Camping near Champlain, New York
Champlain sits at the top of New York's Lake Champlain shoreline, roughly a mile from the Quebec border and a short drive from Plattsburgh, Rouses Point, and the ferry crossings to Vermont. Plattsburgh is the largest city on the New York side of the lake, and RV parks and campgrounds dot the shoreline in both directions. The location works well as a basecamp for lake days, Adirondack day trips, and cross-border travel to Montreal.
Campgrounds within easy reach of Champlain include Camping Gregoire Plage, Camping Coolbreeze, Camping Du Lac Cristal, Montys Bay Camp Site, and Sunset Rock Rv Park & Lake Shore. Most operate seasonally and cater to RV travelers with water and electric hookups, along with tent sites and some cabin options.
Lake Champlain stretches across New York, Vermont, and Quebec, backed by the Green Mountains to the east and the Adirondacks to the west. That geography drives the trip planning: water access on one side, mountains on the other, and the Canadian border only minutes away.
Things to do near Champlain
The lake dominates the itinerary. Boating, fishing, and swimming are the core summer activities, while the surrounding Champlain Valley offers hiking and biking trails, day-use beaches, and golf courses. Bass fishing is a regional draw, and paddlers use the sheltered bays near Rouses Point and Kings Bay.
West of the lake, the Adirondack Park opens up big terrain, with High Peaks hiking, paddling rivers, and some of the strongest fall foliage in the Northeast. Ausable Chasm, Lake Placid, and the Cumberland Bay beaches are all within a reasonable day-trip radius, and the ferry at Cumberland Head connects to Burlington, Vermont for a cross-lake day out.

The camping window is tight. Most campgrounds in the region operate from mid-May through mid-October. Cumberland Bay State Park, the closest state campground, runs its main loops from mid-May to mid-October, with one loop closing after Labor Day. Private RV parks near Champlain follow similar patterns, typically opening in May and closing by mid to late October.
Summer is peak. July and August bring warm days, the busiest lake traffic, and the tightest campsite availability, so weekends fill early. Late June and early September offer a good balance of warm water and lighter crowds. Fall foliage runs from late September through mid-October and is one of the strongest reasons to book a shoulder-season trip.
Winter snow and ice make most campgrounds inaccessible from November through April, and shoreline roads can drift closed during storms. Anyone considering a late-season trip should confirm gate closure dates directly with the campground before arrival.
How to book a campground near Champlain
Public campgrounds on the New York side of the lake are booked through the ReserveAmerica system, which handles both New York State Parks and DEC campgrounds. Reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance of the arrival date, and popular waterfront sites at parks like Cumberland Bay disappear quickly once that window opens. State Parks manages developed campgrounds with more amenities, while DEC manages the more rustic campgrounds in the Adirondack and Catskill Forest Preserve.
For private campgrounds near Champlain, book directly with the operator by phone or website. Summer weekends and foliage weekends sell out first, so lock in dates as soon as travel plans firm up. Same-day reservations at State Park campgrounds are accepted online until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival.
What to expect on the ground
Sites around Champlain skew rustic to mid-amenity. Expect gravel or grass pads, water and 30-amp electric at most RV sites, some 50-amp pull-throughs at the larger parks, and dump stations rather than full sewer hookups at many locations. Waterfront sites carry a premium and book earliest.
State park sites in the area are large and grassy, and lean-tos are available at some nearby parks for a step up from tent camping. Cell service is generally solid along the I-87 corridor and thinner in the Adirondack interior. Bring bug repellent for early summer and layers for cool lake evenings, even in July.
Firewood transport into New York is restricted to protect forests from invasive pests, so plan to buy wood on site or from a nearby vendor rather than hauling it in from home.
