Campgrounds near Evans Mills, New York
Evans Mills sits in Jefferson County, minutes from Fort Drum and roughly a half-hour drive from the St. Lawrence River and the Thousand Islands region. Most RV travelers use the village as a staging point before heading north on Route 12 toward Alexandria Bay, Clayton, and the string of state-park campgrounds that line the American Channel.
Options range from resort-style RV parks to compact state-park loops. Swan Bay Resort and Marina in Alexandria Bay is a large full-hookup resort on the river, while Keewaydin State Park sits west of Alexandria Bay on the St. Lawrence River with 48 campsites overlooking the water. Grass Point State Park occupies a point projecting into the American Channel and offers 77 sites for tent and RV campers, 72 of which are reservable. 1000 Islands Campground and Sportsmans Hideaway RV Park round out the choices with private-park amenities closer to the water.
Most sites are seasonal, with the majority of state parks in the region operating from mid-May through mid-September.
Things to do near Evans Mills
The St. Lawrence River drives most activity in the area. The American Channel is known for some of the best fishing in the country, and shore access, boat launches, and marina slips are common at the riverside parks. Bass, pike, walleye, and panfish are among the common targets, and bald eagles, ospreys, and loons are frequently seen along the shoreline.
Boat tours from Alexandria Bay and Clayton run to Boldt Castle, Singer Castle, and the Rock Island Lighthouse. Families often combine a state-park stay with the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton and the beach at Grass Point.
Keewaydin State Park has short hiking trails, including the half-mile Port and Port Loop trails, the one-mile Ships Bow Trail, and the 1.25-mile Starboard Trail, providing walks suitable for kids. The park also has an Olympic-sized swimming pool open in summer.

The camping season in the Thousand Islands is short and concentrated. The camping and cabin season at Grass Point State Park runs May 15 through September 19, and most nearby New York state-park campgrounds follow a similar mid-May to mid-September window. Swan Bay Resort operates April 1 through November 30, giving shoulder-season travelers a longer runway.
Summer is peak. Grass Point's peak season runs from the end of June to the end of August, and July and August fill weekends and holiday periods first, especially waterfront sites. Reservations are recommended for the 14 waterfront sites at Grass Point. Spring brings cool temperatures, rising water levels, and biting insects near the river; fall delivers foliage but shorter days and colder nights.
Winter closes the state-park campgrounds. Keewaydin remains open for day use, offering ice fishing and cross-country skiing when conditions allow, but RV camping is not available in the region during that period.
How to book
New York state parks use a single reservation system. Reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Campsite reservations can be made for the same day and up to nine months in advance. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival for campsites.
One-night stays can be booked online or through the call center if the reservation is made within three days of arrival. Existing reservation holders can pre-register on Reserve America starting two days prior to arrival.
Private parks such as Swan Bay Resort and Marina, 1000 Islands Campground, and Sportsmans Hideaway RV Park take reservations directly through their own booking systems, with waterfront sites at Swan Bay typically the first to sell out.
What to expect on site
State-park loops in the region are modest in scale. Grass Point has 20 electric sites, each offering 20-amp service, plus non-electric sites and a cottage rental. There are no water or sewer hookups on individual sites, but a dump station and drinking-water fillup are available. Bathhouses, showers, playgrounds, and boat launches are standard. Keewaydin has no hookups, and each site accommodates RVs up to 40 feet.
Private resorts offer more infrastructure. Swan Bay Resort features 300 plus full-hookup RV sites with oversized concrete pads, 20-, 30-, and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer, plus two heated pools, a marina, and a Tiki Bar.
Pets are welcome in most campgrounds under standard rules. A maximum of two pets per site is permitted, and pets must be on a leash no longer than six feet and under control at all times. Proof of rabies inoculation is required. Bring bug spray: black flies and mosquitoes are common near the water in early summer.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Evans%20Mills%2C%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near Evans Mills?
You have great options for RV camping in Evans Mills. Top picks include Wellesley Island State Park (about 30 minutes north, with full hookups and St. Lawrence River views), Keewaydin State Park in Alexandria Bay (great for Thousand Islands boat tours), Westcott Beach State Park on Lake Ontario near Sackets Harbor, Black Lake area campgrounds (legendary for bass fishing), and Kring Point State Park for quieter waterfront sites. Most New York State Parks campgrounds open mid-May through mid-October. Pro tip: book through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months in advance, especially for July weekends when these spots fill fast.
parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time to visit Evans Mills in an RV?
The sweet spot for an Evans Mills RV trip is mid-June through mid-September, when daytime highs sit comfortably in the mid-70s to low 80s Fahrenheit and the Thousand Islands region is in full swing. Late September into early October is the insider's pick: fall foliage along the St. Lawrence is stunning, campgrounds empty out, and rates drop. Winters here are harsh (Jefferson County regularly sees over 100 inches of lake-effect snow and lows in the teens), so most campgrounds close November through April. Spring is wet and muddy, so if it is your first time, aim for that July-to-October window for the easiest experience.
weather.gov/buf/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay?
You'll do great — first time renting an RV in Evans Mills is honestly one of the easier places to start. Roads around Jefferson County are wide, flat, and far less congested than downstate New York, and your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, the propane system, water, and the toilet. Most renters feel comfortable within the first 30 minutes behind the wheel. If city driving makes you nervous, just book a delivered RV so the host handles the tricky part. Pro tip: take your first short drive on Route 11 between Evans Mills and Philadelphia, NY before heading to a campground.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/drivers-manualWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You are never stranded. Every RV rental in Evans Mills booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and fuel delivery. If you have a hiccup heading up I-81 toward the Thousand Islands Bridge or out near Black Lake, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also typically a quick text away for questions about RV-specific quirks like the awning or generator. The RVezy support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Most issues are minor and resolved the same day, so you can get back to enjoying the river.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV across the border into Canada from Evans Mills?

You are just 30 minutes from the Thousand Islands Bridge crossing into Ivy Lea, Ontario, and about 90 minutes from Ottawa. Cross-border travel is allowed on many RVezy listings, but not all, so message the host directly before booking to confirm and request the proper insurance documents. You will need a valid passport, and pets need up-to-date rabies vaccination records. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: ask your host for a printed copy of the rental agreement to show at the border, it speeds things up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV rental in Evans Mills?
Fuel is one of the easier expenses to plan for on a North Country RV trip. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and large Class A coaches average 6 to 10 MPG. Gas prices in Jefferson County typically run near the New York State average, with stations in Evans Mills, Watertown, and Calcium being the most convenient fill-ups. For a typical 4-night trip with 300 miles of driving in a Class C, budget around $150 to $200 for fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Evans Mills before heading north into the Thousand Islands, where prices climb closer to the bridge.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Evans Mills?
Book early for the best Thousand Islands campgrounds. New York State Parks (including Wellesley Island, Keewaydin, Kring Point, and Westcott Beach) open reservations 9 months ahead through ReserveAmerica, and prime July and August weekends often fill within hours of opening. For a smoother experience, aim to lock in your campsite 4 to 6 months out, or be flexible with weekday arrivals. Private campgrounds around Black Lake and Henderson Harbor book through their own websites and usually have more late availability. Pro tip: if you strike out on weekends, midweek stays at Wellesley Island are easier to grab and the park is far quieter Monday through Wednesday.
parks.ny.gov/camping/reservations.aspxWhat are local driving conditions like around Evans Mills?
Driving an RV around Evans Mills is refreshingly low-stress. Route 11 and I-81 are the main arteries, both wide, well-maintained, and lightly trafficked outside of Fort Drum shift-change hours (roughly 6 to 8 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays). Watch for military convoys near the Fort Drum gates and deer at dawn and dusk — they're common throughout Jefferson County. In late fall and winter, lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario can hit hard and fast, so check NY 511 before driving November through April. Pro tip: avoid downtown Watertown's Public Square traffic circle in a big rig and take Coffeen Street or Arsenal Street instead.
