Campgrounds and RV parks near Altona, NY

Altona sits in Clinton County in the far northeastern corner of New York, close to the Canadian border and roughly a half-hour drive west of Plattsburgh and Lake Champlain. Flat Rock State Forest, a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation property, is located in Altona and is home to a Sandstone Pavement Barrens. That combination of public forest land and nearby lake shoreline shapes what RV travelers find here. The area works well as a base for exploring the northern Adirondacks, the Lake Champlain shoreline, and cross-border trips into Quebec. Campground options range from small family-run parks close to town to larger resort-style properties with full hookups. Named options in the immediate area include Camping Canne De Bois, Twin Ells RV Park, Blue Haven Campground and Resort, Domaine Frontiere Enchantee, and Camping Coolbreeze. Most private parks in the region cater to RVs of varied sizes and offer a mix of seasonal and short-stay sites, while nearby state land is oriented toward primitive and backcountry use rather than developed RV camping.

State-run campgrounds and private parks use different reservation systems. For New York state facilities, all reservations must be made using the ReserveAmerica system, either online or by phone at 1-800-456-CAMP (1-800-456-2267). New York campgrounds are managed by two agencies, OPRHP for state parks and DEC for the Adirondack and Catskill forest preserve, and both book through the same ReserveAmerica portal. Reservations open up to 9 months in advance. Release times are 8:00 AM ET on weekdays and 9:00 AM ET on weekends from March 15 through Labor Day. Private parks such as Camping Canne De Bois, Twin Ells RV Park, Blue Haven Campground and Resort, Domaine Frontiere Enchantee, and Camping Coolbreeze take bookings directly through their own websites or by phone.
