Campgrounds near Caroga Lake
Caroga Lake sits just inside the southern boundary of Adirondack Park in Fulton County, New York, northwest of Gloversville. The hamlet is built around East and West Caroga Lakes, and campgrounds in the area serve as a base for boating, fishing, and hiking in the Ferris Lake and Shaker Mountain Wild Forests.
RV travelers have a mix of private and state-run options within a short drive. Pecks Lake Enterprises, Pine Lake Campground and RV Park, and Southern Adirondack Pines Campground and Cabins offer private sites close to the lakes. Royal Mountain Campground sits near the ski area of the same name, and Crystal Grove Diamond Mine and Campground pairs traditional sites with on-site mineral collecting.
Elevations in the southern Adirondacks generally run between roughly 1,500 and 2,000 feet, which keeps summer nights cool even when afternoons reach the 80s. Cell service and grocery options thin out once past Gloversville, so most travelers stock up before heading north on NY-29A or NY-10.
Things to do around Caroga Lake
The two Caroga Lakes anchor most trips. Both support swimming, fishing, kayaking, and small-boat use, and several campgrounds offer direct water access or rentals. The state campground on East Caroga Lake has a sand beach, boat launch, and canoe and kayak rentals, and it serves as the main public swim spot in the hamlet.
Hiking is the other draw. The Kane Mountain fire tower is the most popular short hike from the Caroga area, with additional trails to Nine Corner Lake and other ponds in the surrounding Wild Forest units. Crystal Grove Diamond Mine and Campground lets guests dig for Herkimer diamonds on site, which works well for families with kids. Royal Mountain operates as a ski area in winter and hosts warm-weather activities including disc golf.

Most developed campgrounds in the Caroga Lake area operate on a seasonal schedule. The state-run DEC campground on East Caroga Lake opens May 15 and closes shortly after Labor Day, typically in early September. Private options such as Pine Lake Campground and RV Park, Royal Mountain Campground, and Crystal Grove Diamond Mine and Campground generally run from mid-spring into early or mid-October, with dates varying by operator.
July and August are the busiest weeks, with warm lake temperatures, full programming at private parks, and the highest demand for waterfront sites. June brings quieter weekdays but also blackfly and mosquito activity typical of the southern Adirondacks. Early fall is a strong shoulder window: cooler nights, fewer bugs, and hardwood color from late September into mid-October.
Winter closes almost all campgrounds. Snow accumulation is heavy in this part of the Adirondacks, side roads narrow quickly, and RV access to most private sites is not maintained until spring thaw.

How to book a campground near Caroga Lake
The state campground on East Caroga Lake is managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and booked through ReserveAmerica or the call center at 1-800-456-2267. Reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, and same-day online bookings are accepted until 5 p.m. on the day of arrival. Walk-ins are not permitted, so an advance booking is required even for last-minute trips.
Private campgrounds handle their own reservations directly. Pecks Lake Enterprises, Pine Lake Campground and RV Park, Southern Adirondack Pines Campground and Cabins, Royal Mountain Campground, and Crystal Grove Diamond Mine and Campground each take bookings by phone or through their websites. For summer weekends and holidays, waterfront and full-hookup sites should be reserved several months ahead.
What to expect at Caroga Lake campgrounds
Sites in this area range from open RV pads with hookups at private parks to more wooded, low-service sites at the state campground. The DEC campground offers large, level sites that can accommodate rigs up to about 40 feet and includes hot showers, potable water, a trailer dump station, a recycling center, a bathhouse, and a guarded swim beach.
Expect a rural, forested setting with limited light pollution and fair to poor cell coverage depending on carrier. Pets are allowed at DEC campgrounds and at most private parks with proof of a current rabies vaccination, on a leash no longer than six feet. Firewood should be purchased locally: New York restricts moving untreated firewood more than 50 miles from its source to slow the spread of invasive pests.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Caroga Lake, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Caroga Lake, NY?
RV rental in Caroga Lake is surprisingly affordable compared to the big Adirondack hubs like Lake Placid or Lake George. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $140 per night, Class C motorhomes around $175 to $250 per night, and luxury Class A coaches at the higher end. Booking midweek or during the shoulder seasons of late May or early September can shave 20 to 30 percent off peak July and August rates. Pro tip: filter by Delivery and have the host drop the RV right at your Caroga Lake Campground site on State Highway 29A. You'll save fuel, skip the learning curve, and start your trip relaxed on the beach.
dec.ny.gov/places/caroga-lake-campground-and-day-use-areaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Caroga Lake?
Good news: a regular New York State driver's license (or your home state or province license) is all you need to rent an RV in Caroga Lake. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required for any motorhome or travel trailer you'll find on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older, and ID confirmation happens easily through the RVezy platform during booking. Visiting from outside North America? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club before you fly in. Most first-time renters are surprised at how straightforward the process is, you can be approved and booked in a single afternoon.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/driver-licensesWhat protection is included with my Caroga Lake RV rental?
Every RV rental in Caroga Lake booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head into the Adirondacks with real peace of mind. You choose the coverage level that fits your trip during checkout (the cancellation policy and protection options are set by RVezy, not the individual host). If you get a flat on Route 29A or need a tow off a back road near Ferris Lake Wild Forest, one phone call gets a qualified professional dispatched to your location. It is substantial financial protection designed specifically for peer-to-peer RV rentals on the RVezy platform.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Caroga Lake RV trip?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, and you can get a full refund if you cancel within 24 hours of the host accepting your booking. After that grace period, refunds depend on how far out from your trip start date you cancel: cancel more than 30 days out and you forfeit only the RVezy service fee and its tax; cancel between 30 and 8 days out and you forfeit 50% of the rental amount plus the service fee; cancellations within 7 days forfeit the full rental amount. A separate natural disasters policy may apply if your Caroga Lake trip is directly impacted. You will see the exact terms before you confirm payment, and RVezy support is available seven days a week if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Caroga Lake RV trip?
Absolutely, the Adirondacks were practically made for dogs, and a pet-friendly RV rental in Caroga Lake is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who welcome four-legged guests. Once you arrive, Caroga Lake Campground allows dogs on a leash no longer than six feet with proof of a current rabies vaccination, but pets are not allowed on the beach, in facility structures, or in day use areas, and cannot be left unattended. The Kane Mountain Fire Tower trail (off Green Lake Road) and nearby Ferris Lake Wild Forest trails are dog-friendly and offer some of the best leashed hiking in Fulton County. Pro tip: pack a towel, the lakes are irresistible and your pup will be soaked by sundown.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/caroga-lake-campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NY&parkId=627Can the RV be delivered directly to my Caroga Lake campsite?
Yes, and it's one of the smartest moves you can make. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Caroga Lake, meaning they'll tow or drive the RV straight to Caroga Lake Campground, Pine Lake Campground, or even a private lakehouse driveway, level it, hook up the utilities, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter for Delivery on the search page to see hosts offering this service. It's the perfect choice for a first time renting an RV, since you skip highway driving entirely. Delivery fees usually run $2 to $5 per mile from the host's location, and many hosts offer flat-rate packages to popular spots along Route 29A.
dec.ny.gov/places/caroga-lake-campground-and-day-use-areaHow far can I drive on a Caroga Lake RV rental?
You've got plenty of range for a great Caroga Lake RV trip. Many hosts on RVezy offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, and you'll find listings advertising RV rental with unlimited mileage if you plan to roam. From Caroga Lake, popular day trips include Saratoga Springs (50 miles east), the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown (45 miles southwest), Lake George Village (55 miles northeast), and Howe Caverns (60 miles south). Extra miles typically cost $0.30 to $0.45 each, but unlimited-mileage hosts let you stop worrying about the odometer. Message the host before booking to confirm the policy, especially if you're planning a wider RV road trip from Caroga Lake.
dot.ny.gov/regional-offices/region2Where should I stay when RV camping in Caroga Lake?
You are spoiled for choice. The flagship spot is Caroga Lake Campground on State Highway 29A, a New York State DEC campground on East Caroga Lake with around 161 large, level sites that accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, plus a sandy beach, bathhouse, hot showers, a boat launch, and a trailer dump station (note: these are non-electric sites). Pine Lake Campground & RV Park sits just minutes north and offers full-hookup sites on wooded acreage. Royal Mountain Campsites is a seasonal favorite from spring through early fall. For something more rustic, DevilDoc Campsites delivers private sites and excellent Adirondack stargazing. Crystal Grove Diamond Mine & Campground in nearby St. Johnsville even lets you dig for Herkimer diamonds between trips to the bathhouse.
dec.ny.gov/places/caroga-lake-campground-and-day-use-areaWhen is the best time to visit Caroga Lake in an RV?
Late June through early September is prime time for RV camping in Caroga Lake, with daytime highs in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit and warm lake water perfect for swimming. Caroga Lake Campground opens in mid-May and closes around Columbus Day, so plan within that window if you want a state-park site. September brings cooler nights (40s to 60s), fewer bugs, and the start of legendary Adirondack fall foliage, easily the insider's pick. October's leaves peak around the second week. Winter is a different adventure entirely: ice fishing, snowmobiling on local trails, and skiing at Royal Mountain just up the road, though most campgrounds close, so target an RV with a winterized package and private driveway hookups.
weather.gov/aly/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Caroga Lake?
You're going to be more than okay, you're going to love it. First time renting an RV, in this corner of the Adirondacks, is honestly easier than most destinations because the roads around Caroga Lake (Route 29A, Route 10, Route 30) are wide, scenic, and not heavily trafficked. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the kitchen, bathroom, slide-outs, propane, generator, and waste tanks. You can also message your host any time during the trip if a question pops up, and 24/7 roadside assistance is just a call away. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or small travel trailer for your first rental, they drive like a large van.
dmv.ny.gov/about-dmv/drivers-manualWhat if I break down or need help during my trip?
Help is always close by. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 10, a dead battery at Pine Lake, or a stubborn slide-out at Caroga Lake Campground gets handled with one phone call. A dispatcher arranges a qualified technician or tow to your exact location. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for questions about quirks of their specific RV. Cell service can be spotty in pockets of Ferris Lake Wild Forest, so screenshot the roadside number before heading into the backcountry. Most issues get resolved the same day, and you are rarely more than 15 minutes from Gloversville or Johnstown for parts and services.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Caroga Lake?
An RV road trip from Caroga Lake puts the entire Northeast at your fingertips. Top picks include: Lake George and Bolton Landing (55 miles, about 90 minutes), Saratoga Springs for racing and mineral spas (50 miles), Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame (45 miles), Lake Placid and the High Peaks (115 miles, around 2.5 hours), and the Thousand Islands region (170 miles). Heading further? Niagara Falls is 250 miles west via the New York State Thruway. Cross-border trips into Canada are allowed by many hosts but require advance approval, so message the host first. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance coverage limits.
dot.ny.gov/indexHow much should I budget for fuel on a Caroga Lake RV trip?
Fuel budgeting is straightforward once you know your rig. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 10 to 14 MPG, and Class A coaches 7 to 10 MPG. Truck-and-travel-trailer combos land around 10 to 13 MPG. Gas prices in Fulton County typically run a few cents below the New York State average, with the closest stations in Caroga Lake village, Gloversville (10 miles south), and Johnstown. For a typical 4-night Adirondack loop covering 250 miles in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Gloversville before heading north on Route 10, stations get sparse once you enter the deeper Adirondack interior.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Caroga Lake?
Book early, especially for summer weekends. Caroga Lake Campground accepts reservations up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and the lakeside loops at this DEC park sell out fast for July 4th, the Fungus Festival weekend, and Labor Day. Aim to book by February or March for peak summer dates. Pine Lake Campground takes reservations directly by phone, and seasonal sites there fill quickly. For shoulder-season trips (late May, September, early October), you can often grab a site two to four weeks out. Pro tip: if your dream date shows sold-out, set up a cancellation alert, last-minute openings happen constantly as plans shift.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/caroga-lake-campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NY&parkId=627What are driving conditions like around Caroga Lake?
Driving an RV around Caroga Lake is genuinely pleasant. State Routes 29A, 10, and 30 are well-maintained two-lane roads with gentle curves, modest grades, and beautiful Adirondack scenery, no white-knuckle mountain passes here. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk year-round, and slow down for occasional black bears crossing in spring. Summer brings sudden afternoon thunderstorms; pull over and wait them out. Winter conditions can include lake-effect snow and icy patches, so most RV trips run May through October. Avoid trying to navigate the narrow lakefront camp roads with a Class A over 35 feet, stick to the main loops at Caroga Lake Campground or have your host deliver.
511ny.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Caroga Lake?
Local campgrounds cover the essentials and then some. Caroga Lake Campground offers a trailer dump station, recycling center, hot showers, flush toilets, a sand beach with summer lifeguards (mid-June through Labor Day), a boat launch, and an 18-station exercise course, but these are non-electric sites, so you will rely on your RV's house batteries, propane, or onboard generator. Pine Lake Campground & RV Park provides full hookups (electric, water, sewer), a camp store, laundry, and hot showers. For potable water fills and dump access between trips, Caroga Lake Campground's dump station is open to registered campers. Pro tip: bring a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter just in case your site's pedestal doesn't match your RV.
dec.ny.gov/places/caroga-lake-campground-and-day-use-areaWhat's typically inside an RV rental in Caroga Lake?
You'll be impressed by what comes standard. A motorhome rental in Caroga Lake usually includes a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stovetop, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping for 4 to 8 people, climate control via roof AC and propane furnace, dinette and sofa seating with seatbelts for travel, and a TV. Many listings include an onboard generator for boondocking nights, outdoor speakers, a power awning, and starter kits with linens, kitchenware, and outdoor chairs. Wifi varies, cell signal at Caroga Lake Campground is decent on major carriers but spotty deeper in Ferris Lake Wild Forest, so consider a host with a mobile hotspot add-on if you need to stay connected.
dec.ny.gov/places/caroga-lake-campground-and-day-use-areaWhat popular add-ons and pickup options do Caroga Lake hosts offer?
Hosts get creative with add-ons that level up your trip. Common options include kayak and SUP rentals, bike racks and bikes, kid-friendly bundles (high chairs, pack-and-plays), fishing gear, generator use packages, propane refills, linen and towel sets, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Gloversville, Johnstown, Mayfield, or right in Caroga Lake, and most hosts offer delivery to Caroga Lake Campground, Pine Lake, or a private lakehouse for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary from 100 free miles per night to unlimited, so message the host to confirm. Pro tip: ask about a kayak add-on, the Caroga Lakes and nearby Canada Lake are made for paddling.
dec.ny.gov/places/caroga-lake-campground-and-day-use-areaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform: you pay at booking (never directly to the host in cash), and most major credit cards are accepted. A refundable security deposit is placed on your card before your trip; the exact amount is set by the host and shown clearly on the listing, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV. As long as you return the RV in the condition you received it, with tanks handled per the host's instructions, the deposit is released back to you after the trip. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, review the walkthrough checklist with your host, and refill the fuel and propane as agreed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle cold weather if I'm renting an RV in Caroga Lake during shoulder season?
Shoulder-season RV camping in Caroga Lake is one of the region's best-kept secrets, and the right rig makes it cozy. Look for RVezy listings that mention heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, a working propane furnace, and a winterization package, perfect for late September through October when overnight lows can dip into the 30s. Pine Lake Campground stays open later than the state campground and offers full electric hookups so you can run your furnace and an electric space heater simultaneously. Pack base layers, a four-season sleeping bag as backup, and an extra propane tank. Pro tip: book a site facing east, morning sun warms the RV fast and the fall colors over East Caroga Lake at sunrise are unforgettable.
