Campgrounds and RV parks near Chaumont, NY

Water activities dominate. Chaumont Bay holds walleye, bass, yellow perch, northern pike, and other warm-water species, and the protected harbor makes it a strong base for boating, fishing, and paddling. Water access is available from docks and boat launches for kayaking, canoeing, and boating on Lake Ontario. Onshore, the nature trails at the Chaumont Barrens Preserve add a short outing families can pair with a beach day. Day trips reach Tibbetts Point Lighthouse at Cape Vincent, where Lake Ontario meets the St. Lawrence River, and Sackets Harbor Battlefield, a strategic site during the War of 1812. Clayton adds the Antique Boat Museum and river cruises through the Thousand Islands. Birdwatchers can look for herons, terns, loons, and waterfowl along the shoreline.

The camping season is short and defined by the state park calendar. Thousand Islands - Long Point State Park typically runs from mid-May through Labor Day weekend, and Cedar Point State Park runs from early May into mid-October. Private parks around Chaumont typically open in spring and close in October. Winter camping is not available at the state parks, though ice fishing and snowmobiling remain popular local pastimes. Summer is peak season. July and August bring the warmest water, the busiest boat launches, and the tightest reservations. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill first. Cape Vincent's French Festival in mid-July and other regional events pull additional traffic into the corridor. Shoulder seasons offer quieter sites. Late May and early June bring cool nights and strong fishing. September delivers warm days, fewer bugs, and easier availability, though lake winds pick up and storms off Lake Ontario can develop quickly. A 50-mile firewood radius applies at state parks, so buy locally.

State park sites in this area are functional rather than luxurious. Thousand Islands - Long Point State Park offers grassy, mostly open waterfront sites with a playground, picnic areas, a laundromat in Bathhouse 2, a boat launch, and dockage during the camping season. Cedar Point State Park offers a sheltered sandy beach, boat rentals and dockage, campsites with a mix of full, electric, and non-hookup options, a marina with a pump-out station, picnic tables and pavilions, a playground, playing fields, and showers. Expect variable cell service, especially on the peninsulas, and weather that can shift quickly with storms off Lake Ontario. Constant lake breezes keep the shoreline parks cool and largely mosquito-free. Pets are welcome at state park sites with a maximum of two per site, current rabies proof required at check-in, and a leash no longer than six feet.
