the generator, and dumping, so nothing's a mystery before you pull away. The roads around Shiprock are wide and gently rolling, US-491 and US-64 are well-maintained two-lane highways with plenty of pullouts. Stick to daylight hours since this part of the Navajo Nation has very little nighttime lighting and occasional wildlife on the road. Pro tip: ask your host for a short practice loop in the parking lot before you head out, they're happy to do it.
dot.nm.gov/travel-information/What if something breaks down on my Shiprock RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every motorhome rental in Shiprock booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if needed. One call and help is dispatched, even out on the more remote stretches between Shiprock and Chaco Canyon. Your host is also just a message away for quick fixes like resetting a breaker or relighting the water heater. Cell service can be spotty in the Four Corners area, so download offline maps and save the roadside assistance number to your phone contacts before you leave Farmington.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are popular road trip routes from Shiprock?
An RV road trip from Shiprock puts you right in the middle of the Four Corners, so the options are incredible. Head north about 55 miles to Mesa Verde National Park for ancient cliff dwellings, west about 30 miles to the Four Corners Monument, then about 125 miles further to Monument Valley on the Arizona-Utah line. You can also loop south about 100 miles to Chaco Culture National Historical Park, or northeast about 95 miles to Durango, Colorado for the historic narrow-gauge railroad. Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed with host approval; Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. A 5 to 7 day Four Corners loop hits all the icons without rushing.
nps.gov/foco/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Shiprock RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier line items to plan. Class C motorhomes around Shiprock typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans get 16 to 20, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Gas in San Juan County, NM tends to run slightly above the national average, so fill up in Farmington where there's the most competition rather than at remote Navajo Nation stations. For a 5-day, 500-mile loop you're looking at roughly $200 to $350 in fuel for a typical Class C. Pro tip: top off before heading toward Chaco Canyon, there are no fuel stations on the final 20 miles of dirt access road.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Shiprock?
For peak summer weekends, six months out is your sweet spot, especially for Navajo Lake State Park, which takes reservations through ReserveAmerica via the New Mexico State Parks system up to 180 days in advance. Chaco Culture National Historical Park's Gallo Campground books through Recreation.gov, also opening six months ahead and filling fast during equinox events. For private RV parks in Farmington like Sundowner and Moore's, two to four weeks is usually plenty. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have availability even in peak summer, so flexing your dates by a day or two opens up the best campsites.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234060What are the driving conditions like around Shiprock?
Driving an RV rental in New Mexico's northwest corner is refreshingly straightforward. US-491 (the main north-south highway) and US-64 are well-paved two-lane roads with wide shoulders and very little traffic outside of Farmington. Watch for three local quirks: sudden afternoon monsoon downpours from July to September that can make dirt roads (like the access to Chaco) impassable, livestock crossings on open-range stretches of the Navajo Nation, and strong crosswinds on exposed mesas. Elevations stay around 4,900 to 6,700 feet, so engines run fine but allow extra braking distance on descents. Pro tip: always check NMRoads.com the morning of any drive on unpaved routes.
nmroads.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Shiprock?
You'll find a great mix. Pine Main and Cottonwood at Navajo Lake State Park offer 30/50-amp electric, water, dump stations, flush toilets, hot showers, and a marina, with six full-hookup sites at Pine Main. Sundowner Mobile and RV Park and Moore's RV Park in Farmington are full-hookup with WiFi and laundry. Gallo Campground at Chaco is more primitive: vault toilets and no hookups, but stargazing is world-class (it's an International Dark Sky Park). For dumping and fresh water between stops, Farmington has several public stations along US-64. Pro tip: top off fresh water in Farmington before heading to Chaco or Bisti, neither has potable water on-site.
nps.gov/chcu/planyourvisit/campground.htmWhat's included inside a typical Shiprock RV rental?
You're getting a fully equipped home on wheels. Most RVs on RVezy in the Shiprock area come stocked with a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette and sofa beds (sleeping 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and a propane water heater. Many rigs add a generator, outdoor speakers, awning, TV, and even Starlink or hotspot WiFi, which is a real plus given spotty cell coverage on the Navajo Nation. Every seat used while driving has a seatbelt. Pro tip: filter by 'Sleeps' count and amenities like generator and WiFi to match your exact family RV trip Shiprock needs.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options are available?
Hosts in the Shiprock and Farmington area offer some genuinely useful add-ons: camp chairs and tables, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, bike racks, generators with included hours, propane refills, and pet packages. Pickup is usually at the host's address in Farmington, Kirtland, or Aztec, with delivery available to local campgrounds, Navajo Lake, or even further afield for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary: many rentals include 100 to 150 miles per night, and some advertise unlimited miles for a small premium. Pro tip: use the Instant Book filter to see RVs you can reserve right now, and bundle bedding plus a camp kit if you're flying in light from Albuquerque or Durango.
transportation.gov/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card at booking, and the funds are held until your trip starts, so you and the host are both protected. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized separately from your booking payment a few days before pickup and released within a week of return, assuming no damage or extra cleaning is needed. There's no cash exchanged with the host. To avoid issues, take timestamped photos of the RV exterior, interior, and odometer at pickup and dropoff. Leave the rig with a full fuel tank and empty waste tanks to ensure your deposit comes back fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksDo I need a special permit to camp on the Navajo Nation near Shiprock?
Heads up and good news: yes, but it's easy. The town of Shiprock sits on the Navajo Nation, and camping on tribal land (outside of established commercial RV parks) requires a backcountry camping permit from the Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation Department, available online for a modest fee. State and federal sites like Navajo Lake State Park, Chaco Culture, and Mesa Verde do not require this permit. If you're sticking to developed campgrounds with your motorhome rental Shiprock, you're all set with just your campground reservation. Pro tip: a tribal permit also unlocks incredible spots like Tsé Bitʼaʼí (Shiprock Pinnacle) viewpoints, just remember climbing the rock itself is not allowed out of respect for Diné cultural traditions.
