Campgrounds and RV parks near Calcium, NY

The St. Lawrence River drives most activity. Boating, swimming, and smallmouth bass, northern pike, and walleye fishing are the headline draws, and a New York State fishing license is required in state waters. Boat tours from Clayton and Alexandria Bay run to Boldt Castle on Heart Island and Singer Castle on Dark Island during the warm season. On land, families visit the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site, and the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park in Watertown. The Thousand Islands International Bridge provides a direct crossing into Ontario, Canada, for day trips (passports required). Campers based at Grass Point State Park can walk to a sandy beach with lifeguards, a playground, and a boat launch. Nearby state parks including Wellesley Island, Cedar Point, Burnham Point, Keewaydin, and DeWolf Point round out the public-land options.

The camping season in this region is short. Most campgrounds operate from mid-May through mid-October, with Columbus Day weekend a common closing date. Grass Point State Park's published camping and cabin season runs from mid-May through mid-September, and other state park campgrounds nearby follow a similar window. Summer is peak season. July and August bring warm days, active river traffic, and the highest booking pressure; waterfront sites at state parks and popular private resorts fill months ahead for weekends. Late spring and early fall are quieter, with cooler nights, fewer bugs, and strong fishing. Fall foliage in the Adirondack foothills to the east typically peaks from late September into mid-October. Winter closes most campgrounds. Lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario is heavy in this corridor, and Watertown averages roughly 100 inches of snow per year. RV travelers should plan trips inside the May-to-October window unless specifically prepared for cold-weather operation.

Terrain around Calcium is flat to gently rolling, with easy RV access on Interstate 81 and state routes. Grass Point State Park has 20 electric sites at 20-amp service, no water or sewer hookups on individual sites, a dump station, and shower facilities. Larger rigs should confirm site dimensions before booking, since older state park loops can be tight. Private parks in the area generally offer full hookups, and several sit directly on the water with docks and boat launches. Cell service is reliable near Watertown and thins in the more rural stretches toward the river and the Adirondack foothills. Two local notes: Fort Drum is an active Army installation, and distant munitions practice is sometimes audible from campgrounds in the area. Firewood must come from within 50 miles of the campground under New York's firewood rule, or be certified heat-treated.
