Campgrounds near West Hammond, New Mexico
West Hammond sits in San Juan County in northwest New Mexico, just outside Bloomfield and within short driving distance of Farmington, Aztec, and the wider Four Corners region. The area is high desert on the Colorado Plateau, with the San Juan River corridor providing shaded riverfront RV parks and BLM public land offering more primitive high-mesa camping.
RV travelers have a mix of options within a short drive. Angel Peak Scenic Area offers more than 10,000 acres of rugged terrain, and the nearly 7,000-foot Angel Peak is visible for miles in any direction and is surrounded by the Kutz Canyon badlands. Angel Peak RV Park, Moore's RV Park and Campground, Florez Riverview RV Park and Campground, Florez Riverview Campground, and Bluffview RV Park round out the closest options, ranging from full-hookup private parks to more basic riverside sites.
Most travelers use West Hammond as a base for exploring Chaco Culture National Historical Park, Aztec Ruins National Monument, and the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness, all reachable as day trips.
Things to do near West Hammond
The San Juan River runs through the area and is nationally known for trout fishing on its Quality Waters section below Navajo Dam. Boating, kayaking, and swimming are popular at Navajo Lake State Park, a short drive northeast.
Archaeology and geology dominate the day-trip list. Aztec Ruins National Monument preserves ancestral Puebloan great houses within Aztec city limits, while Chaco Culture National Historical Park lies south via US 550 and a long stretch of unpaved road. At Angel Peak, the canyon rim road passes overlooks of banded badlands and the sculpted fingers of Kutz Canyon, and remnants of mammal fossils and petrified wood can be found eroding out of the sandstone, siltstone, and mudstone visible in the canyon.
Hiking, photography, and stargazing are strong in the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness south of Farmington.

West Hammond has a high-desert climate with four distinct seasons. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days, cool nights, and generally dry conditions. Wildflowers and cottonwood color along the San Juan River are seasonal highlights.
Summer brings hot afternoons and the North American Monsoon, typically active from early July through mid-September. Brief but intense thunderstorms can produce flash flooding and can turn unpaved access roads slick. The gravel road to Angel Peak may become impassable in bad weather. Travelers on backcountry roads to Chaco and Bisti should check conditions before setting out.
Winter is cold, with regular snowfall and overnight lows well below freezing. Angel Peak is a primitive campground with no hookups, though there are toilets, picnic tables, and fire grates, so cold-weather visitors must be self-contained. Many private RV parks along the river stay open year-round, but water hookups may be winterized during cold snaps.
How to book campgrounds near West Hammond
Private RV parks in the area, including Angel Peak RV Park, Moore's RV Park and Campground, Florez Riverview RV Park and Campground, Florez Riverview Campground, and Bluffview RV Park, generally take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Booking a week or more ahead is recommended in peak travel months, especially for pull-through and full-hookup sites.
Public-land camping in the area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management through its Farmington Field Office. Angel Peak Campground has nine sites available for tent camping, and camping is first-come, first-served with no reservations and no permits. Navajo Lake State Park campgrounds accept reservations through the New Mexico State Parks reservation system.
What to expect
Expect high-desert conditions. Elevations sit above 5,000 feet, so sun exposure is intense, humidity is low, and overnight temperature drops are significant even in summer. Carry extra drinking water and sun protection.
Hookups vary widely. Private parks along the San Juan River corridor typically offer power, water, and sewer. Angel Peak is primitive with no hookups, and for supplies the town of Bloomfield is close by while Farmington sits about 30 miles to the west.
Cell service is reliable in Bloomfield, Aztec, and Farmington but drops quickly on backcountry roads toward Chaco and Bisti. Take plenty of water and watch for rattlesnakes. Fire restrictions are common in late spring and summer, so check current rules before arrival.
