Campgrounds and RV parks near Avon, NY

Water activities dominate the summer scene on Conesus Lake, including boating, fishing, and swimming. Conesus Lake Campground and nearby private parks provide a practical family base for exploring the lake. Letchworth State Park, often called the Grand Canyon of the East, offers three major waterfalls and cliffs as high as 600 feet, plus hiking trails, guided whitewater rafting on the Genesee River, horseback riding, and a swimming pool with a projected opening from late June through Labor Day. Day trips from Avon also reach Finger Lakes wine trails, Geneseo's SUNY campus and historic Main Street, and the shops and museums of downtown Rochester. Closer to town, Vitale Park on the north end of Conesus Lake is a popular picnic and sunset spot.

The camping season in this part of western New York is short and clearly defined. Most private campgrounds around Conesus Lake operate from mid-May through mid-October, and Letchworth's tent and trailer loops (100 through 800) typically run from mid-May through mid-October. Within that window, some loops open later or close earlier. Summer is peak season. July and August bring the warmest weather, the busiest lake, and the tightest campsite availability, particularly on weekends and around Independence Day and Labor Day. Reservations for holiday weekends should be secured well in advance. Late September and early October are prime time for foliage in the Genesee gorge and around the Finger Lakes, and these weekends book out quickly at Letchworth. Spring shoulder season is quieter but cool and wet, and lake water temperatures stay chilly through May. Winter camping is limited: private lake campgrounds close and Letchworth's tent and trailer loops shut down, though the park itself stays open for day use, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

Terrain around Avon is rolling farmland transitioning to lake hills and river gorge to the south. Roads are paved and generally easy for RV travel, though approaches to some Conesus Lake sites include steep grades. Interstate 390 provides direct access from Rochester and points south. At Letchworth, all sites have space for one tent and one trailer or two tents and two cars, with a picnic table and wood-burning pit; RVs and trailers back into on-site pads, water spigots are within 125 feet, restrooms with hot showers are in each loop, and a sanitary dump station is available. Private campgrounds in the area lean family-oriented, with pools, playgrounds, camp stores, and organized weekend activities. Cell service is reliable near Avon but can drop off in Letchworth's gorge loops. Bring layers regardless of season, insect repellent for summer evenings, and plan to source firewood locally to prevent the spread of invasive pests.
